Bad Morning Sickness... Ginger Makes It Worse!

I have pretty bad morning sickness. Not really bad, because I don't need IVs or anything, but enough nausea to keep me from doing normal things and taking care of my 1 year old daughter like I think I should. I've tried almost every remedy out there: crackers, eating constantly (this helps more than anything else, but I feel like I'm going to get fat if I keep it up!), anti-motion-sickness wristbands, tums, vitamin b6, unisom... I always hear that ginger is the magic remedy, but when I drink ginger tea of any kind, it comes right back up. Ginger ale leaves me feeling queasy too. Tried ginger gum and when I smelled it I'd vomit also. Has anyone else had this problem with ginger or am I just crazy? Any other ideas for things to try? I really want to be able to do things in the morning and early afternoon, but I'm tied to the couch feeling gross!

I never had morning sickness, but have read that vitamin B6 is supposed to help--it sounds like the Preggo Pops are probably based in B vitamins, but straight B6 could be a cheaper, effective alternative. Good luck!

I ate good old-fashioned, cook for 5 minutes, oatmeal for almost 9 months. It was horrible. I can't eat it to this day. Just keep track of what came back and don't have it again. It'll get better in a few weeks. I was 21 weeks when I quit throwing up, but I know it can go the whole time. Hopefully not for you! Congratulations!

Do you have any cravings? Usually food from cravings will stay down.

When I was pregnant with twins (!!!!), I had HORRIBLE morning sickness. The only thing that helped was....steak. Seriously, I craved protein like crazy. I've since heard this is very common if you're carrying twins. Most people get the extra protein from protein shakes. I kept cold steak in the fridge, I'd tear off a piece and eat it during the day. I had steak atleast once a day...sometimes three times.

In previous pregnancies, when I was sick, my doctor let me stop taking iron. I took scooby-doo chewable vitamins as my prenatal vitamins. Again, my doc said this was OK. After the first trimester, I switched back to the scooby-doo chewables WITH iron.

I was also prone to morning sickness whenever I hadn't eaten in a long time.

My sis-in-law's morning sickness was only kept at bay by a certain type of orange she discovered thru a craving.

Cravings are your body's way of telling you what it's missing. Listen to your body and remember that this part of your pregnancy will pass.

Hi! I've had terrible morning sickness with my current pregnancy (for about 5 months) and still sometimes get it even though I am 6 months pregnant. I hate the taste of ginger also and even the smell would make me nauseaus. I found a couple of things that help: Morning Wellness Tea by Earth Mama-Angel Baby Organics....it has ginger in it, but I can't really taste or smell it, it tastes and smells more like peppermint; I also got some "Preggie Pop Drops" from the Motherhood Maternity store, they help in a pinch and are especially helpful if you're driving in the car and need something quick. They are a candy though and pretty sugary even though they're natural, I found that if I ate too many of them my mouth would get sore. Other than that, I just try to keep my stomach from EVER getting empty and pay attention to things that really bother it....like fried food, anything smoked, anything acidy, anything too creamy, etc.... I hope this helps a little and that you feel better soon. I know it is soooo frustrating, especially when you have another little one to take care of. Good Luck!

I sooo feel your pain. I get severe morning sickness (daytime sickness!!) - with both pregnancies- until 22 weeks. My first pregnancy- at 5 months- I was down 15 lbs and still throwing up 6-8 times a day-until I was throwing up blood. My second pregnancy I had a new doctor and he was so kind and didn't see a need for me to be that sick, so he put me on Zolfran. It was a MIRACLE!!! I still threw up, but only once in a while. I also ate tons of oranges and jolly ranchers- anything with a little sweet and sour made me feel a lot better. Good Luck to you and this too shall pass!!!!!

I had much the same problem - it was awful! None of my girlfriends have had such severe nausea, so I kind of felt like a wimp having such a hard time when they seemed to breeze through. But it really is different for different women. Do try the suggestions you've been given (I might try some of them too!) because you never know what your particular cure might be, but some of us are just not the lucky ones who have easy pregnancies. The good thing about nausea is that it is an indication that you haven't miscarried and that your pregnancy hormones are strong. I say just arrange for as much regular help as you can with your older child and housework, stay as active and fit as you can, and try to remember that it won't last forever and it really is worth it! May you get lucky on some other part of the process, like a perfect birth.

I was terribly nauseas with my son. I would throw up anything I ate, water, crackers, bread. It lasted for about 6 months. One thing that really helped me was fresh lemon. I found that put by accident. I was cutting one and it smelled really good, so I tried it and I felt better right away. You can squeeze some in water or eat a piece before you eat your meal. I used to just suck on pieces. There was a few times nothing could stop it, but that was the only thing that helped at all. I tried the preggie pops with my daughter, but sometimes they just don't work either. I heard plain coke helped, but I quit caffeine whenever I was pregnant, so I never tried it. My sister was nauseas while she was in the hospital from all her medication, and the nurse told her to drain a can of peaches and drink the syrup. That used to help her a lot. She also would eat black licorice and apples, but the peach syrup worked best for her. Congratulations on your pregnancy, I hope you find something that helps!

