Anyone with a Baby Who Has Worn the Helmet to Correct a Flat Head?

We just received recommendation to put my 6 month old son in a helmet. He would only sleep on one side of his head as a newborn and it flattened. The place we went is Cranial Technologies at LBJ and Hillcrest. Does anyone have any experience with them or helmets in general? Do they work and is it worth the effort for a moderate case? They are telling me he would only be in it 2-4 months, depending on how fast his head grows.

What can I do next?

I do not personally have a child whose had to wear a helmet, but I know one who has. I believe they also went to Cranial Technologies. Their son had to wear the helmet for 6 months and it made a huge difference. I know they would recommend having it done if the dr says that's what's needed.

A friend of mine (her son) had it. It took 3 months, and it worked like a charm!

My son had plagio and wore a helmet for 4 months. We went to Cranial Tech. and loved it. Please shoot me an e-mail or call me if you want to talk about it. I know it can be scary!! But it is the best thing we have done for Kyle. :)
Blessings,

Hi J.,

We used CT and everything went great. My son really didn't have much flatness but just enough for us to notice. It was only on a few months and now you would never know. Definitely worth every penny.

Best of luck to you.

My son wore one from about 4 month to 6 months of age for moderate plagio. It was in the summer, but I took extra care to really scrub it out daily and always cool down the car with AC for a few minutes before he got into it. It never really bothered him. He even slept throught the night his first night. Our insurance didn't cover it so we had to pay out of pocket. I am glad we did it. The Cranial Tech people are very nice. I do have a friend that considered it and ended up not doing it, and he says his son's head is fine now just from time. It all depends. You just never know if time will take care if it or not. There is a really great support group on Yahoogroups. Do a search for plagiocephaly and you will find it. They have many people there who have done it and will share their experiences. They are very helpful to people trying to decide what to do. I know it's a hard decision. Feel free to message me if you have any questions or need to talk more. I still have my son's one if you wanted to meet us and get a good look at it. Just let me know. Good luck.

My son was banded at CT when he was 8 mo. and wore it for 3 mos. total. He had mild to mod. plagio. It was a lot of money since we were self-pay, but we are so glad we had it done. The only bad part was that he wore his in the heat of summer so it reaked. Be prepared for a lot of stares to. We ordered a bunch of cute onesies w/ plagio sayings from Cafe Press. I think it made us seem more approachable. Cranial Tech is awesome. They are the ones who did the helmets for the conjoined Eygptian boys. Also, Jennifer at CT is great. Good luck.

My daughter did it at 5 months, at Cranial tech, too. She wore it only 7 weeks, b/c she had a growth spurt right at that time so it worked a little faster. We live almost to Denton, so it was a trek down there for the adjustment appointments- but TOTALLY worth it. She has a perfect little head now, and only needed one band. We stressed over doing it/not doing it, and I truly believe we made the right choice. Why give the child something else to be self-conscious about as a teen? Also- have it painted (the office can give you the name and # of the lady who does it), it keeps it from looking so clinical and shows your babies personality. good luck!

We used the same people and it was so great. My daughter was a preemie so her head was really flat and you would never tell it now. They are really easy going there and work well w/ kiddos. I think its well worth the drive to do it and esp if your insurance covers it. Good Luck!

One of my daughters had to wear the helment and it was so amazing how it works. It really helped my daughter. Yes they do work and yes it is worth the effort if u want ur son to have a better shaped head. My daughter got her's done at Children's and it is called Star Cranial Center of Excellence. It is in Dallas. They did a amazing job on my daughter and it really worked. I was so amazed. Yes he would only be in it for 2 to 4 months depending on how fast his head grows. So I realy recomed doing it. It is great. I was amazed with the results I got. Nancy at Star is great.

My son started to have the flat head as well, At 9 months, my peditrican told me to take him to a specialist before recomending the helmet. We took him to a specialist Dr Fearon, who is really good. He informed us that over time his head would round out and this was something we did not have to worry about, and many babies have this because of the SIDS scare. He is now 3 years and his head looks perfectly fine and has rounded out. My advice is to first take him to the specialist someone like dr Fearon who won't try to sell you on a helmet when not needed, he is very honest. It is better to do this first since the helmet is kind of expensive and your insurance may not cover it. Dr Fearons number is ###-###-#### He is really good, kids with deformities come to Dallas from all over the country to be treated by him , I highly recomend him. Also there were some other moms who recomended him in a simliar post to this situation.

My son who is 8 1/2 months old has one now from Cranial Tech. He has had it for 6 weeks and they expect another 4-6 more. He had a moderate case (really wasn't that noticible until you pointed it out), but his ear had shifted so they were not even. It was a hard decision for us, but he adjusted to it immediately and has had no problems at all with it. It also helped that our insurance covered it 100%. I have noticed a difference in his head already and I'm glad we did it. You can email me directly if you have any more questions.
