Take him to the Doctor ASAP. This is not normal.
His tushy sounds swollen or something, since it is bigger than the other side.
Don't waste time. Take him to the doctor now. Something is wrong. Don't 'guess' at it.
Take care,
Susan
Hi Moms,
My son is just starting to learn how to walk. He has been walking now for about 2 weeks or so. No more crawling for him.. I notice that when I pick him up he almost starts crying and looks like he is in discomfort. His left bottom cheek is not bruised but it larger then the right side and when I change his diaper or touch that side he flinches. I did also notice that if he falls on his left side he gets up really fast and a tear comes down his face. Not sure if this is normal and when he starts walking really well and not falling every 10 steps that this would go away.
Any advise would help this first time mommy!
Ok Moms,
Thank you for your advise, I did take my little man to the ER, they had an ultra sound found a Perirectal Abscess. Which then he was omitted to the hosptial and went into sugery that night to remove the Abscess. We are still at the hosptial 5 days trying to figure out what is still going on with him. I hope to bring him home really soon.
Thanks Mom for all your advise!

I'd get him to the doctor. There could be something wrong. One cheek should'nt be bigger then the other and he sould'nt be in that much pain from it. Plesase take him to the doctor.
I would definetly call the doctor and have them take a look. I have not heard of this happening before. I hope he feels better soon!
J.,
Your son is still mastering walking, and falling is very normal...however, the bruising and flinching is concerning.
My son had calcification of the hip joints due to breech birth and this made walking uncomfortable for him. I only found out he was in pain when I took him to his Pedi to get him checked. In my opinion, a trip to the doctor's may be in order, especially if you little guy is tearing up when he falls.
I hope this turns out to be nothing!
Good Luck and much love your way.
Deanna Miller.
I agree with the other mom's- I would get it checked out by the pediatrician. My daughter fell all the time when learning how to walk, but it never made her bottom tender. There may be something else going on there.
Oh my - a tear? So sad! This did not happen to my son, and I haven't heard this happening to any of my friends, but I guess you should see what other moms say. Maybe also call your pedi and ask them. I was always concerned with wrist/arm soreness with falling, but not the bum, it's cushy!
I have to agree with the other mamas. get it checked out - Better safe than sorry! I've never heard of this happening to any kids I know so it certainly isn't common...
J., this is absolutely not normal. PLEASE, PLEASE consult with a physician to be sure that everything is okay with your son. Its better to be safe!
I'll add my 2 cents and agree with the other Moms. What's happening isn't normal. Please take him to the doctor right away. I hope it's nothing serious, poor little guy! Sending good wishes and prayers your way.
Hi J., your son should be checked out by a doctor. If he has swelling and is sore to the touch then there is more than just a normal "owy". Check to see if it is hot to the touch, this may indicate an infection, possibly a boil. Have it looked at.
there may be something more going on. my daughtr never acted like that when she started walking. i agree with S H take him to the dr asap.
I would go to Urgent care personally. There is usually one open on a Saturday. If your baby is in that much pain, something is wrong. Don't wait!
You might want to take him to a pediatric chiropractor. Very frequently, the SI joints (sacroliliac joints) do not move properly after repetitive falls and one sign of that is more tissue on one side. I was adjusted at 2 days old and my kids have all been adjusted throughout their lives - ages 6, 2 and 9 months.
Many pediatricians would discourage you from seeing a chiropractor, based on lack of education regarding chiropractic, yet others would encourage you. Their area of expertise is not joint mobilization, but rather pharmacology, etc. I know Dr. Bob Sears refers to a chiropractor for some of his pediatric patients.
You can find a local pediatric chiropractor here:
J., I would not mess with this and would have it checked by his pediatrician immediately. Likely it is nothing, but better safe than sorry. Swelling and pain should be checked out, especially since there is no visible bruise.
Definitely not normal, take him to Urgent Care today! Sounds like an infection. Don't wait until Monday.
Although it is not uncommon for babies to fall more on one side of the buttocks more on the other during the learning to walk process, it should not be tender to slight touch. My 25 month old daughter fell more on one side than the other but just for reasurrence you should bring this up to the pediatrician for examination just to rule out any internal injury whether tailbone, hip etc. Kids can heal very quickly and sometimes one does not even know of an injury unless the child complaints. Clearly your child is letting you know something is wrong either it be something serious or just a little "owie". Happy walking to your little one.

This may sound dumb, but it could be his little hip. I know my butt hurts on the side that I had hop problems.
But whatever you do, you need to take him to the doc.
Hi J.. Babies bottoms are pretty resilient to falling on. There is so much cushion there that falling shouldn't really hurt. I would take him in and have him checked out. Especially if he is in so much pain. At least for peace of mind. Good luck and God bless.
I agree with the other mamas too...contact your pedi today. Hopefully yours has Saturday appts. or after hours support. If not, go to the Urgent Care. If you're in the south bay area, Ocean Medical in Redondo Beach is good. They are open all day Saturday and part of the day on Sunday. Hopefully this is nothing serious, but it's best to be safe than sorry. Best wishes.
J.,
I agree with the advice that you should urgently take your baby to the doctor asap...hopefully Monday!!! They may perform xrays to see what is going on. One concern I had in reading your question...is there anyone watching your baby other than you when you are not present? Is it possible that if there is another person involved that something is happening that you are not aware of, in terms of the cause of this injury? Consider all possibillities but please get to the doctor right away.
I would take him to the doctor. I was a teacher (infant & toddler) and I have watched many children learn to walk and this does not sound right. What concerns me is the swelling in one cheek and the tear in his eye if he falls on that side. Better to be safe and get it checked out.
Take him to the doctor. That does not sound right.
It could be, but you probably should have it checked out. Never hurts to be safe.
i would take him to the doctor asap. the fact that it is noticeably lareger than the other cheek with no outward sign of injury could signal infection or a partial dislocation, especially if he cries if you just pick him up. babies tend to get hurt from seemingly nothing because they are so loose in the joints still. my daughter had dislocated her elbow partially at about the same age and the only clue i had was intermittent crying with touch to the elbow. other than that, no bruising, marks, just slight swelling at the elbow joint that i had attributed to a fall earlier that week. better to be safe than sorry.
