Bad Diaper Rash - Chicago,IL

I am the mother of three and my youngest is 16yrs old. I vividly remember having the same problem with my second child who is female. I found that her skin was much more sensitive than my firstborn son. First, I converted to (doubled) cloth diapers temporarily and once it cleared I had to change the brand of disposable diaper that I was using. She was having a reaction to the stuff that was in the diaper. maybe the organic type diapers they sell in stores like Whole Foods might be a good alternative until her bottom clears up. Hope this helps.

Let her have as much time with the diaper off as possible. Fresh air is the best way to heal a diaper rash. seriously.

The following worked on my dd's bad rash. 1 tube of Desitin, 1 tube of neosporin, a tablespoon of milk of magnesia. Mix it all together in a container and then use at diaper changes. It worked great for us. You can also try sprinkling with cornstarch and then put on desitin. If it's a yeast rash you need an antifungal. A yeast rash is bumpy where a non yeast is more peely and raw. I hope you can get it under control.

This sounds like a yeast infection. I always use an anti-fungal on rashes like that. If you have given her any high-allergy foods, refrain from giving her more (such as any kind of berry). Avoid giving her any high-acid foods such as juice. Let her crawl around without a diaper on. Those are all the suggestions I have! Good luck!

Oh your poor sweet baby! My son had similar issues with yeast infection diaper rashes. At every chance I would let his bottom air out, and when I did put a thick coat of lotrimin (anti-fungal for feet, yes; target's brand has the same ingredients & is half the price, buy three to have on hand, it goes quickly) and then a really thick coat of original desitin. My little dude never had open sores, so you may want to double check with the doctor before treating it this way in case it isn't yeast, but is something else. Good luck to you, it's so hard to see our babies in that kind of pain!

My son experienced this same issue! It is so scary and sad to see him in pain. I tried every diaper rash cream and all kinds of different diapers. It turned out they were allergic to his formula. There was no other symptoms so I didn't immediately realize this was an "allergy". I switched to Similac Sensitive formula and the rash disappeared the very next day. It was amazing. Good luck.

I have always used Target brand diaper rash cream (green top) along with Motrin for the pain. Works like a charm. My son still gets diaper rashes at 2 years old and although he may be in pain, the rash cream generally does the trick overnight.

I had the same problem with my neice. I watch her all day so I had to deal with it most of the time. Try keeping her diaper off as much as possible. I know it's hard, especially if she's crawling all over the place - but it helps so much! I would do 15 minutes if I just didn't have the time and we were out and about for the day. But if we were home all day, I would try to keep the diaper off all day. Also, do not use wipes to clean the bottom. Use a very soft rag rinsed in warm water. If you can't find a soft enough cloth, take a wipe and rinse it out and then use that.

this will sound crazy to some....but phillips milk of magnesia does the trick....it INSTANTLY takes the burn away and dries the rash up almost over night....you can either try and dab it on the babies bottom or just pour a little on but make sure you have a diaper or towel underneath....Hope this helps...I used it with my daughter when she had really bad rashes.

It sounds like a yeast infection rash (because of the open blisters), which my daughter had herself when she was a baby - the doctor recommended CLOTRIMAZOLE 1% (yes it can be bought over the counter and it is by the foot care isle) Apply it to the affected areas. In about 3 days it will start to disappear. Good luck. Make sure this is the only one you get - creams with other active ingredients are NOT meant for use in this area!!!!!!!!!!

Triple Paste is a good option too, but I've heard that Vusion is one of the best for serious rashes. What you need to do is stop using wipes, instead use a soft wet cloth. If you insist on wipes make sure they are fragrance free and alcohol free and be extremely gentle. My son got a horrible rash when he was only 2 weeks old and it was because of the wipes we were using. We also switched to Aquaphor cleansing soap since it is fragrance free as well and didn't burn his butt. Make sure before you put on any creams or ointments that the area is completely dry, otherwise you trap in moisture and that will prolong it. Air drying is best. It allows the skin to completely breath and it's cooling as well. My very first thought when I read your post was the diaper, but it's not. I don't know what wipes you use, but that was the culprit for our son's rash. See if your daughter will eat some mashed bananas... that should help with her stools. Don't feed her too much bananas though cause that can cause constipation.

