Diapers - if you are looking for cheap price but good quality- Luvs are great- but Target's diapers are so cheap- they are $13 and change for a case! And they work great.

As far as diaper rash cream - if the rash is really bad- I swear by Triple paste. You can buy it online or you can get it at Target, any drugstore, etc. Sometimes they keep it behind the pharmacy counter so if you don't see it just ask.

I SWORE by Johnson's products (most of my cousins, and even friends kids, had rash problems with Baby Magic), and Pampers, Pampers, Pampers!! They didn't leak, and they had the most choices as far as sizing. Stick to "sensitive skin" or aloe vera products for diapering...moisture breeds diaper rash, so don't exacerbate the problem with allergic reactions. On newborns, a warm cloth of plain water is best, mild soap for poop. Follow with either Vaseline or Eucerin to protect the skin from moisture. No talc- if you must use powder ( I love the smell, and my baby was chubby, during the summertime) use only CORNSTARCH BABY POWDER (again, Johnson&Johnson..); alot of baby's have reactions to the perfume in talc, and it's not very absorbant. If you are late (delivery) and have a "scaly" baby, scrap the lotion, and use Eucerin (the clear kind in a jar) or vaseline nursery jelly. BEST WISHES!!

Hi V..I wanted to tell you that I have a GREAT line of baby care products. I'm a consultant for Arbonne International. It's a Swiss skin care line that I absolutely fell in love with about a year ago. I've used nothing but the baby care products on my 5 mo. old son and have great results. Our products are all dermatologist tested, ph correct, hypoallergenic, no MINERAL oil!!, no animal by-products and never tested on animals. I don't know if you know this but most products on the market do have mineral oil. It's a cheap filler and it also is made up of very large molecules that just sit on the skin. It doesn't allow the vitamins and nutrients to absorb into the skin. Also it is a petroleum base. Not good. It means gasoline based. Think of your baby's skin as a second lung. Whatever you put on his/her skin is what they are "breathing into" their little bodies. Our products are PURE, SAFE & BENEFICIAL. It is important to moisturize our little one's skin even though it already feels so soft. They don't have the ability to regulate moisture retention but most products on the market don't really do the job b/c of the mineral oil. Also, I know some of the shampoos and washes smell really nice but chemical fragrances and dyes are also not good for you or your little one. Their skin is sensitive. I have a hair and body wash, body oil, lotion and spf 30. I'd love to give you some samples.

We had a number of baby tubs, started taking baths with our first child and never even tried anything else with the second. The kids like it and by the time they're 2 they've had enough experience in the tub to be able to handle themselves pretty well (not that either of ours is ready to go unsupervised yet).

The trial-and-error method seems to be the way to go diaper-wise. Ours used swaddlers when young and cruisers once they got bigger, but every child is different.

I'll let you go with the other mom's suggestions as far as ointments and powders go, but will add that you should get in with the nurses at the hospital and try to get a couple of containers of "Butt Balm" to take home with you. We discovered the ointment that they use in the hospital (not available over the counter) by accident when our first had a bad rash and we were trying everything (the Butt Balm (labeled as such) was in with some of the stuff that we had from the hospital and had never bothered to try.... It cleared him right up. We only used it when at a loss, but it was great. When we had our 2nd child we managed to take home 2 full containers. He's just turned 1 now and we're almost out, but hopefully he's over his worst rashes.

I use Johnson and Johnson's baby lotion, the pink bottle. But I got a set of the Bedtime Lotion, the purple bottles of Johnson and Johnson and oh my goodness it smells sooooo good! That's my very favorite. Oh I also use Gerber's Grins and Giggles Sweet Pea lotion and baby wash. And as far as diaper stuff goes...I use Balmex when she looks a little red and it works really good for us but that's one of those trial and error kind of things. Some people prefer one over the other.

Hi V., I checked your profile which says you live in Miami. Although Miami is pretty big, there aren't as many health food stores around as there are in other areas of the country. A health food store is the best place to get products that will not harm your baby as much as other commercial products. Burt's Bees in an excellent brand, a little pricey but well worth it.
Wild Oats is on U.S. 1 by Pinecrest, and Whole Foods (which I personally like much better), is in Aventura. You will find all kinds of organic, safe and natural products for your baby at these stores, or you can do a search online.

