Auditory Specialist Needed

Hello all,

My grandson, Samuel, is partially deaf. He just heard from a hearing aid provider that he’s lost total hearing in his left ear. He tells us that he’s not noticed a difference and he’s great about knowing when the current aid is low on battery, needs cleaning, etc. which all affect the hearing range in that ear. It was rated last June at about 25%-30% hearing. His parents are not confident in this provider and would like to hear from you that have hearing issues of a great doctor to evaluate this problem. This provider said his hearing range has changed drastically in the last 6 months (might be true, but we want to make certain before doing any drastic measures).

Thanks for all your assistance with this very delicate and concerning health issue.

I don't know where you live, but my best advice is that you make sure you see a pediatris audiologist. It iis vital that the audiologist knows how to work with children and specializes in their care. Otherwise, I would not trust the results. It is also urgent that you find out right away if his hearing has changed, as you well know. The other posters have given you great resources, and I recommend both. They are sometimes hard to get into though with long waiting lists for new patients. If you live near Grapevine there is Dr. Tara Wheeler at Heard it Through the Grapevine Audiology. She specializes in pediatrics and in fact serves most of the school districts in the area also. She may be able to see your grandson sooner. Good Luck!

I would take him to an audiologist. I would look into one at Cook Children's or Children's Medical Center. He would be evaulated by someone who works with children and is a licensed audiologist. I am not sure from you post but you said hearing aid provider not audiologist.

B.,

My ten year old son has bilateral sensineural hearing loss of over 60% in both ears. We searched EVERYWHERE before finding the very BEST in audiology care for our son. He has seen his audiologist now since he was five years old. She is irreplaceable in my book. She keeps me up to speed on things I never seem to be able to find out about on my own and she also is very understanding, patient and caring with my son. My son also has needed to have tubes in his ears before, as he has allergies which cause him to retain fluid every winter. Any time she gets a drastic change in hearing evaluation, she makes sure his ears are free of wax buildup (which happens a lot with children wearing aids, as the ears naturally build wax overload to try and push any foreign object..the aid..out of the ear). She always makes sure there is no fluid or other reason the test could be showing drastically different also.
Unless your grandson has been diagnosed with progressive hearing loss in that left ear, I would wonder if the test results were correct. We drive quite a way to see our audiologist, but she is worth it. Her name is Ann Howell at The Callier Center for Communication Disorders in Dallas. Her number is ###-###-####. If you have any other questions, feel free to email me!
Blessings,
T.

Hello B.,
I have been deaf/hard-of-hearing since I was 5 years old. All my life I have been going to Beltone Hearing Aids. Located in Arlington. Now it is called Fonner Hearing Aids. They are on Randoll Mill. I can't remember the number of the address, but I sure do have their phone number. I will be happy to give that to you. They are the best and I truly trust them. Their hearing test are free. Just tell them that I told you to go there and give them my name. B. and they know who I am. My sister go there too. She is hard-of-hearing too. They know her too. Their phone number is ###-###-####. I wish you the best. Does your grandson and anyone in the family know sign langague? It is very important for him in the future. I live in Flower Mound. I never go anywhere else, but them only. I know Ms. Fonner's mother and father in laws, because they were the one who helped me since I was 5. Now Julie takes over and she help me too. I am a sinble mom with two beautiful girls. Good luck and please keep me inform. If you have any question feel free to ask. I would love to teach the family and your grandson sign langague. If interested. God bless you.

B.,

I strongly recommend Cook Children's Hospital and their physicians. My grandson was diagnosed with cancer last November (hard for us to imagine it's been one year!) and the physicians all rallied around him. He had a host of caregivers, including audiologists, who monitored his progress. Cook Children's takes a team approach to your child's care. They work with each other and with you to determine the cause for the symptoms and the best treatment. I am pleased to say that my grandson is (for now) considered cancer-free. He still sees the physicians on a monthly basis for continual monitoring. Through all of his treatments, my grandson lost his sight. We are working with their early childhood intervention specialists to prepare him for life without sight. (He will be 2 in December.)

I will stop now, because I think you can read my passion. Best of luck, and do consider Cook Children's, at least for diagnosis!