Immediately go to the store and buy some lotrimin topical cream, it's made for athlete's foot. Be very careful not to get it inside her, but grease her up externally really well at ever diaper change. (My son had a diaper rash that lasted over a week and it probably was a yeast infection, but since athelet's foot is a type of yeast infection that medication worked almost immediately. It was completely gone with in 2 days (but his wasn't quite as bad as you are describing) Also I used the generic and it was fine. I kept it on hand and anytime his diaper rash wasn't gone after 2 days of A&D I used the athlete's foot cream.
Also my son looks like he has a sun burn on his bootie if he has diarrhea and it's left on his bottom for more than a minute or two. But that typically goes away with A&D after just a day or two and doesn't usually blister.

We had this problem years ago. My daughter was allergic to disposables and prior to making the connection, her Dr. said open air at night (line the bed and borrow pads from someone that had a hospital stay for convenience) and mycolog cream-prescription way back then but I bet there is an OTC strength now?? Worked wonders, took 3-5 days for complete results. Best of luck. J.

My daughter has had that twice and both times it was a yeast infection. The creme the doctor gave me cleared it up within days. She had red bumps, which were almost blister-like. Good luck!

You are gonna think this sounds crazy, but it worked years ago with my daughter. I was told by an older lady to buy barbasol shaving cream IN THE TUBE, not in a can....an apply it to her rash. I thought it was silly, but after trying everything else, I did buy it and use it on her. The rash was gone within 3 days. Good luck!!! Give it a try

try to leave the diaper off as much as you can - I know this can be a bit messy but getting air to the bottom will help a lot. There is this stuff called butt paste that I think works pretty well and when it is really bad, there is also a kind of powder. I would bathe and then dry and then let it at the air for an hour or so. Then when putting on diaper, I would put on butt paste. The moment I think she has pooped/peed, I would change her and give her some time with air and no diaper. good luck.

Let them run around bottomless as much as you can. Vusion usually helped clear up any horrible diaper rash for my dd. Give it a try for a day before you give up on any certain rx or methods. Give her some tylenol to help w/ the pain. I know it's so stressful, but you guys will get through it. It's just a matter of trial and error to figure out what works. Good luck!

my daughter had a bleeding diaper rash from a bad daycare lady we're pretty sure didnt change her often enough. we went to our pediatrition and he said to get the diaper rash ointment with the most amount of zinc oxide. That turned out to be desitin, and it worked really well. We also bought Aveeno diaper rash oatmeal bath and used that once a day until it went away.

My daughter has sensitive skin and gets diaper rash very easily. Desitin always worked great at clearing it up, its the best I've tried. And she's had some pretty nasty rashes, like red and bumpy and bleeding.

Both my sons had really bad diaper rashes when they were newborns so the doctor told us to use Bacitracin (first aid ointment) Vitamin E Oil and Clotrimazole Cream (antifungal for athlete's foot). We used all three every day for a few days and they really cleared it up.

Experienced this with my oldest. Two ideas: air/heat & Dr. Boudreaux's Butt Paste (widely available --look it up on www).

After a bath, lay the baby out on a towel and carefully blow dry the area (low heat, at least 12" away, keep the dryer waving back and forth quickly). This and just letting baby be diaperless more often helped. I would just wrap her lower half in a towel and read her books. As the weather allows take baby outside for a little sunshine on the affected area (not in public of course). Doctor had us simulate this by shining desk light on the region (about 6-8" away) a few minutes in AM/PM during the winter.

The overall effect was drying, which is what was needed. Also the "butt paste" product is like no other -- originally compounded by a pharmacist for babies, now mass produced -- works like a charm! Wasn't available with my first, but worked great for my youngest.

Don't panic. It will get better. My grands have been thru this. My mom told me the best thing - take plain flour and brown it in the oven. Put the flour on a baking sheet, put on a 325 degree oven, watch carefully and stir one time. It comes out when nicely browned. Let cool and then use. Good Luck.

My youngest had one of those terrible diaper rashes that never go away and the only thing that worked was Aveeno's diaper rash ointment. It was super creamy and didn't wipe off when we changed his diaper.

