I used to work for 4 podiatrists who always recommended New Balance shoes. I have been wearing them (not the same pair HAHA) for almost 10 years and I love them. I buy them for my kids too.
I've recently started working out (mainly exercise bike, treadmill, and elliptical) and have discovered that I'm well-overdue for a new pair of athletic shoes. I'm curious about the Skechers Shape-Ups, but not sure that I want to spend the money on them. Are they really worth $100? I'm open to any and all other suggestions for shoes--brands, types, prices. What would be the BEST shoes for these types of activities??? Thanks in advance!
Thanks everyone! I'm happy to hear that I can rule out the expensive Shape Ups! I will go and check out the Asics and other running shoes.

I would suggest visiting a store that specializes in fitting you for the right workout shoe (NOT a footlocker in the mall!). I have been an avid runner/exerciser for years, and visiting a specialty store will give you the best results. You can try on tons of different shoes and at some you can even run on a treadmill and they observe how you run (where foot lands, etc) and recommend a shoe based upon their observations. I love "body and sole" - not sure you have one near you. But, I am sure you can find something similar.
I spend $85 every 9 months for my asics and love them! I have heard the shape-ups really don't do much, but do some research and ask the pros and make your choice based upon that. Good luck and happy exercising!
No no and no! Those shape-up style shoes are gimmicks and a waste of money (yeah, I know people are going to argue about that but whatever). You'd be better off going to a specialty store and having a trained salesperson examine your gait, strike pattern, and other issues in order to get a shoes that works best for you and your activity.
Bzzzymom hit the nail on the head so I won't repeat what was said - just re-read it and know that it was excellent advice!
You need to replace your shoes every 300-500 miles depending on how hard you are on them. Another good way to determine if your shoes need replacing is to look at the shoe's midsole (google 'parts of a shoe' to see what the midsole is) . If you see 'wrinkling' that is a sign that the midsole is starting to wear out and you're not getting the support and shock absorption that you need. The midsole tends to break down well before the outsole (bottom) does.
Good luck! Personally I prefer Asics because I'm an overpronater. They're fantastic shoes but what works for one may not work for another. I know their website, along with New Balance's website are both great sources for learning more about what type of shoe you should get and why.
S.,
I have a friend who loves Asics. I can't wear them. I prefer Saucony. So try them on and walk around in them some. The shape of your foot determines which will work for you.

My favorite are New Balance. My husband and I both swear by them. I think the Shape Ups are more for just wearing everyday, not necessarily working out in.
I couldn't believe that I spent about 80 bucks for a pair of Merrells, but 2 years later I can say they are the best shoes I've ever owned. and they look brand new forever!
I don't think you want to be on a treadmill with those shape up shoes. I would think you would twist an ankle if you were doing anything other than walking at a regular pace. An aerobic shoe or running shoe should be fine for what you are doing. Go into the shoe store and tell them what you need and they will help you find the right shoe.
I recently saw a pair of Dr. Scholl's that appeared to be like the Shape-Ups for $30 at Wal-Mart. Maybe check those out. I am considering them myself.
