Baby Teething?

I have an 8 month old who I think may be getting her first tooth. She normally sleeps 12 plus hours a night. This last week she's been getting up 4X a night crying. I've giving her a pacifer which she just spits out and tried teething tablets. The only thing that seems to soothe her is a bottle of warm water. However, she still wakes up every few hours. Do you think it's a first tooth coming in? I haven't seen anything yet and if it is a tooth, any other suggestions on what I can do to help her sleep? She is happy during the day and still takes her 2 naps a day for and hour and a half each. I have two other children that get woken up by her during the night ( 4yrs. old today and a 2 yr. old). So once I get the baby back to sleep I have to get the others back to sleep. I feel like I'm only getting a couple of hours of sleep a night. Thanks for your help.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all for your advice. I didn't experience this with my other two girls (I guess I was lucky). I tried the infant motrin last night and it worked wonders. Infant tylenol for some reason didn't work at all. She slept all through the night again. Sure enough, this afternoon I saw a tiny tooth starting to pop through.

I have an 8m also, (may 7) she just got 2 teeth on bottom, same thing (have 3kids, 2 1/2, 8yr) Just as I got her to sleep through the night, those teeth came, ans now she has to be with me to sleep!
I don't think I would give her that much water though at pm, just make it milk. For us, when we got up, I would rub Ora gel
give teething tablets or Ibuprofen (is best for inflammation)
and breastfeed, she was back out in no time.
Just remember, this age will pass soon,....soon they wont want anything (but money) to do with us!....this is what I say to my self!
Good Luck!

It sounds like she is just teething. A dab of baby oragel should help her, along with the other great advice you recieved. It could also just be nightmares. I would gently stroke my son's head and he would go back to sleep. If that didn't work, I put him in bed with me, for about 30 minutes and then I took him back to his crib. The good thing is that this is just a temp situation. Also make sure she is eating a big dinner.

She may have an ear infection. Sometimes it is worse at night.

S., this most definitely sounds like teething to me. Both my son and daughter would have a great sleeping schedule and would mysteriously start waking up in the middle of the night. Then, within 3 weeks a tooth appeared. It would happen over and over (which is very annoying because it's so hard to get them back on schedule; once you do, another tooth ends up coming in). We are going through another round of teeth right now with our 16 month old. You might try giving her Motrin just before bed. I never found that my children got significant relief from teething tabs. Good luck.

She could be teething. But, she could also be going through a growth spurt and actually be hungry.

Tylenol works wonders and it might be a while before she actually gets a tooth in. Also maybe its an ear infection? Laying down tends to make it hurt worse so maybe that's why she is cranky during the night.

Have you tried rubbing teething gel on her gums? Maybe some motrin?
Also, if this doesn't work, she may have an ear infection. They hurt more when the child is laying down and also when they suck. So, may be why she acts in pain at night and won't take paci. Best wishes!!!

It could be teething but at 8 months it could also be other things on her mind. She may be starting to crawl or other wonderful baby tricks. If she's sleeping fine during the day then it might be separation anxiety at night. There are so many things it could be but the best suggestion I can give you is to watch her closely and just be patient. It's hard to give up the 12 hours of peace and quiet but it will return. If you want to try giving her some Tylenol before bed to see if it helps go ahead. I can't see what it would hurt but if it doesn't do anything than don't repeat it the next night.

Hope I've helped a little by suggesting some other things that could be bothering your little one.

Good luck,
Jen

Is she running a fever at all? Sometimes teething can come with a fever. I would give my kids motrin at bed time while teething and it helped get through the night. Your daughter is older than mine when they teethed, but they liked the vibrating teether you can get at Target or Walmart. Anyway, it does sound like teething to me. The first tooth is always the hardest (oh, and molars are tough too, but you wont have to worry about that for a while:))

It is always possible that she could be getting her first tooth. When my daughter got hers, the only way I could tell was at night. She acted completely normal during the day, but at night was waking up - a lot! You could try giving her a dose of infants' Motrin (lasts longer than Tylenol) and see if it changes anything.
Every baby is different, so she may be bothered more by her first tooth than your others were. (i.e. her tooth can't be seen yet, but she feels it)

Good luck!

Infant motrin is what my doctor always recommended at bedtime. I always liked to rule out an ear infection when mine were getting up at night like that too.

Motrin at night was the only thing that helped my son.