I don't know if this will work considering that her rash is that bad but have you ever tried Desitin (the thick cream version not the regular). When my 8 month old got a rash a few months ago I used that on her and I saw results fast. After it does go away I strongly recommend applying regular Desitin or a diaper cream ointment that is similar to it after each diaper change. I just apply a little and my baby has never had to suffer with a rash ever since. Good luck! P.S. have you asked your baby's doctor to see if he or she is allergic to anything he or she has eaten?

You might also consider what she is eating - my daughter gets terrible diaper rashes when she has too much citrus or strawberries - one strawberry is the limit over a period of a few days. Once we realized this, we've been able to avoid the issue most of the time.

I second the vote for Triple Paste. It is pricey but worth it and you can find it at Target. For a really bad rash we usually mix it with cornstarch (about half and half) and then completely cover the area at every change. This should keep moisture off her bottom and help it heal faster. this is awful, I am so sorry. I am glad that you called her dr and are working w/ him as that is my best suggestion. did he say to leave her diaper off for as long as you can to help too? you can put her on a blanket so not to have her 'go' on your floor but I would think she needs air at this point. if it is a yeas infection, sounds like it is, the meds should clear it up pretty good as in child care I have seen some bad ones that did go away fast. best of luck.

I had similar problem with my DD and trying to keep her comfortable as possible. Believe it or not I found it the best thing and it helps clears up the rash almost immediately, I use corn starch on her bottom soon after I clean her up. Some days when she is starting to get red, she will even ask for the powder and it is gone by time I change her again. Corn Starch is very cheap and does not do any damage, it is all natural.

You may wish to try Triple Paste. Yes, it is pricey but the rash should clear up quickly.

Hi Jess G. I'm sadden to read that your little fellow has a bad diaper rash. years ago a lady friend told me the the corn starch was good for baby rashes. The only thing that I could suggest his to change him as soon as he pees or poohs and lubricant that area real good and keep checking with his peditrican about this. I'll keep him in my prayers.

It could be a yeast infection and could also be a staph infection. I would take her back in to her pediatrician and see if they think it is one of those.

You've gotten some really good responses, but I didn't see a certain brand recommended. My daughter would get really bad diaper rashes and they would start to bleed. My doctor said it was probably a yeast infection and to try Lamisil (athelets foot cream). As soon as i started to use that it would clear it up right away. Of course when it gets to the point of bleeding it takes a little longer to clear up, but try Lamisil (or the Jewel or Taget private label brand but make sure it says that it is comparable to Lamisil). Good luck, hopefully it's cleared up by now but if not hopefully this will work!!!

Hi, we had this sort of thing with our daughter as well, her pediatrician suggested we buy over the counter Clotrimazole (usually for athletes foot) which worked great!! Also read that mixing that with Desitin worked well too so did that as well some of the time and everything was cleared up pretty quickly.

I HAVE TWO SUGGESTIONS
1. Brown some whole wheat flour in a skillet, like you might do for gravy, and use this like a powder.
2. Press 3 cloves garlic in garlic press and make tea using 16oz. water.
Bathe her bottom every three hours. Rub castor oil on after the tea drys.

Oh my goodness, I think I posted this exact same question when my son was right around a year old. His rash started out the same and like you, I tried every prescription, (including the vusion, which I paid $106.00 for...). My poor little guy had a rash for more than 3 months. It blistered, bled, peeled, and scarred...He would cry when I would take his diaper off, sat him down, put him in the tub...He was miserable. I was at my wits end. And to top it off, he had diarrhea that would not go away. I ended up doing research myself and found something called "toddler's diarrhea." Unfortunately, there's no cure for it and we had to just wait it out. Anyway, my last attempt to heal his poor little butt was with the original desitin in the purple and white tub. It has the highest % of zinc oxide of any of the over the counter ointments, which is the main ingredient used to clear rashes. So, finally after many months of trying and mixing, I found something that worked. It took a couple days to clear up, but I think that's what did the job for my little guy. Good luck and God bless. My doctor's office recommended a jock itch cream (antifungal cream- clotrimazole) when my son had bad diaper rash. It sounds weird but it totally worked. Talk to your doctor or nurse about it. They also recommended letting his butt thoroughly dry out several times a day. Let her lay with a loose towel over her and really let it dry out. Then I would but a thin layer of the antifungal cream and a layer of nightime desitin over it. Also a sitz bath with 1/2 a cup of baking soda was recommended too. Good luck. I know it is heartwrenching to see them in pain!

