My recommendation is to feed your baby what you eat. blend it before you add any salts or sugars and give him that. It wont hurt them and you have to remember in about 4 months he will be eating it anyway.
Help!! I have searched many web sites, and cant find an answer. My son is 8 months old and does not like any baby food, except bananas. He likes to taste our food and seems to really like it, but I'm afraid to give him our food. I'm worried about artificial ingredients, and additives. Just what is appropriate to feed my son? My pediatrician was fairly vague about the hows and whens. So, the next logical source of information is other moms. Please, any advice is good advice!

It is perfectly ok to give him your food, just tailor it to him a bit (watch loading up on spices, salts, and sugars, and blend it if nothing else).
And it sounds as if he's not digging the texture - our daughter didn't. Not saying she had/has a texture "problem", she just doesn't really like slimy, mushy, stringy stuff - even now. And I never took to baby food as a kid either. IN FACT! He might like your food because it ISN'T bland - our 2 year old eats right along with my husband's buffalo chicken obsession, and I'm chugging milk and eating bread in the corner because I can't stand the heat.
As far as artificial additives and ingredients are concerned - try to get fresh fruit and veggies, if possible, and wash them off well (most have a wax put on at the store to look "better") - though just water will do, no need for soap. If you have access to FRESH fruit/veggies (i.e. out of a trusted garden), then a simple wash-off will be all you need. Then cut them up and start at the smallest texture and work your way up to one he can *safely* eat (chunks shouldn't be much bigger than his pinky-finger-diameter!) If you're adding bread products, try toast. Add a little peanut butter for protein or a *small* amount of jam for taste. This is the time you can try and con them into anything (even hummus!), so watch for dislikes and allergies, and feel free to experiment!

Hi Sara! You just missed my Make Your Own Baby Food at http://www.bodymindandspiritabq.com.
As another poster said, if you are nursing, your baby is fine. Babies still get most of their nourishment and nutrition from formula or mama's milk for their first year.
What is appropriate to feed your son will depend on you and your thoughts on food and nutrition. You can feed him much of what you eat or parts of it. You are right, though, that if your diet is full of artificial colors, additives and other ingredients, it won't be the best choice. Many parents use feeding their babies as a way to consider their own food choices and habits. You deserve better ingredients, too!
If you are interested in making your son's food, it is not hard. I recommend something called the Fresh Baby Kit to help get you started. Good luck!
Hi Sara. Don't be afraid to give him your food. If he likes it and will eat it, then that is wonderful! The more he'll eat now, the better. It's great to get him to try many different foods, that way he'll hopefully learn to like more types of foods and get used to new textures.
Also, he's only 8 months old, so I wouldn't be too concerned yet that he's only liking banana baby food! As long as you're still breastfeeding, he's still getting the nutrition he needs. I would start to worry if he was a year old and still not liking other types of food. Good luck!

My daughter was the same way, she is 11 months now. It was just a faze and usually is for most babies. I still have a hard time feeding her certain foods, I now feed her mostly adult foods, but I try to keep it healthy. I haven't given up on feeding her baby food and I won't. Always, always, always keep trying and never give up. Babies change so often, one month he may not eat, the next month he may not be able to get enough, so keep trying no matter what. Keep in mind that even if artificial flavors slip in there, that NO baby has ever died from it and its ok!! I'm the same way, I try to feed her healthy, but in todays world, its hard to get healthy food FAST!
If he is eating your food, FEED IT to him........my baby was so stubborn about eating food, but she got better once she could feed herself. She was much more comfortable feeding herself then me feeding her. Now she does both!
I don't know if I've helped, but I hope so!
Good luck and take care!
I would suggest to make his food. I did this, almost exclusively, with both of my sons. I have a mini food processor which I used all the time. There are so many different things you can make which are very easy. You can cook almost any vegetable and mix it w/formula or breast milk to get the consistency you want. I would start off with something like apples, carrots, potatoes, peas, green beans, etc. (One at a time, because you do need to check for allergy) If he takes cereal, you can also start by mixing these things with his baby cereal. Then you can move on to things like rice, noodles, beans, etc. when he is ready for something a little more. I even gave them chicken, turkey and ham. The great thing about making his food is that you have complete control over what goes into it and you can change the consistency when he is ready for something a little more. By the time my boys were one, they were usually eating what we were for dinner, even if I had to "process" it for them. If your son is interested and likes "table" food, let him try what he can. I hope this helps. I can give you more specific info and ideas if you want it. You can email me at ____@____.com luck!!!
Hi Sara,
My son didn't like any of the baby foods either. I just fed him the bananas and tried other stuff like mashed potatoes. Nothing really did it for him. He just nursed, mostly, until he was well over a year old. Now he's 2 1/2 and I still have trouble getting him to eat. I watch other kids of the same age eat and eat and wonder why he won't. But he's not undernourished or skinny. I guess he just doesn't have a very big appetite. Go figure, but I dont' think you should worry too much. He's not going to starve or anything. Some people I know just took their grown up food and put in a food processor and gave it to baby that way.
As far as the hair salon goes, I know a great one. It's pretty new. It's called "Glow salon & spa" and it's located at 901 Rio Grande Blvd. NW Suite G158A, ABQ, NM 87104. The number is ###-###-####. All of the stylist are good but if you can, get an appointment with Davida. She's great and a really nice person.
