Banana Hook / Stand

How do you keep your bananas from ripening so quickly? I buy bananas from Sam's Club every week and sometimes it seems as if they start turning brown the very next day!

I'm thinking about buying a banana stand but wonder if they actually work!

What can I do next?

I have a banana stand. I do not put other fruit in the fruit bowl though, because the gasses emitted by the other fruit will make the bananas ripen more quickly. I buy my babanas when they are green and use them in 2-3 days. I either make smoothies or banana bread from the ones that are over ripe, or through them in the freezer to use later.

I only buy 3-5 bananas at a time, I only buy them if they're green, and I hand out one a day to make sure they get used. My kids like yellow bananas with spots that have turned a bit mushy, but for me, I only eat unripe bananas. I think the taste is completely different.

Now I want to try a banana stand!

I wrap the ends in saran wrap, after I take a banana off, I re-wrap them in the saran wrap....it works perfectly and is much less expensive and doesn't take up the space on your counters:)

I wrap the top of the bunch with plastic wrap. (They come like that in the store sometimes.) I put the plastic back on each time a banana is removed. Works like a charm! I've never used a stand.

Oh, and keep the bananas away from other fruits! (Apples, especially.) They will give off gasses and cause them to ripen.

When you. Uh them separate them. Lasts a lot longer. Read that somewhere and it really works well.

Those do NOT slow the ripening. If anything, I think they are advertised to speed it up (like if you buy green bananas).

We use one, but just because I like having them off the counter.

My solution is to not buy complete bunches. We get a few yellow, and several green that will ripen over the next several days.

To slow the ripening you can put them in the fridge... the skin will turn kinda gray, but the banana inside stays very nice.

I don't know what it's called but my mom uses an as advertised on TV plastic bag for banannas. It works really well! Surprisingly, because it is one of those products!

I think I have the same banana hook/fruit basket that Dawn has. I had no idea that the stand is actually supposed to keep the bananas fresh. I just like how it saves space in my fruit basket. I only buy bananas to make banana bread.

Just last week, I bought a bunch of bananas that were wrapped in plastic wrap at the top. They are staying fresh longer! Good luck!

I saw that you can wrap the ends in foil. Also I think they ripe at a slower rate when they're all pulled apart and not sitting in bunches. Anyways I usually use my ripe bananas for banana oatmeal, it's so yummy!

I have a banana stand. It certainly does keep them fresh longer. I just buy the greenest ones. And stick to an amount we'll actually eat. I only purchase a few at a time.

I like my banana stand that comes with a wire basket. I hang the bananas and put the other fruit in the wire basket.

In the summer, my mom puts bananas on a paper towel and sits them on the air conditioner vent (funny, I know!) They stay fresher that way.

Have you tried putting them in the frig? They'll turn black on the outside, but they're good on the inside.

btw, I got my banana stand at Bed Bath & Beyond.
