The explanation is lengthy, but bottom line...do you think we can use the nickname Allie with the full name Angelina? OR is it too much of a stretch?

What can I do next?

I don't see why not. If they can somehow pull Peggie from Margaret, or Jackie from Jonathon, then Allie from Angelina works just fine.

OMG, BP, I didn't even read the answers! Sorry for stealing exactly what you said!!!

It doesn't really make sense to me but calling someone Peggy for Margaret, Jack for John, Dick for Richard, ect...none of these make sense either so go for it if that is what you please.

My name is Jenna, and my nickname is Jayo. My daughter's name is Piper but we all call her Bub. You have the authority and right to call your child Rumplestiltskin if you so please. I don't think there is too much of a stretch when it comes to nicknames. You may be surprised what you actually end up using for a nickname!

Kind of a stretch. You'll be having to explain it all the time.

I don't think it's a stretch. It's a nickname. Not her real name. One of my sons somehow ended up with a nickname. His name is James. But somewhere along the line everyone began calling him Porky! I don't even know how it happened.

On the other hand, I loved the name Cindy when I was growing up, so when my first daughter was born I named her Cindy. Not Cynthia. I didn't like the name Cynthia. If you like the name Allie, why not just name her Allie?

Either way, no matter what her name is you can nickname her anything you want. And don't be surprised if other people call her by a different nickname.

i agree that you can call her whatever you want to, but there probably will be confusion as to what her name really is.

You can nickname your kid whatever you want.
I know a kid whose nickname is Bing. It has nothing to do with is perfectly normal given name.

I don't think there are any rules when it comes to this.

Just my opinion.

You can do whatever you want, but I would be prepared for people to assume that if her nickname is Allie that her full name is Allison, Alice, etc. And if her full name is Angelina, they may automatically call her Angie. So there may be a lot of correcting on your part (and her part as she gets older).

It's a bit of a stretch, but no any different than people who have a nickname that is nothing like their name.

I would not do that...it is really a stretch. Unless you never from day one call her Angelina and vigilantly correct others. But she will still be faced with not being identified correctly by teachers and others who are given her full name.

My nickname is A., but its short for Allyson. My really good friend's name is Angeline which I love, and I call her by her full name because its so beautiful to hear. Other people call her Angel which is also beautiful. If I had to choose between Allie and Angel I think I would definitely prefer Angel. (I guess I sorta wish it were my nickname) Your daughter may also prefer it, after all, isn't every little girl an angel? It would be even more special to have it as part of your name.

Sure why not! I think of angie when I think of the nickname for angelina but allie works. Then again my name is H. and I've been called spidermonkey my whole life!

Do whatever you like. But be aware that many people will think Allie is from Allison or Alexandra, and will probably substitute Angle (especially with Angelina Jolie in the news every other day). You may spend some time correcting people through the years, so figure out how important this is to you. If it's important to stick to the name, go for it.

It is a stretch but no more so than Bill as a nickname for William or Bob as a nickname for Robert. Do what you want. Angelina is a pretty name, BTW.

I don't see an issue with it... One of my friends growing up went by 'Nikkie', but her name is Helen. (Her middle name was Suzanne, so we have NO CLUE where nikkie came from! lol.) At least yours starts the same!

I don't think it makes sense personally. There are a few names Allie/ali/ally/aly can go with..Allison/Alison/Alyson/Allyson, Alice, Alexandra, alexandria, alessandra, allegra, alana, Alaina, alexa, Alix, alena, alyse, Alicia, alita, Aliyah, alora. Other nicknames for Angelina can be Gigi, Lina, Ana, Annie, Anna. Congrats!

I think it is too much of a stretch. Allie works as a the full name or a shorten version of Allison.