Check www.burtbees.com. When you go their site, to the left is a list, click on 'baby bees'. When you get that page, look at the column of things to your right and read the description for each of the products. These are the things that I used for my baby, because there are no harmful hidden chemicals and perfumes.

I hope this link works:

Many blessings to you.

A lot of your decision will be a personal preference, and will also depend on what your baby does well with. My little boy was born preemie (under 5lbs) and Huggies diapers worked best for us (Pampers tended to leak and not fit as well for him). My best suggestion for diapers is to sign up for mailings for any major brand you would consider using now. That way, you can start getting coupons and free samples before your baby even arrives.
As for bath products, you'll want something very mild since babies have very sensitive skin. I loved the smell of Johnson's products (especially the bedtime lavender), but had to stop using them when my son developed a rash. We now use Aveeno (made by Johnson's) products since most are fragrance free and hypoallergenic. They are a little more expensive so I always try to sign up for more coupons and look for store sales.
Good luck!

May I suggest... Pampers! Not only are they a great product (I love the swaddler diapers and the sensitive wipes), but they also have a "rewards to grow" program. All you have to do is go to pampers.com and register your products(codes found on the products). Then you get points for each product and can redeem the points for fun educational toys and books! Trust me, you'll be spending a lot on diapers and wipes... why not go with a great product that will give you something fun back! :)
Good luck and happy diaper changing!! :)

I'm no expert b/c like you, I am still pregnant, however, I have bought Pampers Swaddlers. My friend recently had a baby one week ago and she advised me to buy Swaddlers rather than Huggies b/c the Huggies were way too big for her baby (he's 7 pounds). I have been told that while you do need quite a few diapers that babies quickly grow into another size so if you buy en mass, keep the receipts so that you can go back to the store and exchange the Swaddlers or other newborn size diapers for a higher weight. My neighbor's baby is 3 months old and she has found Target brand to work well. Another friend of mine whose baby is over a year used Kirkland. But in the beginning you will need newborn 0-9 lbs. or so.
As for bathing products, I think that's a matter of personal choice. There is a whole suite of organic bathing products for babies available at health food stores. My mom raised me on Johnson and Johnson's Baby Wash which I have received in multitude from my showers. My pediatrician, however, has given me free samples of Dove to use for the baby. The Dove she recommends has no coloring or fragrance.
My dentist told me that when it comes time for brushing teeth or more likely, gums, that I can use a rag with some gentle toothpaste (Tom's) on it.
Good luck!!

Hi V.!

I had my first baby when I was thirty too! (Actually he came just two days before! Happy B-day us!) Anyway! We love Huggies! The Supreme in the all red bag. When my son was first born, I also liked the Pampers Swaddlers but I did NOT like the Pampers Baby Dry (the sides didn't stretch). Anyone I know hates the Luvs and everyone gives mixed reviews on the *cheap* brands such as Walmart and Target. There are coupons every week in the paper so for overall absorption, less leaks, and comfort I choose Huggies.
As for lotions, baby bath and such you will get more than you ever need probably at your baby shower. I have 10 bottles of FULL lotion that I have never used because it didn't agree with my son. (If you want it, let me know! LOL) Also, in the beginning we tried the J&J baby shampoo and it made my son's cradle cap WORSE! The one that I have found that doesn't irritate is Huggies brand WITH SHEA BUTTER. Also wonderful, are the disposable cleansing cloths. I got the J&J ones in the yellow box at a shower and they were fabulous! I have also since tried the Huggies brand and they also are good. Contrary to popular belief sometimes as a new mommy with no child experience, you just won't always "know what to do". Do NOT HESITATE to come back and ask questions! No matter how trivial you think they are, someone on here will have an opinion! It's great! Check your library for those books mentioned, What to Expect the first Year and What To Expect When You're Expecting, I love them! Also for laughs (though the humor is VERY irreverant) check out Jenny McCarthy's Baby Laughs and Belly Laughs. Good Luck sweetie!

