ok, so i had a planned c-secion with my little girl. she was born 8pounds 7.9ounces on november 16. she had some problems keeping her oxygen levels up and was kept away for the first 48 hrs of her life. they brought me in to (breast) feed her, and to let us spend time with her. lactation specialist said everything was going great, she has a good latch and that my milk seemed to be coming in fine. well when we left hospital baby weighed 7lbs 12oz they said it was normal for her to loose weight and not to worry. took her to get her weight checked 3 days later she was down to 7.6 they asked me to come back in 24hrs. she weighed 7 lbs 5.9oz. she seems satisfied when she eats she doesnt cry and seems very content. she always gos to sleep after she eats, i try to wake her and offer her more and she usually will not accept my breast and close her mouth. i can express milk before and after the feedings. i dont know if shes just being a lazy eater, or whats going on. i felt so bad (been cryn off and on) about "starving" her that i offered her a bottle of enfamil premium newborn and she ate less than half an ounce. i dont know whats going on. with my son i wasnt producing enough and he cried constantly, was never content, and shes acting nothing like he did. i just dont understand...im tired of crying over this. i dont know if my breast milk is missing a vital nutrient that she needs or??? any advice would be greatly appreciated moms. i started taking my prenatals again with an iron supplement and fenugreek last night after heer weight check and i have realized that my cut from my csection is infected. it smells horribly and theres a bad rash that extends down into my pubic are and my inner thighs (calling dr tomorrow morning) dont know if that could be something affecting my milk? any help is appreciated! thanks in advance ladies

My pediatrician wanted my babies back to their birth weight by 10 days to 2 weeks old. My kids all lost a pound right away, but gained it back by 10 days and then went on to nurse for over a year.

Right now your daughter is less than a week old. You are doing great. For me, being engorged and having more milk than my babies needed the first few weeks was normal. I was always able to express more than they could eat the first few weeks. Keep nursing on demand (every two hours or more if she wants too) and taking your vitamins.

Don't offer her the formula if she is nursing regularly (every few hours) and has wet diapers (8-10 per day).

If you are worried about her consumption, ask for a weight check at the doc's office. With my third they had me come in, weighed her (naked) then I nursed her and they weighed her again to get an accurate idea of how much she was eating (in oz.). It was reassuring, and I can imagine for a first time nurser that would be very nice information to have.

You are doing great. Go to the doc. about your infection, and get antibiotics, but make sure you tell them you are nursing.

What BeckyW said.

Also, is baby having wet/dirty diapers? I forget how many is normal for a newborn, per day; someone else can post that! or ask the La Leche League leader, they are wonderful! If baby is having enough wet/dirty diapers, and seems alert etc when she is awake, she's probably fine.

She is a different little person than your son. I am sure your milk is fine, and it is
great that you are nursing her! I don't think you are starving her, if she were hungry after nursing she would have gobbled down that formula.

Do tell your doc (when you call about the rash) that you are breastfeeding and want to continue.
this will influence the antibiotic prescribed for you , if you need one.

Also be aware that your hormones are still out of whack, that's partly why you are crying.

Take a deep breath and hang in there! Congrats on your baby, and enjoy your little ones!

Definitely relax - it's doing neither of you any good for you to be stresed out. If she's content after a feeding and is wetting 8+ diapers a day then the issue (if there is one) is not with your milk supply. You can check in with a lactation consultant to see if she has any insight. But the best thing I can say is to keep checking with your doctor and keep tabs on her weight - it will take more than 24 hours for her to start gaining.

First off mama, RELAX! Stressing out will not help you or your baby out any. Secondly, CALL A LACTATION SPECIALIST! An IBCLC, La Leche League, someone who can help you. As long as you are nursing her one side only until she's satisfied you are doing fine. If it continues then the doctor should explore other options in her health.
