Bad Mom Moments?

Hi.

I am exhausted. I've had a headache all day and my 2 & 3 year olds have been in foul moods since they woke up. It's just one of those days. I finally broke down and drank a Mt. Dew. Not a huge deal except I am 5 weeks pregnant. :( Prior to trying to get pregnant I had been weaning myself off a pretty severe caffeine addiction and I have always refrained from drinking caffeine with my other two pregnancies (in the first trimester). The thing is, I feel like a completely different person now. No headache and I finally feel like I can get through the rest of the day! But the Mommy-guilt is KILLING me now. :(

Anyone else with a bad mommy moment?? I'm not sure if I am trying to make myself feel so bad I don't let it happen again, or looking for support to relieve some of the guilt. :)

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone! I am aware of the caffeine recommendations, but I am worried about everything in the first trimester - especially before I can hear the heartbeat! You put my mind at ease, and I'm going to do what I need to feel human. :) You'd think I'd calm down a little considering this will be my third child!

OMG, I would trade you in a second!

First, caffiene is actually GOOD for getting rid of a headache. :)

Second, I was 5 1/2 MONTHS pregnant before I KNEW I was pregnant. I was on a prescription medication that NO pregnant woman should have been taking and everything was okay. I stressed from the SECOND I found out I was SHOCKINGLY pregnant.

Have a BIG old glass of water and a deep breath...it's all GOOD! :)

You can drink one soda a day!!
I spent half the day in the hospital with my 2 y/o because I walked in on him this morning holding a bottle of Extra Strength Tylenol, munching away on one.
Luckily they think he only had just one, they did blood work and it came back negative for toxins. Just an FYI, if they eat more than one, its bad news!
Mother of the year award goes to me today!

One Mt. Dew isn't going to hurt you or the baby. If you feel like a whole new person then it sounds like you actually did the right thing for your family.

Why feeling guilty? You did what you needed to do to be a BETTER mom to the kids already on the "outside" right? Mountain Dew occasionally is not going to hurt your baby-to-be either. All in all, I think you deserve a pat on the back for figuring out what will work for you so that you can be the best mom you can be to ALL of them! (Not to mention, feel better!)

Try not to be hard on yourself. No one can be a perfect mommy. Caffeine in moderation is ok for pregnancy. Let it go~ You are newly pregnant and you have two small children, take each day as it comes and be thankful for the mommy that you are and do your best. At the end of the day, you did you your best, and thats good enough :) Take care and maybe take your kids for a walk---the exercise and fresh air will do you all some good.

It's caffiene, not crack ;-)

Moderation is fine, and one Mountain Dew is moderate. Five, not so much. But don't beat yourself up over one, ok?

Girl, if the Mtn. Dew made your headache go away, more power to ya! I'm 7 weeks today, tired as hell, and I need a bit of Coke Zero or coffee to get rid of my headaches. A little bit won't hurt. Happy pregnancy!

I don't see the problem. A 12 oz can of Mountain Dew contains 54 mg of caffeine, well below the current ACOG recommendation to limit intake to 200 mg or less a day (2 8 oz cups of brewed coffee). Talk to your ob, but if you need the caffeine, I don't see a reason to cut it out. Also, Mountain Dew does come without caffeine.

I yelled at my little girl yesterday - I mean really yelled, with the angry face and everything. Can you just picture me, twice her height, glaring down at her. She ran to her room, face down on her bed sobbing. She cried and said I hurt her feelings. I aplogized and hugged her and we played Go Fish. She looked at me and said "now you're being a nice mommy. That's a mch nicer way to talk to me." Word for word the same thing I would have said to her in trying positive reinforcement to correct her behavior! She sure got my number.

Wow, if you think that's a bad mommy moment I'm too embarassed to list mine! I drank coffee with all four of my pregnancies. Not the whole pot but a nice cup in the morning to get me going. Moderation is the key. Give yourself a break mama!

A small amount of caffeine (a cup of coffee's worth) is perfectly fine during pregnancy. No worries. And if it makes you a better mom, you should probably have a little every day.

I mostly abstained from caffeine during my first pregnancy, but I couldn't have survived the second without it. Kids are tiring!

Why is that a bad mommy moment? I think you are being way too hard on yourself. Seriously. Take a deep breath and let this one go.

Oh, goodness, I have had many moments when I've lost it and said (or yelled) something to my kids I shouldn't have. The fact that you've been able to control yourself with the kids is a reason to praise yourself. Even if it took a Mt Dew.

I wouldn't worry too much about the caffeine. I asked my doc about it, since it's been so long since I was pregnant, and I didn't want to do anything wrong this time around, and he said 1 cup of coffee a day is okay, which is more caffeine than a can of Mt Dew. So indulging once in a while is fine, but you're doing great at controlling yourself, so give yourself credit for that too.

Indulging in the Mt. Dew doesn't make you a bad mommy - in fact, from the sounds of it, it's made you a better mommy today!

Your not a bad mommy or a bad person!! Even those that will not admit to drinking any pop or coffee during pregnancy are probably lying. Don't beat yourself up about it.

Yeah I have bad mommy moments. You know... I followed the doctor guidelines to a T when I was pregnant the first time. When I was pregnant the 2nd time with my twins I didn't follow the eating rules and I drank coffee and soda throughout my pregnancy and my babies turned out Normal and just fine! I had them at 36 weeks and 1 day with a planned c-section and my little girl was 7lbs 12oz and my boy was 6lbs 10 oz. The doctors were amazed at how healthy they were and how healthy I was during my pregnancy. The only "side-effect" if you want to call it that is that they love coffee. :)

You are fine think about it this way there are alot of women who are pregnant and dont know it till they are like 8 weeks ar more and they go about their lives and have a healthy baby. I treated myself to one pop a week if I got a 20oz it would take me 2 days to drink it. If it helped you it helped the baby. If you had a headach all day that is putting stress on you and the baby now that you have gotten rid of it you feel good so the baby will feel good. stop beating yourself up. and congrates I am hoping for #2 sometime in the future.

Caffeine is not bad in small amounts. My first pregnancy I totally swore off it except for chocolate, and my friend drank coffee every day during her pregnancy. She gave birth to a very intellgent little baby!! As a toddler her daughter is very impressive. So I don't believe it made a difference. So this time around, I am drinking a little coffee a few times a week. It's also full of antioxidants.
Now of course there is a lot more than caffiene to worry about in Mountain Dew!!
Give yourself a break. Relax, and take each day as a new one. Don't beat yourself up!!

I used to have starbucks every day from my second trimester on (would have had it in my first trimester but it made me sick). It's just caffeine, and in moderation is fine. Even my OB said it was ok. Just get through the rest of your day and then rest!
I think we have all had guilty mommy moments. Hang in there!