Hello V.,
I highly recommend all Weleda baby calendula products. I used the oil to massage my son when he had colic. I also used Aubrey organic baby shampoo and body lotion. The best diaper cream on the planet is PALADIN cream. It clears up everything and is available at any pharmacy without a RX for $3 or $4.
I clothed diapered my son for the first year and nursed for 2 years. There are wonderful velcro cloth diapers, hemp liners, and organic baby products at these websites as well as wool & organic cotton toys & puddle pads, etc. Try Alternativebaby.com and ecobaby.com
Remember to get a few things for yourself like rasberry leaf or mother's milk herbal teas if you intend to nurse.
Best wishes and welcome to motherhood!!!!

I like to use the Johnson's bedtime lotion after my daughter's bath. It smells so good! Also we use the same bath wash, and it comes in a pump. They both have a purple cap. This specific kind helps calm and relax baby. With diapers we started with Pampers Swaddlers size newborn, then size 1, size 2, then we switched to Luv's size 2 because they are just as good or better and half the cost. The bigger you go up in size the more expensive they get and the less diapers in a package you get.

Hope it helps

Pampers are really the best diapers but Luvs are comparable. I used Luvs and I was happy with them. Have a huge supply of Desitin on hand. That was a life (butt) saver. Baby powder is not necessary but if you like the smell then ok. For baby bath I actually used the Johnson's baby shampoo for everything. It was the only thing that did not make my daughter's extremely sensitive skin break out in a rash. I didn't see the need to buy the little bathtub, I just folded up a towel and put in the bottom of the bath with a tiny bit of water and it worked just fine. Have a huge supply of baby wipes too. You don't need to bathe baby daily and the wipes are an easy alternative if they did make huge diaper messes.

I love the Higgies pre-soaped wash clothes. They work great!!! If you use these you nned to find baby shampoo and lotion. Hooded towels are great along with wash clothes. I have the 4-n-1 baby bath and for the past 7+ months it has been great. It has a net area for a newborn to lay back on but be up out of the water and a ring for them to sit in when they are older. It sits up on the kitchen counter so you son't have to bend into the big bath tub. It also closes up for easy storage. Only thing is when opening it up you have to push down h*** o* it to lock so it wont leak. I just keep it open so I don't have to worry about it each time. Good Luck!

BORDEAUX's BUTT PASTE!!!!! This is the BEST product for diaper rash. My son had a severe case of diaper rash to the point that he had little raw spots on his poor little butt. We tried balmex through the whole thing and the diaper rash only got worse. I noticed on my friend's shower registry that she had the butt paste, so I went online to look up some info. Bordeaux's butt paste is great for not only diaper rash, but a long list of other things. My son's diaper rash cleared up quite quickly once we started using it. We also use it at every diaper change as protection against the moisture in the diaper that causes diaper rash. We use the Johnsons head to toe baby wash and pampers sensitive wipes (no fragrance little to no alcohol) to reduce irritation.

Personally, I like both Huggies and Pampers for diapers. For baby products, Gerber is good. You may want to join a baby club at the grocery store. I know Winn-Dixie has it and for every $200 you spend, I think you get $10.00 off an order. Believe me, you spend tons. It goes faster then you would think. Also, make sure you check all ads because CVS and Walgreens always have Huggies or Pampers diapers go on sale for a great price and you may want to start clipping coupons for baby products as well. I would have never made it with all the deals and coupons, but then again, I'm a single mother. Good luck and God Bless.

Hi, I agree with Christy, Burt's Bees, California Baby, Aubrey Organics, Weleda are great. Plus Mustela products. We ended up using Mustela and California Baby almost exclusively. Be sure to buy one jar of California Baby Calendula Cream - this is amazing stuff! From fingernail scratches to diaper irritation, to bug bits - you name it, this cream will clear it up right away! My baby did not have cradle cap but I know some babies that did and it cleared it up right away. All of it is pricier than regular store brands but they last a LONG time and it's just worth using something better for your baby than the commercial store bought yuck. We used cloth diapers until my baby was 10 months old. Florida has very few diaper services but you can google diaper services to see what's out there.

