Baby's First Food - Los Angeles,CA

Someone I know just gave their 6 mos old baby avocados. It's her first food. I would've started on something blander to get baby to eat a variety of foods. Just curious if others started on other foods besides the customary cereal.

What can I do next?

I think pear was the first fruit, yellow squash was the first veg.
www.wholesomebabyfood.com has a chart about what foods are good in what order (due to baby's growing system and possible allergens). I used that to help me make my decisions.

Our first foods were banana and avocado (not together, haha). Avocado is still my baby's favorite.

From wholesomebabyfood.com: Avocado makes a great first food for baby due to its texture and creaminess; an extra bonus is that avocado is full or "good" fats and has a high nutrient content!

After baby food, my friend feeds her baby tiny pieces of chicken or other meat. Sometimes she would feed her the rind of a grape, and she liked it. lol

A couple of years ago the list of top recommended first foods was avocado, banana, sweet potato, and rice cereal. I did banana and sweet potato first, but wish I had introduced avocado earlier. I never liked them, but now I absolutely love them.

Avocado's are a great first food! I figure that the babies have already tasted every thing anyways through breastmilk, so I didn't worry about the flavor being an issue. We started with poi (ground taro root) because it is a culturally important food here. My lil one loved it! Then we tried avocado and bananas and they were a hit too.

We started the baby cereal then did apples, carrots, pears, mangos, stuff like that. I know a girl that did avocado too... So weird! The cereal is just to get them used to chewing instead of sucking, actually. Not much nutrients in it, but I think it does help a bit.

Freshly mashed bananas and plain mashed potatoes were the firsts for my kiddos. Held off on the cereals for a little while (espically with my first) because of wheat gluten and other allergies in the family. Avocados aren't such a bad idea because of the good healthy oils and vitamins in it.

Avocado is sooooooo good for you, much better than anything with wheat in it. I feed my baby avocado everyday, mixing it in things and plain. Read up on all the health benefits, theres a lot!

My baby would not eat mushy food. She only wanted real food. So we gave her fresh, whole, organic avocado, bananas, watermelon, peaches... pretty much tried any and all fruits and vegetables. She is an amazing fruits and veggies eater now as an almost four-year-old.

avacado is a great first food. I don't do the cereals, as there is no reason to (just empty calories). I tried banana first, but baby didn't like it. Tried peas next, and he gobbles them up.

we gave my oldest baby carrots in the jar first, to this day he will eat carrots over anything else. we did the same with our 8 month old twins. one like the plain ol runny baby food and our other twin prefers table food. mashed potatoes, small bites of green beans, even whole peas...i think trying a variety of things is good, even those with lots of flavors. a nutrionist once told us that foods with lots of flavors are good because then it helps to expand their taste buds.

We did bananas with breast milk with my first and did avocados pretty early with my second...I am so glad she took to avocados...sooo easy and I felt good about the nutrients and such :). I had found a website about baby-led feeding back in the day and it helped me feel more confident about different foods at early ages. Super Baby food had a lot of good suggestions about foods to start the little one on at different ages which was VERY helpful even if I didn't do the whole plan. Neither of my girls ended up eating much cereal (although they did eat some). My first had no jar foods (by the time I tried them on a vacation she was too used to the fresh stuff! :) My second had more store food but mostly the pouches. This was never my intention, I just thought I would try doing fresh, and from home as much as I could and was gently surprised how easy it was...I guess there is enough marketing that I thought that was what babies were supposed to do...eat from a jar and a box. :)

The advice to give rice cereal is rapidly becoming obselete. It's basically processed junk-food. Not much of good, nutritional value in there.

We started our 8 month old on sweet potatoes. Some sources even recommend starting them on proteins. These are real, unprocessed foods, so the nutrients are easier for the baby to absorb. They're also free from additives (such as syntheticly produced iron) that can be so hard on a baby's digestive system and cause constipation and stomach upset.

If you're curious, you might want to do a quick google search on Baby Led Weaning. It might help you understand why some of us make the decisions we do about our babies' first foods.

Avocado's aren't bland?
It was my plan for avocado to be my son's first food (great brain food)...but he got a little banana first.
And hated avocado just as much as his sister did.
He does eat guacamole now...my kids hate bland. ;)
