Baby Fights Bottle Feedings

My son is 12 weeks old. I am nursing and formula feeding him. He has started to fight the bottles whether they have formula or breastmilk in them. I have recently returned to work and this makes it so much harder to go every day knowing he isn't eating much because it is from a bottle. If any one has any advice to help him (and me) get through this I would be very grateful! Thank you.

What can I do next?

Try having a man give the bottle. He could also be cutting teeth. Sometimes an ear infection will accompany the new teeth, making it uncomfortabe to suck.

Hi K. Have you tried the Playtex nurser bottle? The nipple more closely resembles mommy's breast. The switch worked for me when I encountered the same problem. Good luck!

I would try using the Dr. Brown's bottles. This was the only bottle my daughter would take once I returned to work. They are lots of parts but it was the only bottle that worked in the begining when I wasn't nursing. Hope this helps.

The only bottle that my son would take was "Breastflow" and you can get them at Babys r us. They are very expensive, but have double nipples that simulate let down. He did great on them and it was a God send. He was 7 months old before I found something that worked. Might be worth a try.

Hi K.,

You might want to go purchase nipples just like you've been using in the past for your son, but ones meant for an older baby. They need more volume per suck once they reach 3-4 months of age. The same thing happened with my grandson. I went to the store panicking, because I couldn't get him to take his bottle (it had breastmilk in it). It had been progressively getting worse. As soon as I picked those up that day he was his old happy little self. Hope it helps, S.

my baby ate less than 3 oz a day for a week when I went back to work. he did clusterfeed though - he began waking at night to feed - I loved it!! they are so smart that he could figure to eat at night instead of day to get mommy!!
anyway we have a nanny (first three weeks were daycare and didnt go well for me!) so now he is 10 months and has done just fine he only ever got up to 6-8 oz a day without me though - I always do breast in the AM and when I get home plus before bed - so he drinks still at night whenever he feels like it :) and of course ALL the time on the weekends :)

It might be the bottle. With my daughter, I think I tried about 10 or 12 different bottles before we ended up with the Dr. Brown's Bottles. I don't know if they make a Bisphenol-A free version now, but you might want to check. You could also check the One Step Ahead catalog (or online), they have some pretty ingeneous products for the babies.

I breastfed 3 babies before now, and my little Fiona is exclusively breastfed at 7mo, but until I frequented an extremely pro-breastfeeding board (read breastfeeding "nazis" as mainstream mamas would say) this past year, I didn't know that your baby can clusterfeed when you are home and not eat much when you're at work, and he should be just fine. My Fiona will NOT take a bottle at all. I started back to work when she was 5mo, so she was a little bigger, and I am able to nurse on my lunch hour, but it's still worrisome to think she isn't eating while I"m gone. I was very worried about it until I read some other mamas' stories about how they could go all day and their babies still were gaining weight, having plenty of wet diapers, etc. The only thing is -- she does nurse a LOT more at night which makes for not-so-great sleep for mama. But we cosleep so it's not too bad and I figure it's a stage she'll grow out of soon enough. She's almost ready for solids, and that will help a lot too. If your LO is taking a bottle at all, he'll be fine! Just watch the diapers and his weight.

I know you probably have considered this, but how necessary is it for you to return to work at this point? Or could you reduce the amount of time you are gone? Could someone bring him to your job so you could nurse him there? He clearly wants you!

First, I'll say you're not alone! I have been through this with atleast one of my kids (I have four) and I know SO many women who have been through this as well. Hang in there and try not to worry. Babies are tougher than we think. Keep doing what you're doing and when he gets hungry enough he WILL eat better from the bottle. Check with your doctor, too. When our first was about three months old we switched to a pediatrician for him. We have been there ever since. They have given us such great help and advice along the way!
