Okay ladies, I've tried everything from baking soda, to grinding up lemons and oranges, to throwing down ice cubes and different detergents - my garbage disposal just STINKS - anyone got any other suggestions?

Thanks!

What can I do next?

I recently had to replace my disposal and was in shock over just how nasty it was with build up. ( It was only 4 yrs old )The bleach and other things may get rid of the odor in the short term but, the build-up could be the real stinker. Lowes sales Drain Clean build-up remover which has worked well for me on other drains in my house and it ok to use in disposals. You may have to stick your hand in there and make sure that there isn't something that won't pass through that is causing you problems. For regular maintenance try putting about a cup of salt in the disposal and letting it sit for about 30-45 mins. then flush out the drain with boiling water. Good Luck.

have you tried bleach? We tried it and it worked. Dump some down and let it sit over night (dont run water or dump anything else down th drain) in the AM rinse it out.
Hope that helps!

The bleach works for me, too! Just don't mix it with any other cleaning chemicals--and that includes not running the dishwasher when the bleach is still in the drain! I did this once long ago, and the toxic fumes take over the whole house and you have to open all the windows, run the fans, and go outside for more than a half hour!

I subscribe to daily "Hints of Heloise", and I just got this one this morning:

Stinky Garbage Disposal?

Check the rubber splashguard around the garbage disposal because it could be slimy and need to be cleaned. Turn on water and pour several drops of liquid dishwashing detergent onto a round brush and then scrub the back side of the guard well. Run lots of water when you're done.

The best bet is to clean the heck out of the thing, what i do is use cream of tarter and backing soda and slowly mix vingar into a paste. Then i use a long handled scrub brush and scrub the heck out of it. Leave it sit for about and hour and then dump more vinigar down the dispoal and let it sit for another hour then flush it with boiling water. Trust me it works everytime!

Have you tried bleach? I think that maybe Lowes or Home Depot might sell a product made to specifically deal with this issue.
