My mom has the same problem and loves Feria because of the coverage. The color always looks true to the box. Ladies,another suggestion would be to try a hair schooling institute like Hair Professionals. I was very weary myself, but being a single mother on a very tight budget I gave it a try and the outcome was great. Good luck !

I just started doing the same thing to save money. I've only done it once but I used Nice and Easy. It worked fine and I love the color. It's definitely an easy way to save some money! Good luck!

Find another place to cut corners, or go without hair color. Color and highlights are different, and the over the counter color is not the same as professional color. Your hair designer will hate you for it, when you go to her to get you hair fixed. It will cause her grief when you decide to go back to her.

I have had nice success with clairol nice and easy. I don't know about your highlights however. You may have to have those done at a salon. when I had highlights, I was able to use the clairol nice and easy root touch up to extend my color! it helped save me a bundle.

It sounds like my hair is the same color as yours. I use Feria and find that I like it better than when I was getting my hair professionally highlighted. My brother's girlfriend, who is a hairdresser, asked where I was getting my hair done. She was shocked when I told her I did it myself!

I have tried this too many times to mention...
Every time has been a debacle! I have ended up spending more to correct the color than it would have costed me to just find somebody cheap to do it!
Highlights are tricky. Most hair colors will leave odd tones on highlights (greens etc). I have also had trouble with my hair pulling too much red, especially with store bought. My hair is light brown (no noticable red in it what so ever) and almost all hair colors leave the root area just on the top of my head looking copper and the rest OK.
Even some salon colors turn out too red, and I have had to go back.
At home, I have to use a dark brown, and when I use that I look "goth". Some people can color hair at home with no problems. I think (not 100% sure, it has been a while) you have to use a semi permanent color on hightlighted hair. You should NEVER try to change your haircolor at home more than 2 shades lighter or darker than your original color. (and a "shade" is not alot) Good luck! I have a friend that does my hair for me, but I have also heard fantastic sams does color and it is very reasonable. Esp if you get partial highlights or lowlights, they just do the top 1/2, but you still get the overall look of having it colored.
Good luck! I am only putting this on here because I have spent sooo much getting my hair fixed! (usually $100+, and that was 6 years ago!) Also, always do the strand test and do not be afrid to call the 800 number on the box. They do have people there to help advise you. They helped me, but again, "goth" is just not my best look!

I used to use Feria and liked the color but I started needing a little more coverage for gray (sad, I know). About a year ago, I switched to Excellence and really like it. It comes with a comb applicator tip, which might be easier for you to use when you first do it yourself.

If you're going to do it yourself, my advice is to be conservative with the color at first (don't pick anything too far off of what you have now); ask for help to get the back so you ensure coverage; when you recolor, don't pull the color through to the ends till the last few minutes -- sometimes people who color at home end up with crunchy, overprocessed ends because they're recoloring that hair too much. Oh yeah, wear an old button up shirt when you're applying the color so you don't ruin your clothes and clean up any drips immediately.

The problem with some home products is that if you get it professionally done later it can mess up your hair. I forget what the ingredient that you have to watch out for. But there is something in some of the home care products that affects your hair, until it grows out and is cut off. If you get it done in the salon even years later, your hair will pick up on the base color of the dye (ie: green, etc). SO if you do color your hair, keep a good record of what product you use and when. And inform the next person who dyes your hair. If you have short hair it may grow out and be cut off fast, so it might not matter as much as long hair. The good news is that the hair stylist said you can get back to a decent color just darker then your natural color, but who wants to deal with that.

Dear A.:

If you are looking to just lighten your hair, you can use straight lemon juice, that will make it lighter. That's as inexpensive and safe as you can get.

I have used Ms. Clairol nice 'n easy many years ago, and it worked ok for me. That's also easy.

I've never done highlights but have colored my hair at home for years. I like Herbal Essences the best, but Clairol is usually really cheap at Walmart and it works just fine. I do suggest you do the allergy test especially the first time you use a product. I've been bad and haven't done one in a long time...maybe someone could comment on those.

I've used Garnier Nutrisse for a few years now and it's my favorite. It leaves your hair soft.

Hi A.- I have done hair color at home. You might want to run to Sallys Beauty Supply and check out color and see what they think you should use or just run to walmart and grab a highlighting kit . It really depends on how light you want your highlights and how much of your hair you want to highlight. I honestly would tell you to run to a beauty supply store to tell them what you want and what they would use. If just want your out growth done they will tell you the best way to do it .

You can use the professional color they sell at Sally's,etc. They sell the same stuff my hairdresser uses. Also highlights may best be left to professionals, but again they sell the same items at a beauty supply store, so ask a professional what to use. It is hard, but with the current economic state, who can afford the $120 a month or more?

I like the Loreal Preference brand and have used it for years. Like you, my hair is blond and I just wanted it a little lighter shade and it works great.

I use preference by L'Oreal. I have reddish brown hair and combine two different colors to get the shade I want. I am totally happy with the result. However, I do wonder if I am damaging my unduly by using drugstore hair dye. I'll be interested to see the responses to your question to see if anyone can answer that!

I have been using Feria for years and its super easy and it is the most color fast of the do it yourself hair dyes (or so i'm told!). I have always been very happy with it and its only $10 a box. Often times it will be on sale at Target and Walgreens as well. While nothing looks quite as good as salon hair, Feria does give some depth and color variation. Good luck!

A. K I have been coloring my hair since 1974 and i have always used Preference by Loreal and never had any problems. I have tried Clairol and don't like it as it makes my hair feel like straw. deb