Any baby bath is good, it is realy up to you on how much you want to spend. I put all my kids in a the kitchen sink to wash them. I also had the expensive baby baths too. So that is up to you. Diaper brands the only thing I can say is that is up to your baby. You can use the expensive ones or the cheep ones. But it is up to the baby if they get a rash or not. I don't like the expensive ones and have used the cheeper ones and have not had a problem. I have also used the expensive ones and have had the kids get a rash from them. So once again that is up to how much you want to spend especially in a new born since you WILL be going through them like crazy. I have used the Walmart brand white cloud with no problems and the Target Brand with no problems on my 15mo old and my other 2 older kids. I have used the huggies and all my kids got a rash from it. So once again it is up to how much you want to spend and for status issues. Good LUCK and congrats on the new baby.

hi valerie, congratulations,

I am a mother of a three month old and I used huggies and pampers. I like the pampers better now that she is a little older only because she has gotte so chubby and the huggies are more bulky but both are great. for bath time the giggle and grins are great and so is baby magic bath. baby magic lotion is the only lotion I use because it softens as well as smells wonderful. I also used it on my older children who are 18 and 16 when they were babies. for diaper cream I received as a gift at my baby shower, Arbonne Baby Care herbal diaper rash cream. It is excellent. My daughter had a stomach bug and had some diaper rash from going to the bathroom so much. I applied the arbonne everytime I changed her and the diaper rash was gone in one day. It was amazing. I never seen anything work so fast and I told you I have two other children that I raised and I had trouble with my son being allergic to luvs diapers when he was first born and he had a very bad diaper rash from them. This Arbonne is truly amazing. It sells for about $12.75 a tube and the tube I have has lasted me three months. I use it everyday and am just about out of it and just have reordered it. Their website is www.arbonne.com or their number to call is 1-800-ARBONNE. I hope this information is helpful to you and wish all the best to you and your family.

Hi Valerie-
My daughter is now 6 yrs old. I tried every type of diaper when she was born; the only one that didn't leak no matter how inexpensive or expensive I bought was LUVS. Also, good ol' Johnson n' Johnson baby shampoo is the best for hair and body. As far as diaper rash ointment or powder, buy desitin and regular ol' baby powder, but don't over do it. Babies need to have as much air down there as possible. If you use too much powder or diaper rash ointment, it will dry out their skin and that is not good either. Hope this helps.

Hi there!!

Congratulations on becoming a first time Mom!!! I think the best thing you can do is trial and error, a diaper and/or product that works for me, may not work for your baby. I think for a newborn, Johnsons baby products work very well, they are gentle, but get the job done. Don't get baby wipes that are scented, that can irritate their new skin.. get unscented w/ aloe. Don't use baby powder. If you have a boy, be sure to have vaseline on hand, if he was circumsized. I was told you could use A & D ointment on him too - but check with your pediatrician - my son was born six years ago, so that may have changed. Have alcohol wipes on hand, or rubbing alcohol with some cotton swabs and Qtips for their belly button. Make sure you keep it clean, I was so scared I was gonna hurt them while cleaning their belly buttons, but unless ya pull or yank, it's NOT gonna hurt them at all... you can push it to the sides, to get all the goop, as long your careful, you won't hurt it. As for diapers... get newborn and size one - you just dont know how big their gonna be, and different brands run differently in sizes. Huggies worked great for my son, I don't like them for my daughters, luvs worked good on one daughter, not on the other... buy little packages of different ones, till you find one that fits your little one best. The swadlers and cruisers (when they get bigger) were my favorites. Remember not to give them a full bath until their belly button is healed. Give them lots of love, and you can't go wrong. If you have any other questions, feel free to email me directly at ____@____.com once again, congratulations! Let us know when the new baby arrives!!!!

when choosing any baby bath products make sure yo upick the ones that done have alot of perfumes and such. you dont want anything that will irritate the babys skin.. as far as diaper change products you can find somethign that works best for you. desitin seems to work well for most babys, a and d ointment does too but it smells horrible. I always used pure lanolin which is used in breastfeeding but is also FABULOUS for rashes and any chapped skin it is very thick so it stays on the skin and protects it. Diapers themselves, huggies and pampers seem to work the most often for most parents. but you can try one and see how it works for your baby. sometimes one or the other will have a reaction to the babys skin. so if they get recurrent rashes, switch diapers and go from there. you wont know any of that till the baby is born.

