If you aren't breastfeeding then you could use Nestle Good Start Supreme formula that has a probiotic in it. My baby, who's now 3 months old, was extremely fussy because of tummy aches and terrible gas pains until I finally switched to this formula...6 formula's later! Also, the proteins are broken down so that it's easily digestible. All of a sudden I had a completely different baby...happy and able to pass gas without such a problem.

Hello,
Tried it myself in capsule form after a nasty bout of food poisoning in Costa Rica. Just couldn't shake the stomach problems after one whole month! Worked wonders!!

At this young age, I wouldn't give them to him directly unless your doc tells you specifically what kind and what dosage. I would just take some yourself and let it pass through your breastmilk.

I did start giving my kids Udo's Choice Infants Probiotic of Baby Jarro powder in their formula or drinks when they turned 3 months old. I think 1/8 of a teaspoon. Now they are 2 and 4. I make sure they get their probiotics at least 2-3 times a week, multivitamins and fatty essential oils everyday (my kids love the Yummi Bear vitamins and 3-6-9 bears). Other than a few colds here and there my kids haven't been sick. Neither has had to have any antibiotics for anything. And their BM's are regular....my 4 yo goes twice a day and my 2 yo goes 3 times a day.

The probiotics really help to keep the digestive system healthy and running smoothly. Which then in turn helps the body to better digest and absorp the nutrients we put into it. Which then affects our hormones, brain function, muscles, bones.....you see the whole circular effect going on.

So probiotics are all good...just be sure to give him the right amount or he could get diarrhea from it since it gets the digestive system going.

our ped recommended biogaia, we didn't believe it would help but I Did! We noticed him getting better but when we weren't sure if it was the probiotics we didn't continue when we ran out, well within 24 hours he was really colicky again, we ran out to get some ASAP. its really hard to find, make sure you always have an extra bottle but we swear by it. you can get it online including with amazon.com

Are you sure it is colic? Our 3 month old son has a protein intolerance but was told by a doctor he it was "just" colic. However my gut new it was something else besides colic. Finally another doctor discovered the real problem of the intolerance. And now he has special formula and is a whole new baby! You might want to make sure before you start giving something like probiotics!

I did not use them for colic, but I do use them and my son is coming up on 17 months and has had only one cold and one small bout of stomach flu. :) I highly recommend them just in general.
For colic i would recommend the little pills by Hylands, and keeping him as upright as possible while feeding. Also, I let my son sleep on his tummy, which helped push the gas out of his tummy.

Yes I used them when my daughter was about 3 months old and had a lot of stomach cramps and gas. I do not know if it was colic or not but the probiotic was great. I gave it to her at nursing time and when and it really seemed to help build the good bacteria in the stomach etc. I still use it today in her food and mixed into her juice or milk and she is now 13 months old. I even give it to my son who is 4 1/2 yrs old. It is a long term digestive building addition and you do not give them very much but it has been a GOOD thing. good luck !

Hi C.,

Probiotics are a definite must. They are very important in keeping the immune system healthy. We use the ones from Shaklee because of the safety and purity of all their products. One less thing to worry about! You can view them at www.shaklee.net/greennutrition. Hope this helps!

Hi C.,
I think probiotics are a great, however they did not help with my daughter's colic. She was extremely colicky and only thing that finally worked for her was chiropractics.
Maybe with your little one will be helped by the probiotics.
Best,

hi C.,
our pediatric GI recommended this as well, but said to make sure it is one that survives into the intestines, as I guess many types are killed off by the stomach acid. (I would guess your doctor could tell you the exact brands to try). We tried this for our son and it didn't make an appreciable difference, but a lot of people have said it did help. The specialist also warned us against supplementing with formula, as he said formula stays in the stomach a lot longer than breastmilk and usually makes colic worse.
Best of luck- stay strong.

PB8 and potassium gluconate work extremely well. Feel free to contact me for specifics. In fact, the postassium can work within 24-48 hours.

We used the Baby Jarro probiotics for our son's colic and it worked great. my husband did the research first, then mentioned it to our doctor who thought it was a great idea. we also used the hyland's tablets and mylicon depending on if it seemed like he was gassy. but, we used the probiotic powder in his bottle every day and it really helped.

If you are breastfeeding, cut dairy out of you diet. If you are giving him formula, try giving him Nutramigen or Neocate (have to order from your pharmacy). Those two are the least allergenic. Are you swaddling him? Have you tried Gripe Water and Mylicon drops? Also, read "Happiest Baby on the Block" and follow the "jello head jiggle", I think it is called. It is a way of calming your baby down and totally totally works. Sounds strange but follow exactly as he says to and you will see. Hang in there, good luck.

It depends on why your child has colic. My son is allergic to dairy and soy proteins. Once I eliminated them from my diet (I was nursing) his colic went away. If the colic is food allergy related and whatever is bothering your child is in the probiotic it could make it considerably worse.
