So What Happened?

Okay... so I tried to baking soda, and it took it out a little bit. But I might need to try the vinegar now. I will let you all know how it works for me. Thank you all so much for your comments.

I put 1/2 cup of white vinegar in the bleach dispenser (instead of bleach), seems to work pretty well.

Baking soda or vinegar in the wash should help. If you can, hang them out to dry. But, if they keep leaving them lay, they'll keep getting stinky. It will finally get to the point where you won't be able to get it out.

It's mildew. Vinegar kills mildew. Soak the towels in some water with vinegar in the bathtub for a couple of hours and then wring out and wash with the laundry. Also check your washing machine for the mildew smell. If you find it there, then run an empty wash cycle with 2 cups of vinegar in it then let your washer dry completely afterward with the door open before putting in another load. Remember to leave the door open in between loads to avoid this in the future.

Since scented laundry products make me sick (and most commercial fabric softeners contain highly toxic ingredients), I usually do a 3-step process when I get really stinky stuff:

I add a half cup of Borax along with the detergent in a hot water wash,

I manually start the wash cycle again after the first spin, this time adding 2 cups of white vinegar,

Then I add 1/2 cup of baking soda to the final rinse. I've never had this fail with any smell, from old grease to mildew to locker-room odors.

Hello,

I have tried vinegar, color safe bleach, simple solution, you name it. The only thing that works is BLEACH! Even if your towels are not white, use just a small amount in a cold water cycle, along with your soap, and this will take care of it without bleaching the color. The trick is to just use a little though, otherwise you will bleach the color out. Trust me, this is the only thing that has worked for me!

use either oxyclean or white vinegar and resoak them in as hot of water as you can in the washer for as long as possible. I would do it for a few hours if you can. Works great!

I second the bleach suggestion. Even on colored towels. Just dilute the bleach in HOT water, then add the detergent and towels. Only a little bit works wonders, maybe 1/4 cup.

If you don't want to use bleach (and I understand why some people don't) then wash in hot water and find someplace to hang them up outside. They'll be rough when they're completely dry, but you could throw them in the dryer to soften them up a bit. But sunshine is also a great way to make clothes smell nice.

My kids do the same thing. I started adding vinegar to my towels when putting in the washer. My towels no longer ahve that musty smell they get. And you don;t have to do any kind of extra rinsing. A 1/2 to 1 cup of vinegar does the trick. You will smell it when it spins the water out but after the load is done, no vinegar small. I also use it with our blankets.

Yep, check out the smell in the washer, too! My husband was saying the towels smell and after sniffing around the machine, I dragged out the manual. Hubby was good enough to do the manufacturer recommended cleaning!

Bleach, about 1/4 - 1/2 cup. I have never had a problem with it taking the color out of the towels, as long as it's processed through the bleach dispenser in your washing machine.

Bleach if they're white, a cup or so of white vinegar in the regular wash load will do the trick for colors. I use it in nearly every wash, cheap, natural, and effective.

Add about 1/2 cup of baking soda to your wash water, and then again to the rinse cycle. The baking soda pulls the foul odor out of fabrics. This can also be used if you forget to put clothes in the dryer and they get the mildew smell.

Put them in the wash and use Ariel. Leave them there overnight. Then run the washer the next day. If you have fabric softener, add some. The softener that has the best wonderful smell is the one with the blue cap by Downey. My teenage son has a bad habit also of keeping towels in his room! But what I mentioned really works!! You could use any detergent as well, I just like Ariel for things like bad odors. good luck. tell us what happened, k?