Try Preggie Pops! They are suckers or hard candy that are supposed to help with morning sickness. I think they have a little ginger in them but you can't tell. I would pop one before I even got out of bed in the morning, then sit there and relax until it was gone and then I'd get up and go get something to eat before I did anything else. I ate Cream of Wheat with my first baby and Rice Chex with the second. I still got sick a few times but this seemed to help for the most part. Hang in there!

Okay - this is gonna sound crazy. My second was so horrible and awful that I was bleeding from all of the wretching. One of the only things that I could keep down were Twinkies. They were soft, and a little sugary, and they would stay down there without triggering my vomit reflex. There's probably something out there for you too, just try everything and then watch to see what happens.

I had morning sickness really bad. In fact i joked that the reason it was called morning sickness is because it started one morning and then NEVER went away. I got better halfway through my second trimester. Chewing cinnamon gum sometimes helped. i found that i had to just keep expeimenting because what would work for one day wouldn't work the next day. I also kept mints handy, that seemed to help. And I tried to force myself to eat about every two hours. If I went much longer than that the nausea would get worse. I had tons of fruit smoothies especially since they were cold it seemed to help. I tried lemon drops, that worked okay for a while. THe only thing that worked consistently was coke. Which I was very apprehensive about drinking becasue of the caffeine, but after a while my midwfife told me that one a day would be fine. i still only drank it when it got absolutely unbearable. I do not drink it normally but it is the best thing for me for nausea. I also found that my prenatal vitamins were a big part of my nausea. I tried switching to different kinds and then i just got some flinstone vitamins with a folic acid supplement. Once the crucial period was over I quit taking them all together and then my nausea was better. I was just really careful about my diet and getting the reccommended amounts of nutrients. Good luck and hang in there. Get lots of help with your little one and get a lot of rest!

I sucked on a lot of mints and lemon honey candy which is hard to find and now I never want to see it again. I also started drinking the flavored water with the low cal packs or just putting a little lemon in for taste. Like you eating was the only thing that helped. My son was sitting on my vena cave (sp?) vein and caused this as well as lower back pain for the entire pregnancy. I did prenatel yoga every day but I can't say that actually helped anything except keep me active. You just have to find low cal things that make your body think it's eating and keep up the exercise.
I did gain a lot of weight because I did eat a lot of actual food though I don't eat too bad being a vegetarian and fried foods made me gag. I just worked hard to get it off accepting that my body though the same weight would never be the same shape.

All of the normal recommended remedies made me sick too and on top of it I couldn't get up, I was so tired! Regardless the only thing I could do that made the sickness go away was apples. Not apple juice or sauce, just strait apples. As soon as I felt a bit sick I just ate one and that was it no more nausea. I could also use any fruit that was juicy and crisp like an apple, sometimes, watermelon (I don't even like watermelon but it worked), pineapple, oranges but in the end apples were the best! Good luck and remember it is short lived.

Welcome to your second pregnancy! I know you were looking for a miracle treatment so that you can be the mom you were before you became pregnant but there just isn't one. I am 24 wks pregnant and have a 2 1/2 year old...I am still looking for that miracle treatment. Once the nausea fades the fatigue of trying to keep up with a toddler while being pregnant will also leave you tied to the couch more often than you would like. You can still be a great mom while you are pregnant but don't expect to be able to be quite as active as you were before you became pregnant, you will be setting yourself up for failure.

Also, make sure your snacks (the foods you are eating constantly to help with morning sickness) are healthy snacks. If you are eating healthy foods you will not get fat.

Apples worked well during my first pregnancy. During my 2nd, I found that brushing my teeth after I ate anything helped...the aftertaste of food was making me really nauseous, so once I got rid of that, I was ok. Lemon drops helped some, too. My second pregnany was soooo much worse as far as the nausea goes. With the apples (pears were ok too, but not as good as the apples) I could only eat 1/4 to 1/2 of an apple at a time. I just felt full after that. But if you eat 1/2 an apple every couple of hours, that seems to be best. You won't get fat from that. I actually lost weight in my first trimester of both pregnancies because I was so sick I couldn't keep much down. Good luck!!

Also, if you'd like to try NATURAL essential oils EASE blended oil is soothing and calming for women with morning sickness. Use as a tea, a couple drops under the tounge, or even just rubbed on the abdomen, clockwise.

