My daughter, 7months, is extremely bright. She is above the learning curve in every area except her speech. She has been sitting up on her own since she was 3 months and was pulling up since 5 months. But when is comes to speech - NOTHING! She doesn't even babble. She doesn't "oooohhhh" or "aaaahhhh". She hasn't added the "d" or "b" that most babies have by this age. But she does grunt. I know she can hear cause she responses to noises or calling her name by turning her head and if you say something she likes she smiles. I was thinking shes just slower in developing her speech because she is so advance in her motor skills. Help!!!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I saw the pediatrician yesterday. He has ordered some hearing test. After we see the results of the test we will determine whether she has a hearing loss (cause she can here maybe its muffled) or as the doctor said "has nothing to say" right now. So we will see . . . .

I can understand what you are going through. My daughter also has speech delays. You need to talk to her pediatrician and tell them that you want to see about getting her into speech therapy. The sooner you start this process the better cause it can take so long to get into a therapy program, it took us a year from the time she was first evaluted. And really one of the big things I have learned in the last four years with my daughter is they work on their own time table all of those chart and things that doctors have to evaulate our kids are good as an average but every kid goes at their own pace and when she decides she wants to talk she will, but I would definatley talk to her peditrician. Feel free to contact me if you would like to talk anymore. I am also a military wife.

Hi C.,

Depending on what city you live in, cities have places where you can have your baby tested for delays. In this way you won't have to worry.

Check the web for "Infant and Toddler Connection"

Hope this helps. Good luck. D.

Hi Camryn,
My daughter did not say anything until she was about 18 months old and then it wasn't much just sounds, but after she turned 2 she just started talking and was using complete sentences within a few months. I did talk with my peditracian about it because I was concerned, but 7 months seems really young to be worried. However, I would recommend you speak with your peditracian and if there is a question of hearing the Portsmouth Navy Hospital did an excellant job testing my son for hearing problems. My daughter was also walking by 9 months. The peditracian told me that some kids develop speech early and some motor skills early. I know its hard not to compare, but just to set your mind at ease I would talk with the doctor.
Hope this helps,
P.

I have seem this before. And the opposite!
Developmentally some develop physically greatly, and the speech comes later, others speak first and not walk till after 17 months as with my friend!
That's all I know!!
You might want to try sign language! This takes out any frustration. http://www.signingbaby.com/main/

I will pray, I think all is fine!!
God Bless you!

I don't know where you live but every state has some sort or Early Intervention Program. They can test her and provide services if she is speech delayed.
