AZO Urinary Tract Infection Test Strips -- Inconclusive Color

I've had some vague UTI symptoms the last day or two -- occasional burning, lower abdominal pain (although that could be due to IBS), back pain (which, again, could be something else). No real frequency, no urgency, per se. I've had these symptoms before and gone in to the doc (ER once on a weekend), and every time my results have been negative. The only time I ever tested positive at the doc's was my first UTI, and I KNEW beyond the shadow of a doubt what it was before I went in.

So, anyway, I decided to try out those new AZO UTI test strips, figuring I would know for sure one way or the other whether I needed to go in to the urgent care clinic (why do these things always happen on weekends?). However, the test results came out inconclusive. The leukocytes (WBCs) came out obviously negative. But for the nitrites, the pad changed to a sort-of peach color (more dark yellow), so I have no idea what that means! It wasn't EXACTLY the color on the bottom range of positive, but kinda close. I really don't want to have to go in to the urgent care place if it's not necessary. So- do you think it's okay to wait until tomorrow and try it again? I don't have any fever, so I would guess it's okay. However, I don't want to end up not treating something and getting septicemia (sp?), either. Anyone have experience with the test NOT being definitive?

So What Happened?

I re-did the test this morning and it was clearly negative, so I seem to be in the clear for now. I got great advice from everyone, and will try all the things y'all said. I so appreciate the advice and concern! Mamasource Moms are awesome!

The common positives on a urine dip stick that indicate a UTI is blood, leukocytes, protein and nitrates. If you don't have leukocytes and blood (aka Heme) then maybe it's just starting? I know that when these things hit me, it's like immediate. If you are not uncomfortable, you can try the cranberry and drink lots of water to flush. The cranberry will help change your ph making it more acidic which is an undesirable enviroment for bacteria to live in. I would get a urine culture done tomorrow.

I take a product called Cranbarrier and I totally recommend it to anyone with UTI issues, even children. It's a chewable tablet you take once a day and tastes like a Sweet Tart.

Hey S., I had those same symptoms off and on for several years, always thinking they were a UTI. I rarely had one but when I did I always had a fever. The rest of the time it turned out to be kidney stones. They are rare in women but unfortunately, they still do occur. Originally, I was diagnosed with IBS but now think it was all due to the kidney stones. The end of the summer is a prime time for them to show up and cause problems because of the tendency to get dehydrated in the heat. I also suffered more with them in January right after all the stress of the holidays makes one forget to take good care of themselves. I recommend going to your gynecologist and telling them the whole story, not just saying you think you have a UTI. They are very accustomed to dealing with UTI issues but will also be more attuned to any other female issues that could be causing your symptoms. They may send you to a urologist but the ob/gyn docs are considered primary care physicians so go there first. I say skip the urgent care clinic. If you can't make it until Monday go to the actual ER where they have all the diagnostic equipment that you might need. After going to the GP and a Gastroenterologist, the ER was where I was finally diagnosed with kidney stones. Get some fresh lemons and put it in your water and drink a lot of water in the meantime. Hope you feel better soon.

I am a midwife and see UTI's a lot. Drink unsweetened cranberry juice, or you can take the tablets they make. Also you can take uva-ursi for 10 days along with vitamin C and this well help clear up a UTI.

Drink an entire container of unsweetened cranberry juice/concentrate from whole foods if you can stand it. Or sweetened if you can't. It really helps stop a urinary tract infection in the beginning stages .
