My son is 9 months old and we recently tried starting table food with him but he tried it and then started gagging until he threw up. We talked to the doctor and she said he wasn't ready for chunky food yet just keep him on stage 2 and try chunky food once a week. Anyway now he is fighting me almost every time I try and feed him his stage 2 foods. I have to let him get really hungry before he will eat and even then its a struggle cause by that point he is so grumpy he is throwing a fit!! I'm a first time mom and kind of lost on what to try at this point... Any advice would be great : )

What can I do next?

My daughter HATED baby food. She only ate it for a matter of weeks. She nursed and ate what we were eating, as long as it was appropriate for her. I looked at it as easier for me and a huge savings since I didn't have to buy baby food.

This might be overkill but, if you're seriously concerned, you could see a pediatric GI for a swallow test to see if it's mechanical.

Otherwise, stick with what he can handle for now and just gradually increase the texture.

As hard as it is to do, don't worry about it and don't push it. Just back off for a while and try again later. My son didn't eat ANY solid food until about his first birthday. We tried and he'd gag and throw it up. We'd wait a couple weeks and try again. The doctor told me not to worry, his weight was fine, just make it available. If he eats it fine, if he doesn't, fine too. We took the doctors advice and then right at his first birthday he started eating yogurt and graham crackers. A couple months later and he was eating everything under the sun. Just listen to your doctor - don't worry until she expresses concern.

You could feed him applesauce, mashed potatoes, carrots cooked to where they're really soft. Soft foods in general. Or just keep making him eat the baby food. There's no really good advice for this situation. Do you mix baby cereal in with the baby food? Adding/omitting might help him want to eat.

baby food is gross. try real food that's mushy and see if that makes a differance. if it's not the taste, go back to the dr.