I may be yeast. It's treated easily with Nystatin ointment.

Hope your daughter is doing better. We had this with our son when he was about 4 months old and nothing the doctor or pharmacy recommended works fast enough. We had good luck with a mix of Clotrimazole 1% (for athletes foot) first if you think it might be a yeast infection, and then Bourdeaux butt paste on thickly over that. I can't use any other paste on my son without a rash developing after he poops a few times. We also got a talc-free powder (I think it was gold bond for babies? in an ivory bottle) that we added at night. Lots of layers but it did work well. It sad to see them in so much pain when you have to clean their butt. Good luck--hope you find a solution for your daughter.

It sounds infected--(e.g. could it be a staph infection?) Not sure if the cream you mentioned is an antibiotic, but it may take that.

For the longterm, when our son was little we had "naked time" ==he needed his skin to be bare (per Doctor's orders) at least a couple hours a day because of skin issues/diaper rash. It helped keep the rash at bay (tried to always make sure he had just pottied or was on a sheet or something, but it did get messy once!)

Steroid creams are often prescribed for excema, fyi.

You don't mention if you are breastfeeding or not but if you are able to, breast milk will help clear it up. Dab on a clean bottom liberally at each diaper change. Sounds crazy, I know, but breast milk is a cure all for babies. Research it online if you are able.

Poor thing! I know what you are going through. My little girl all of a sudden got diaper rash so bad she had blisters and bleeding. It was horrible. Two things - Desitin (caked on like a layer of icing on a cake)... and prescription Nystatin. If it has not been prescribed yet, specifically ask for it. There were some other prescrips we got too, but I have never heard of vusion... Also, keep changing her often and if she has a bottle before bed, cut down the amount she is taking... If need be, even wake up in the middle of the night to change her.

my daughter used to get HORRIBLE diaper rashes....like blisters! Only Huggies Pure and Natural diapers prevent it on her. The ointment we use is made up of 1/3 Butt Paste, 1/3 neosporin and 1/3 jock itch cream (sounds gross, i know) but it works like a CHARM!! My doc said that it is the same type ingredients used if she gave us prescription ointment.

My daughter has been struggling with diaper rash that turns into a yeast infection for months. The doctor prescribed 2 different kinds of ointments, which helped but never cleared it up completely. He finally prescribed an oral medication called Fluconazone, which worked in combination with the ointments and a diaper rash cream. Also, I find that feeding her some yogurt every day helps. The "good" bacteria in yogurt helps get rid of the yeast. I just give her a little YoBaby yogurt every day. Take her to the doc as soon as you can! Good luck.

have you already tried leaving her diaper off for most of the day? The air will help to dry it out, when you put the diaper back on at the end of the day, make a paste of freshly expressed breast milk with a bit of baking soda-leave on until diaper change time or in 3 hours whichever comes first. Change her diaper at the very least every 3 hours, you could also use cotton diapers which also help to alleviate the diaper rash as they have to be changed more often

It almost sounds like what my youngest twin daughter had when she was about 7 months old. They were prone to yeast infections alot, and for her, she had open sores and was always not happy when we had to change her too.
Ask your doctor for Gentian Violet - it is a liquid that is dark dark purple, doesn't taste or smell and is almost natural. Every morning when you change your baby's diaper, use a cotton swab dipped in it, carefuhat this stuff stains almost anything it comes in contact with, put it all around on her sores and everywhere down there, then take a new one, and paint her mouth inside purple. This will help if she does have a yeast infection, most start in the mouth, then work their way through the system and out, hence, the diaper rash and sores. Do this twice a day, morning and night, for however long it takes for it to clear up. It also helps if you can try to air out her bottom all day, cloth diapers help or even wrapping her in a mowgli style towel diaper, plastic keeps moisture in that helps the diaper rash get worse. Anything that is a lubricant, oil, stuff you cook with, will not help, only make it worse. Gentian violet is from a plant and most doctors will not know of it until you tell them, most like to prescribe pharmaceutical medicines over homeopathic. Try the gentian and see if it helps.
