my son is only 5, but today I noticed he has very strong underarm body odor. Has anyone else had this with their kiddo? 5 seems so young to need deodorant!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for the response! He does eat a lot of meat. Which a friend pointed out has hormones. Not a lot of junk though as he is naturally hyper so we try to stay clear of junk. I bought him toms of Maine deodorant before I even read this. So hopefully that works. Thanks again so much!

My 6 yo daughter has had bo after coming from outside. She is almost 7 and it has been for about 6 months. Her daughter thinks though she is going through early Puberty sigh... :( ... as she has all 5 signs of getting her period early (acne/blackheads, bo, growth spurts every 3 months vs 6 mo, getting fat in the breast area & pubic hair)... Said to think it at her age.

Anyways she uses deodarant. I use the All natural Tom's brand and it works great. She puts it on every morning and if playing outside in the evening she will reapply.

Also you can watch kids diet. Is he eating a lot of junk? Horomone based foods?

Hi S.,

All body odors come from diet. Strangely enough if you've traveled to foreign countries, there are obvious different body type odors; their diets are different....There are so many synthetic chemicals in foods now (pesticides, preservatives, hormones, antibiotics, etc) that you have to actually fight against what we eat these days. Fast foods are the worst. Eating out is not really good either. You need to read the back of packaging at the grocery store as well. Body odor is a red flag. Other health problems can arise from processed foods.

Get your son on an absorbable multivitamin/mineral complex and change his diet and I bet money you'll see the odors going away....

Regards,

M.

someone told me she knew of kids that had BO and their ped recommended switching to organic milk and it worked. Not sure if it's because of the rbst in regular milk...you might be able to get away with rbst free mlk. i would mention it to the ped if it continues...it could be a hormonal issue.

some little ones need deordorant at a young age. my neighbor was like that( 3 and needed it). i believe that you can buy some cream deodorant that he can dip his little finger in andspread under his arm. good luck.

HI S.,

I don't agree completely about the diet. My daughter is 6 and has body odor (mostly just under her arms). We eat a very healthy diet... vegetarian and mostly organic. She's never eaten at a fast food restaurant. We switched the body soap we were using, as she has really sensitive skin and I had been exclusively using Aveeno. That seemed to do the trick for us. We'll see how the summer goes... I've read a bunch of responses to this from previous posts and it doesn't seem to be that uncommon.
Good luck!

My son needed deodorant for about 6 months when he was 5... then not again for over 2 years (BO completely went away)... now this week we snagged dad's off the shelf to use it again.

Our ped says it's really common for BO to come and go as they grow and their hormones fluctuate.

To note: there really are several types of body odor. There's diet related body odor, dying bacteria body odor, hormonal / human scent body odor.
