American Fork Canyon has some fun places. Its just around what use to be the point of the mountain, take the Alpine exit and head east...the Alpine Hwy will end at the mouth. You have to pay a small fee to enter the canyon but its close and a nice place to camp if you are going out for a quick weekend.

If you're looking for a campground try Tanners Flat up Little Cottonwood Canyon. If you want more of a secluded place that is close, there are lots of dirt roads past Guardsman's Pass that have fire pits where people have camped, but are not designated camp spots. Just go all the way up Big Cottonwood Canyon and there is a turn off for Guardsmans. Once you hit the end of the paved road take the dirt road and just see what looks good. The dirt road eventually will lead you to Heber and Park City.

There are some great places listed here-We went to Timpanooke last year for the first time and had a great time. Also Strawberry Pinnacles-I found them online I think it is Camelot.com (something like that) I cannot rave enough about Strawberry Pinnacles-a river to float down-a great campground-family run. Current Creek was a lot of fun also. My family has a reunion every year and we try to go places in Utah we have never been to before. Loads of fun!

Hi M.,
I live in Draper, too and this weekend, we're going camping in American Fork Canyon, just 17.5 miles from our home. We've never been camping there before, but our last trip took about 8 hours travel (including pee and play stops) so we're looking forward to a close campground.

There are, quite frankly, too many places to name here. A few quick suggestions: Jordanelle State Park and Resevoir. Jordanelle has numerous campsites for tents or trailers, they also have bathrooms with running water and even shower and laundry facilities. Rockport State Park and Resevoir also has numerous palces for both tent and trailer camping, its been some time since I camped there but I don't believe they have running water in the restrooms. The following link takes you to the state parks home page where you can find information on all of our wonderful state parks as well as make reservations: http://stateparks.utah.gov/

Enjoy your camping

I love the camping areas up American Fork Canyon - it's a really beautiful area. I love the Alpine Loop, although there are some really nice places up the North Fork as well. If you want really close, I would go with that or Big or Little Cottonwood canyons.

My husbands' family likes both Spanish Fork Canyon and Payson Canyon. There are several good spots in Logan and Ogden canyon. Sometimes it is best to take a drive up in the canyons looking for spots in which you would like to camp in. Millcreek canyon has some gorgeous spots too. Take a drive and see what suits your family best.

I grew up just over the hill in Highland/Alpine, and there are some great campgrounds in American Fork canyon. Our favorite was always Timpooneke--everyone pronounces it Timpanookee). Also, Granite Flats is fun and not as far up the canyon. Where did you live before Draper? Are you familliar with the area?

Hi M.,
We love Maple Bench in Payson Canyon. It's easy to find, covered in Maple Trees and has a little lake for fishing. It's one of our favorite places.

There are so many wonderful places in Big and Little Cottonwood Canyon. Take a drive up there one day and jot down the names of sites and/or ask someone at the booths for a campground map. I like it because it's close to home, if needed, but seems far away!

You've received plenty of great ideas, but I thought I would add just 2 more along with the link so you could reserve your spots. First is Payson Lakes (Alpine Loop, near Maple Bench that someone else already suggested) has always been a favorite of ours. The campsites are nice and the lake has a paved path all the way around, which is great for going for walks with little ones, or riding bikes, pushing strollers etc. There is fishing if you're interested and a grassy "beach" with picnic tables and BBQ grills. Second is Spruces in Big Cottonwood Canyon. Very well maintained campground, just 9 miles up the canyon. Both of these campgrounds can be reserved through www.recreation.gov as well as several of the ones that others have suggested to you. Hope this helps! Also, our all time family favorite is Moon Lake (near Duchesne, UT), but this is a 2-3 hour drive. Definitely worth checking out if you're ever up for a longer trip. We go there every summer!