From all my research on morning sickness it seems the one item that works the best with the highest rate of positive outcome is acupuncture. You need to find a licensed acupuncturist in your area, but some women feel better after just one treatment. I am a doula in Breckenridge, so if you are in this area I can recommend someone, if not, it is usually pretty easy to find a good acupuncturist.

Hi C.,
Congratulations!
There are some other over-the-counter lollipops (like the Preggie Pops) that can help take the edge off. They are called B-Natal. Sometimes, you have to ask at the pharmacy counter for them. They have vitamin B6 in them, so that is why they are supposed to work. But, it sounds like with everything else you've tried, that may not be the answer to put you back on your feet.
There are some safe anti-nausea medications that your doctor or midwife may be able to prescribe for you that work wonders for some of my patients. One is Phenergan (good, but will make you sleepy) and the other is Zofran (very good, more expensive, but less likely to make you sleepy).
As you've noticed, having a little something in your stomach can help, so my advice is always "never have your stomach empty and never have your stomach full". Hang in there and this will eventually pass. But do talk to your doctor about the options...you don't have to suffer!

Hi C.,

I HIGHLY recommed Body Balance... it's a whole food liquid supplement, made from Aloe juice and sea veggies. The aloe is extremely soothing and does wonders for morning sickness (and the sea veggies are a great way to get the nutrients you need during pregnancy). It's a liquid so it's highly absorbed... I used it through both of my pegnancies and felt great (my midwife was really impressed w/ how good everyuthing went for me and the fact that I had clear urine (because my vitamins/minerals were actually being absorbed, unlike the horse pills that most of her clients take that cause bright orange urine). I've had a few friends try it during the morning sickness struggles and had their morning sickness completely go away. It's worth a shot!
You can get it here:

Actually, as long as you remember to eat mostly healthy foods, lots of fruits & veggies, yogurt, things like that, don't worry about weight gain. I had the same problem with my twins, for the first 4 weeks, I couldn't even drink water without it coming back up within 5 minutes. My second was similar, but I kept cheese sticks, cheese or P.B crackers, and fruit with me all the time and after the first week, I had no troubles at all. Basically, just remember to eat protein rich foods, and eat before you start to feel nauseous, otherwise you'll just start the whole ugly process all over again. Good Luck

You might try Preggie Pops -- I never tried them but have heard from others they worked well. Peppermint is supposed to help settle nausea; you try peppermint essential oil and put a drop or two in your mouth (very strong, so be ready) or even rub a couple of drops into your palms, cover your mouth and nose and then inhale deeply. Be sure to wash your hands well afterward as it will burn your eyes.

Tried acupressure? Check this link for instructions: http://www.wikihow.com/Stop-Nausea-With-Acupressure

Also, if you wanted to try another ginger option, check out sugared crystallized ginger cubes. Little chunks of spicey sweetness... I eat them like candy, they're so good. But then, I'm not prego, so don't know how they'll hit you :0)

Good luck!

Oddly, with my first pregnancy, my doctor said some women had success with fireballs! I couldn't find any during my first pregnancy, but I have some for this second one. I can't say for sure that it works, but my nausea seems to be less this time around. As for the constant eating, right now it is about whatever works - with my first, all I could eat were carbs!!! But at least I was eating something, and that's what matters. Good luck!

Poor baby, I feel for you! By my third pregnancy, the morning sickness was so bad that I threw up when food commercials came on the TV! This sounds strange (but probably not to a pregnant woman : )but the way I got through that time was to put a green olive in my mouth and just barely suck on it. My doctor said it was probably the salt in it that calmed my stomach for a little bit. The Doctor was ok with it because it helped me keep the food down. It's worth a try! Good Luck, K.

I'm sure everyone is a bit different, in terms of what works and what doesn't, as I read the other posts and remembered my own experiences. For me, none of the carbs or sugary fixes would help. In fact, the thought of them generally increased my own nausea! I remember opening a can of Coke before going to bed one night, because I was told drinking flat Coke at room temp. would help. I nearly lost my cookies at the first sip! I discovered the need for protein was what would cause my nausea, and got in the habit of rolling out of bed and heading straight down to the kitchen and eating a hard-boiled egg every day. For me, those hard-boiled eggs were an absolute staple in my pregnancy diet. And they are a very healthy choice for that growing baby. Anyway, our bodies are really good at letting us know what we need during pregnancy, so usually the thing that sounds best when you're feeling sick is the very thing you need to settle that tummy. I hope you find whatever it is that will help you most! And congratulations on the pregnancy!

I agree with the preggie pops, but you might also want to ask your doctor to do a iron check. If you are getting too much iron with your prenatals, you will be way nauseous. They can prescribe you a low iron vitamin, if that is the case. I had that same problem with my son, and it went away after I started the new vitamin.

Hope that helps!
