Babies Are Not eating--Help!

I have two girls, a 3 year old and 8 month old, who both recently had a stomach bug. They had it for a few days each and have been feeling better the past few days. My problem is that I can't really get either of them to eat anything. I know that it takes a little time to recover, I am just a little worried about them. The 3 year old eats, but is just eating really small amounts. My 8 month old, though, will not eat any baby food at all! She's still nursing, so I know she's getting nutrients, but she had been eating 3-4 jars of food a day. I can tell she's lost weight. I guess I'm asking how to approach it and if other people have had this experience?

What can I do next?

Hey E.! We are going through the same thing. My almost 3 year old was sick on Halloween, then I was sick the following Tues. and my 7 mo. old was sick his past Fri. Non of us are eating like normal yet. I've been sneaking Pedialyte in Grace's juice and the Md also suggested I give the baby Pedialyte mixed with a little juice, even though I had not even started him on juice yet. Gives me some comfort that my appetite isn't the greatest yet, either. Guess we'll come aroudn in a few more days!!

Hop everyone is feeling better soon............L.

Don't worry as they will eat when they are doing better and since they are small it will take awhile before they feel like eating again. I went through this with my son and it took him awhile and then he started to eat again.

well, as a peds nurse i am here to tell you that kids have an instinctive knowledge when they are pukey. they KNOW that if they eat a lot, they will puke. so they don't eat. give it some time, try to tempt them, but as long as they are drinking enough they will be fine. if you force the issue it will make things worse. good luck!

My dad would give this to me as a kid when I was sick. I did it with my kids when younger. Jello drink.... make jello in the pot and let cool but not to cool you want it like a warm tea. It helps the tummy start feeling full. It warm jello was always a sign that I was getting better.

Hi E.,
I give my little ones lots of soup. I put the broth in a sippy cup and let them play with the noodles and chicken pieces. It also helps now that Campbell's has all the "fun" noodle shapes for the older ones. Hope everyone is better soon!

After babies have been sick their really no different than us their stomach shrinks ,so while their growing their little tummys back theres always popsicles for the 3 years old its sugar water pretty much like some of the pedilyte to fell better about that just read the ingredients, substance is what counts, and the baby try just half the amount of cereal or rice .It will be okay the patience is the hardest part with litle guys

I would tell you that those little ones KNOW that they arent ready to go back to eating what they normally do yet...so just let them do as they want for the next few days. The little one who is still nursing is getting everything she needs...the toddler is building up slowly. Offer them bland things...dry toast...clear soups...applesauce...things that you would want if YOUR tummy were bothering you. Of course you cant' give the baby as many things as you would give the toddler...but just take it slow and they will get back to normal. If it continues for another week I would say...call the Pediatrician and see what he/she says.
It sounds like you have your priorities in order...The Lord, your husband and your children...what a wonderful life you have!!!
God bless you all

Hey E.,
Just keep your strength up with lots of great high quality protein and your nursing child will be just fine and get back on track with the baby food in good time. Babies don't over eat like adults will, so they eat when their bodies need it, period. As for the three year old, I know my girls do that same thing. Sometimes up to two weeks or so before they get back on track. My guess is, she just isn't hungry, or ready to eat. Just keep offering high quality protein ridden snacks and other healthy choices continually, and in time she will bite. We always have food sitting around and such on the counter ie. strawberries sitting in a bowl/ which is sitting in a bowl of ice ( which eventually becomes cool water) ... Slices of oranges and other just snacks.... Toddlers eat randomly and here and there. If it is there, and without much effort to get to, they will eat. Above all else. Seek the Holy Spirit's leading on what to provide for her that she WILL want, and that will provide the best sense of the answer on this. God can make a way where there IS no other way. That is the Holy Spirit's job anyways, So ASK, and the answer will indeed come.
Much Love ! Be Blessed. Your children are so very lucky to have a Mom who covers their concerns with prayer:o) !

This may not apply to little ones, but I had a stomach bug this past spring for a few days. I couldn't keep anything down. When I started feeling better/ hungry, everything I ate hurt! A medical friend told me that you have to start off slowly with bland things because your gall bladder will object. I went back to gatorade and slowly added soup and bland pureed things and worked up to normal... slowly. I knew if I ate something I shouldn't and it took about 1-2 weeks to get back to normal eating. I would think... take it slowly. When they are hungry, they'll eat.

Hi E., I have a 3 1/2 yr old and everytime she's been sick with any kind of stomach bug, her Dr. tells me not to worry about what she eats or doesn't eat, but only to be concerned with the amount of liquids she is taking in, so that she doesn't get de-hydrated. And everytime she has been right and before long my daughter is right back to eating normal with no ill effects. Good luck!
