I am moving my 3yr old sons room upstairs into the loft - the top of the stairs has no door. Putting a door in isn't an option as one of the walls in only a half wall. I need to find a gate that my son CAN easily open without pinching his fingers. I can't have him up there with no door and i can't lock him in either. Any advice will be appreciated! Thanks C.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the responses! First I just want to respond to someones concern about my son being in a room with a half wall. We are taking all precautions when it comes to the wall...His desk and pretty much any thing that can move and can be climbed on will not be in his room - that will all be in his playroom, and anything that he could use to climb that has to be in is room (bed...etc) is on the complete opposite side on the room and too heavy to move. I appreciate your concern. And I think I am going to go with the "cutting a door in half" advice...I was thinking I wanted to do that and I'm glad to hear someone else has!! if you have any advice/tricks that could help me do it I'd REALLY appreciate it! Thanks again everyone!

Why do you want a gate,if he is able to open it? How about making a wooden half door? My sister in law did that at the top of their stairs leading to the basement. You can put any type of closure on it you like, perhaps even a door knob.It would be much more secure than a gate at the top of the stairs, and easy for him to open.

Hi, I saw a gate on the BBRUS website (& I think in the store too) with a handle at the top. I imagine that would be pretty easy to open. I didn't pay much attention to it b/c I wanted gates my son couldn't open. Sorry I'm not much help. Good luck.

Do you think it is wise to put a 3-year-old in a room with a half wall? My first thought is this kid is going to climb up on the wall and fall right over. I would never do that!

Is it the stairs you are worried about maybe? Can you put a gate at the top of the stairs or is that the opening to the loft?

We had an opening that had a half wall too. We boought a full sized door, cut it in half and then put a piece of wood on the top and it is beautiful. I am not sure if this kind of thing is what you can use. Good luck.
