We have a beautiful orange and white full grown male cat and recently my son seems to have developed an allergy to him. Also we have another baby due at the end of October and I am worried about having an indoor/ outdoor cat. We need to get rid of him but I don't know how. I love him very much and I rescued him when he was a tiny starving kitten from DFW airport. He was covered in fleas and grime and tiny. He was all bones and on the verge of dying. I took him to the vet and got food/milk for him cleaned him up and brought him back to health. Since he was wild the vet said to hold him a lot with skin contact so he would warm up to people. He is a very sweet, smart and loving cat. Very unussual too though. He does not like people except for our family. He only goes to the bathroom outside and does not do well to stay inside. We have a cat window and he comes in and out as he pleases. He was an inside only cat until about a year ago he just started going bonkers in the house. He had too much energy and could not be couped up. Now he can run through fields and play all day and we are all happier for it. I just don't know how to find a place that would allow him to be a free outdoor cat and also indoors for food and sleep. I don't want to take him to a shelter but I don't know anyone who would want a fully grown cat. ALso I am worried he won't warm up to anyone else. I don't know what to do.

Sorry I did not put it but he is neutered, we had it done when he was 6 months.

Are you sure it is to the cat? Why are you afraid of having an inside/outside cat? When our son was born we had 3 or our 4 inside/outside dogs, we live in the city, close to railroad tracks, and when the dogs go in/out they do bring in lots of allergens, but he does not have any allergy problems. Is he having running nose, and eye irratation? With the change of the weather since the hurricane scare everything has been stirred up. You love the cat...You love the kid...give it some time and treat your little one with some OTC allergy meds, and since he is inside/outside it could be something he is bringing in.
Try to post him on Craigslist.org. Good Luck

If you go to the website petfinder.com, you can search for shelters there. Just make sure you find a no-kill shelter! Another great organization is Feral Friends (feralfriends.org). I adopted cats from them and used to volunteer with them, and they are WONDERFUL!

This may seem off topic, but have you had the cat neutered? The change in his personality (wanting to go outside) could be due to his "coming of age." Neutering might allow him to stay indoors and avoid bringing pollen, etc. in on his coat.

One good thing about keeping the cat is studies have shown kids raised with pets have LESS allergies/asthma. If you're set on finding him a new home, I would recommend you contact Kool Kats.

Try posting on craigslist. Alot of cities have ordinances against having "outdoor cats" so you might have an issue with that, he may have to be rehomed into being an indoor cat. I would have allergy testing done on my child before giving up my pet though. The allergy tests don't hurt and you would know for sure what your child is reacting to (unless you really just are tired of hassling with the cat).

Are you sure it's the cat - i.e., have you had allergy tests done? If this is an indoor/outdoor cat and you're just noticing a reaction, it could well be the pollen on the cat's coat - right now we are at the peak of Ragweed season - if that cat is wandering thru fields of ragweed, then he's sure to bring that home. We have lots of allergies in my family - just not to cats (we have all been tested by an allergist). But, to minimize the exposure to the dust and other stuff that cats drag around, we keep them out of the bedroom - that's the most important space to keep clean if you have allergies. Also, a HEPA air filter (which makes a great white noise machine) would help tremendously in her bedroom, as well as having one in the living area. Cat allergies without other allergies is actually quite unusual - common house dust (that hosts a wide variety of potential allergens) is often the source of many allergic reactions. We also make sure that any item the cat spends alot of time on is washable.

It sounds like you've provided a wonderful home for this cat and honestly from what you say, I doubt he would ever warm up to anyone else, so I would encourage you to do everything you can to keep him. One option would be to buy a dog kennel (with a nice covered house) that you could keep him in at nite or give him space in the garage or even a backyard shed. With his personality it is highly unlikely that he would be adopted - there are just too many other cats that would be chosen over him. I'm a cat person and if I would not consider adopting him (and I've had my share of problem cats over the years), I honestly think it would be very difficult to find him a home. Even if someone were to take him, do you really think they'd love him and care for him as well as you have?

I will pray that you will make the right decision for the cat.

Contact a cat rescue like Kool Kats. They are located in the Mid-Cities area and are a wonderful group. We adopted 2 of our cats through them. You can find them online.
