Our house has some dog allergies and we are looking at possible hypoallergenic dogs for our family pet. Does anyone who suffers from dog dander allergies have a soft coated Wheaton terrier? And how are your allergies?

What can I do next?

We got rid of our allergies and no longer have cat/dog issues. However, we do enjoy the low-shed dogs just from a housekeeping (no vacuum) standpoint.

My neighbors had a wheaton because their son had allergies, and he did fine. They now have Tibetan terriers. Other neighbors got a Havanese for the same reason. We had a Cairn terrier before we got rid of our allergies - I can't say she was entirely non-shedding but she wasn't like the golden retrievers or most other dogs where all you do is vacuum. A friend with asthma came over to visit to see if she could handle a Cairn, and she was fine while she was here but not perfect the next day - not sure if it was due to the dog or not. We now have a terrier mix from a shelter - not sure of her exact parentage but she appears to be Cairn/Affenpinscher/Dandie Dinmont terrier - and she doesn't shed, even less than our purebred Cairn.

My niece got a Portuguese water dog - same reason. Other friends have a golden-doodle and another has a "schnoodle" (schnauzer/poodle). Lots of dogs mixed with poodle are popular for allergy sufferers.

I think you could consider spending some time with a dog before you make a decision, or you could consider nutritional allergy abatement (no shots, no meds) like we did, or both.

I think that poodles are supposed to be good dogs for allergy sufferers. I understand that it's the dander that causes the problem. You might talk to your allergist and see what he or she recommends.

(Don't know anything about Wheaton terriers, by the way...) :)

My dog allergy is relatively mild anyway, but we had a soft-coated Wheaton terrier and he didn't bother my allergies at all.

My oldest DD is off the charts allergic to dog dander. We've had our soft coated wheaton terrier for about 4 years and he's wonderful! Perfect family dog and no allergy problems what-so-ever!

I am a dog person...and have always been.
A non-shedding dog still has dander.

With the dog and a kid with allergies, I give the dog a bath once a week (less in the winter), I do not use fertilizers on the lawn (shoes and paws carry toxins), I use ALL green cleaners in the house and on the floors---for our health and for the health of the dog...and especially for allergies !
I wipe my floors with a dry Swiffer, too...every other day.
Do not let the dog sleep on the beds.

You should be fine w/ a wheaton terrier. See if you could spend time with the dog ahead of time.

I had a Wheaton growing up and I had allergies, but he never aggravated them. They are great dogs and I would love to have another one. Too bad my daughter has reacted to dog saliva and not just dander.