I love the bather that I use. You can find it by going to babysrus.com. It is also available in the toysrus stores. It is the Mothers tough baby bather. It is made of a mesh material, so it dries really quickly and I have never had a problem with mold. My sister-in-law went through 3 different ones until she finially tried this one and she loved it. We started using ours from day 1. At first it is a little tricky especially if you don't have help. When our daughter was days and weeks old I would get into the tub and just kinda crouch down and hold her while my husband would bath her. Mostly because they are kinda floppy at first. She is now 6 months old and I am still using it. She will be graduating to a different kind of seat bather. I have one that attaches to the side of the tub. Waiting until she can sit up a little better though. As far as a diaper pail. I recommend the diaper champ. For the simple fact that you can use any kind of plastic bag and don't have to keep buying the bags that are needed for some of the other pails. I use plastic shopping bags: Publix, Wal-Mart, etc. This can also be viewed on the babiesrus web site and it offers some tips on how to keep it smelling fresh. I use an odor eliminator air freshner that i just set down inside of it but i think i saw where other moms used baking soda (which i may try as well). Hope this helps. Congrats and good luck. I'm a 35 yr. old first time mom. My little girl is the light of my life. It took us 5 years to finially get pregnant but i would have waited 15 years to get her!!!

Lotions: I love the baby eveeno products. I use the one with the purple cap. I smells wonderful and my babys skin is so soft. Not to mention my hands now as well. I rub it on her every night after her bath.

Diapers: I started off using Huggies. I liked the way they fit my baby better than Pampers. But as you will discovery, every baby is different. I had some newborn size as well as 1's all ready for when we came home. Well my daughter was born 8lbs. 13 oz. so needless to say the newborn size pack did not used very much. I now buy white cloud brand diapers at Wal-Mart. They have never leaked and find them to not be as bulky as some of the others. Right now she is using a 3. But I can buy an 80 pack for around $12.00 or $13.00. I have also used Swaddle brand from Winn-Dixie in a pinch and they worked great too.

Not sure if you are breast or bottle feeding?? But when I switched to bottle I had to go with Soy because she seemed to spit up alot on the milk based. But at first I was buying Enfamil which runs about $24.99 a can and now I have been using the Winn-Dixie Swaddles brand. It costs $14.99 a can. I also used the Kmart brand for awhile but I live closer to a Winn-Dixie so it became a matter of convenience. She has had no problems what so ever with it. You will find that alot of the generic brands have almost exactly the same ingredients as the others. It's just a matter of what works for you. I know this is kind of lengthy, but I know how I felt waiting for my baby and didn't have a clue as to what to do or use. I hope all this helps.

Congrats on your first. I am 37 and had my first last year! I have used many different types of diapers. My advice is to register with different online websites (Pampers, Huggies); you'll get free samples and coupons. Publix, Winn-Dixie also have Baby Clubs to join. (They'll send coupons, too. Winn-Dixie sends some for $10 off a grocery bill!) I love getting good bargains when I can. It comes in handy later on for baby food, too.
I agree with the advice to save the receipt, although I haven't had a problem exchanging an unopened bag/box of diapers without one. I buy diapers from Costco in bulk and have found that my DD outgrows them. (I bought two boxes of Huggies size 1/2 200 diapers before she was born! BTW They are only size 1 -- don't be fooled like I was)
I could see how buying only Pampers from the start could quickly add up points for rewards. It's a good plan, however I didn't like the tape tabs (Pampers, except on Newborn size), I preferred velcro (Huggies). I didn't want to tape my little one's skin by mistake during one of my late night blurry eyed feeding sessions!
I love the baby Aveeno products!! My pediatrician said to stay away from Johnson and Johnson products because of all the additives. They're really not the gentlest products out there.
I noticed another post mentioned baby powder... current thinking is that it can be inhaled by the baby and is not good for their lungs. It's best to stay away from it.
It's amazing how having a child changes your life... enjoy every minute of it.
Best wishes,
T.

Burt's Bees, California Baby, Aubrey Organics, Weleda - all the best.

The conventional stuff you find in the store is AWFUL - full of harmful ingredients that should never touch your skin.

i like huggies brand diapers and i use either johnson and johnson baby soap or gerber baby soap. it all depends on your baby for soap and occas with diapers. try one brand of each and see how your baby does. some infants have skin allergies to soaps or diapers. or you could even buy different brands of diapers and see which you like best, i have friends that hate huggies, but i love them.
