Hello ladies!
I am starting to look at things now a little bit more closely for Christmas and trying to narrow down a particular gift for my daughter. She is almost 10 and is very responsible and mature and wants an ipod touch but she also loves to read and would play on apps as well. I was wondering what you all feel is the best between the different types of devices out there that are portable and have all the features like easy reading, apps and music. I am not sure where to start, thanks!

What can I do next?

I have a Samsung Galaxy tablet that I love. I have the seven inch one, so the size is nice to read on, but it isn't as big as say, an iPad. I also have an older Kindle that I really like, but it really is only for reading, unless you get the new Kindle Fire. My sister has an iPod touch and steals my tablet whenever she can because she prefers the bigger screen. I would seriously consider a small tablet for your daughter.

My 9 yo has a fire and a touch. Biggest difference, other than screen size, is that the touch has a camera. She uses the touch to text, take pics, and take/send videos to her cousins almost daily. The fire comes out when she wants to watch movies/shows on amazon prime. She rarely plays apps on the fire, plays them occasionally on the touch. She likes to read but doesn't love it and prefers an actual book to the electronic version. The fire actually used to be her brother's and he gave it to her because he never used it, he also preferred a physical book. Might have her try the kindle app on your smartphone (assuming you have one) before you commit $$$, if I had known my kids would hate reading on the fire I would not have bought it since their touches do everything else they want.

Ipod touch can do everything and Ipad or an Iphone can do. It just has a little bit smaller screen. Both my boys 10 and 13 love their ipod touch. I don't know much about the others.

if you already have an itunes account i would go with the ipod touch. The tablet is bigger yes but it wont fit in a pocket if she wants to listen to music. I can read from the kindle app on the ipod touch. The tablets are nice but if she is wanting a portable thing she can take with her where ever she goes i would do the ipod touch. The screen is really clear on those too i was surprised. Granted I love my ipad but i will play my sons ipod touch when we are out and about.

I have a smart phone and do all the free apps and I also read a lot of books on it too. I think that anything she is comfortable with is what will make her happy.

Kindle is only a reading program correct? I would not think a pre-teen would find that to be the most versatile. But a Kindle Fire does a lot of the same things a smart phone does and it's a bigger screen, right? I am not too knowledgeable about them.

I think if you let her pick out what she wants she will be happiest. I take the kids several months ahead of time and we window shop. It's usually when the car is getting tires or something that will take time. It's not for "let's make our shopping lists" it's more like "Hey, I'm bored, you guys want to go look at toys?". Then I get an idea of what items they are looking at.

iPod Touch. Definitely. My boys (9 and 11) got theirs last Christmas and are still loving them. Be sure to get a really durable case.

If she is REALLY into reading, I would look into the Kindle Fire. It does games/apps and has a bigger screen for reading books on. If you don't think she will utilize it for much reading (really, really use it for that... my own daughter prefers paper books--she's borrowed my kindle, so I know this) then definitely go with the ipod touch.
Both my kids have touches and love them... well after a year and they use them daily..no "getting tired of" them. You CAN download the kindle app on it and read kindle books from it as well... it's just that the screen is small so it isn't as "nice" to read on. As far as games.... the ipod is the hands down choice.
