I am a single mother with a four year old boy. I am currently in cosmetology school and I live in upstate NY. In two years I am planning on moving to Tenessee. However, considering how far away I live so far away I am hoping to get some advice. I would like be near an area like Chattanooga. However I also love the country. Of course my other concern are the schools. By the time we move my son will be going into 2nd grade.

What can I do next?

Tennessee is a pretty big state. Is there somewhere in particular you are looking at? Are you trying to find a job and you just need to know what areas to look for? What industry are you in?

We used to live in East Ridge, which is a suburb of Chattanooga. It was very pretty there and the schools were really good. I have other friends who live outside of Nashville and love it. The suburbs outside of Memphis can be nice, but you probably don't want to live in Memphis. More info could help you get better answers.

East TN is nice, but as it takes 6 hours to drive from one end of the state to the other you may want to narrow your search. Memphis area is terrible with crime and schools that have a hard time keeping teachers. Part of the state has plains (west), the middle is rolling hills to the plateau and east tn is Mtns and rivers. We're moving to Chattanooga/ East Ridge in a few months. Very beautiful, tons to do, and great schools. Google the four big cities : Memphis, Nashville, Chattanooga, and Knoxville. Wikipedia has great info on city size, schools, crime, and demographics.

Please get a year round job before moving. I am pretty shocked that some jobs last from April to September.
