Are There Things That "Take You Back"

My boys love all different types of music...country, classical, rock, current top 10...

well today they went to YouTube and played "The Final Countdown" by Europe - my husband and I looked at each other and said "wow....that's been a long time....no hear...."

I know we've had movies or songs that take you back to a time and place that just do something to you - whether laughing or crying....

Bob and I's song is "Angel Eyes" by the Jeff Healy band - we stop what we are doing and dance...unless of course we are driving. Do you have a song, movie, scent - something that just "takes you back?"

Thanks for sharing!

Living Years by Mike and the Mechanics reminds me of my senior year when my father was battling colon cancer. Whenever I need to cry, I fire up the iPod.

On a happier note, Bruce Springsteen's "Glory Days" reminds me of my sister and I swimming in a friend's cousin's pool. Good times :-).

Then there's the movie "Beaches" (insert box of Kleenex here) and on a funnier note, the song, "Slim Shady," which reminds me of hanging out in a bar with my co-workers, one who became my husband, and father of my DD :-). And no, he is not the Slim Shady type at all. The song was just out at the time.

Great post, by the way!

Bradley Cooper just became People Magazine's Sexiest Man Alive, which I celebrated by playing the Alias Soundtrack my friend made me a few years ago. Suddenly I was reminded of the times when it seemed perfectly logical to drive 45 minutes 1 way to watch Alias weekly with my friend. Good times.

And whenever I hear "How Bizarre" I think of high school and taco bell tuesday, when another friend of mine and I would go to taco bell after school and before play practice.

One night recently I was driving home from watching Glee at a friend's house (luckily 5 minutes away this time!) and a Counting Crows song came on. It took me back to a hundred nights of driving home from playing Monopoly/Risk/Poker on Friday and Saturday nights (we were rebels!) in high school and college and having my boyfriend playing the Crows, which were his favorite band.

yes I have a few... but as soon as I went to think about which ones (Most are good memories...), the only ones I could think of are 3 songs that reminded me of a firned who passed away while I was a Senior in HS. "Foolish Games" - Jewel, "Desperado" - Eagles (played at his memorial/funeral) and "I love you Always forever" - Donna Lewis

"The Final Countdown", omg! I have not heard that in AGES! That takes me back to growing up in the '80s and watching too much MTV at a young age (when they used to play music!!).

Any song from the '80s reminds me of my childhood, of course, but the songs that really get me nostalgic are those I listened to and were popular when my oldest daughter was born in 2005. I am a huge Coldplay fan and had just discovered them, so any song from their "X & Y" album chokes me up. I remember listening to them before I had her, then two weeks later I was in the car driving, listening to the CD as always, but she was in the backseat... it was surreal. Gets me every time!

Music definitely makes me think of good times and bad times. Except for my above example, I find the music that was prevalent when I was going through the bad times sticks more, honestly!

This has nothing to do with music - but I volunteer in the elementary school library and whenever I see a girl check out a book by Judy Blume, Beverly Cleary or a Nancy Drew book -- I get a little misty!

Music will do that to me. It's funny because I can't think of a specific song right now but when I hear them on the radio will do it. I take it back, Amarillo by Morning just popped into my head.

Also Preferred Stock cologne, I was big back in my day. :)

Bwahahaha! I meant to say IT was big back in my day, not I was big back in my day. Whole different meaning

The movie Adventures in Babysitting takes me back to 6th grade with my 2 bffs (yep, still friends with them nearly 30 years and a million moves later). Always makes me laugh and pick up the phone.
Certain smells, foods, etc make me think of people. Most notably, I went through a garden full of gardenias and just burst into tears (and I'm not normally a crier)....it made me think of my grandma and I actually looked around to see if she was around (she passed away 8 years ago). I mentioned it to Mom, and she said Grandma's lotion smelled like gardenias. Different foods, music, etc make me think of good times and people from the past.
The Flame by Cheap Trick is a particularly strong one that puts me sitting on a picnic table by the neighborhood pool in 7th grade with my friends. Some songs have me at slumber parties. The Dance has me dancing at the skating rink in 9th grade. Obsession cologne, lol. Man, I loved that smell. Too many songs to mention----there's so many! I think my teen years were just one long soundtrack; everything is wrapped up in songs.

I graduated high school in 1984 and loved classic and more pop of that day. Gotta love the '80s!!!

When I was driving all over Southern California in February an March looking to solidify a new career, I would put on this type of music to put me in a good mood and certainly less nervous!

"Last Dance" by Donna Summer ... I think is the name of the song ... last chance, last dance for love or something like that ... all of my high school dances ended with that. Anytime I see a man in uniform I think of my time in JROTC and our military balls - those were the best! There are others but I think I will keep them for me

There are a ton of things! Mostly though it's classic country, no particular song. I don't listen to it much anymore but if I'm feeling a bit nostalgic about my youth I'll flip the station over & remember working on horse ranches, going dancing, wishing I could spend my life in the rodeo.
Oh, here's a particular one, "Margarittaville," takes me back to the summer of '97 on Lake Texoma with all of my buddies & the "love of my life" (insert eye roll here) whom I left at the end of the summer, joined the army & ran away! Ahhh...good memories :-)

Way back in 1968 a friend was killed in a terrible car accident along with 3 other highschool kids. I was at her house the morning when her M. "got the call"..She was in the 8th grade with me at the time. I never knew if it was true or not and you know how sometimes morbid rumors take hold, but we all heard that when the police arrived on the scene of the accident the 8 track tape had popped out and when it was pushed back in, it was on the song "Live For Today" by The GrassRoots. I cant hear that song and not think about Paula. It still makes me sad. And I shudder everytime I remember the scream from her M. when she answered the phone as I stood in the doorway.
The other song that has memories for us is "Bobby's Girl" and we always get up and dance. (yes his name is Bob),, and Patsy Cline singing "Can I have This Dance".
