I have heard hourly rate equates to their grade level i.e. $9/hour for 9th grader. I pay my 38 yr old sitter $15 (it's only 3 hrs/week). Might seem high for some parts of the country.
does anyone know what is the right amount to pay for a sitter for a few hours every once in a while? is the pay for a teen sitter different than for and adult one?
thanks
I received a number of answers, and they all agreed to + - $10.00 Thank you ladies, for your input, that was a big help....

The average is around $10/hr in my area.
My daughter has a few families that are regulars and they pay her about $80 for 6-8 hrs. That includes feeding children, getting them to bed, interacting with them, etc. NOT BEING ON HER PHONE
This past Sat she sat for 2 families at the same house, 6 children ages 10-4 and was paid $160 cash. Yes, she earned every penny.
If you go through a sitter service the sitter gets a portion of the money. Once you find someone good... HANG on and pay well.
My daughter did drop 1 family not just because of underpayment...but they were the lowest paying....each time she sat there (total of 3 times) she ended up at the Dr. with it costing at least 1 day of school, a Dr. visit and a round of Rx ($300 average). NOT worth it!!!
She said the house was messy and each time she was there she cleaned the kitchen so she'd have enough utensils for the 2 children. This house was in walking distance, although a bit far for my comfort with our wildlife, etc and by the time she texted me to tell me they were home, she was left to walk home alone. We are in a well above average neighborhood and we live on the higher end of the spectrum with many perks, wooded lots, etc.
Bottom line $10/hour is average CASH
It varies. In NY it's 12.50/hr for the teen and anywhere from 15-20/hr for an adult. It also depends on how many children you have and what needs to be done for them.
I have 2 sitters. I pay them $10/hour when it's a date night or something like that.
I pay them $50 per day if it's to cover a work day.
I pay them $25 for the 2 hours in the morning I need them.
So it really depends on what I need, and the fact that they will work with me on prices.
Around $8 to $10/hour for just a sitter.
i used to make 5 an hour......that was 20 years ago. i think the going rate is between 8-10 an hour. My 14 year old was paid 10 for babysitting my nephew
We pay my adult niece $10/hr. She is reliable, prompt, and has her own transportation. In fact, she was DD's first ever babysitter. I would pay a teenager less and I would pay any sitter more for a younger child (diapers, etc.).
