Best Detergent to Wash Pocket Diapers and Inserts

I am new to cloth diapering and have chosen to go with pocket diapers. I recently bought a sample pack from heinyking.com (hilarious!) and really like Bum Genius. I've read that the inserts for this brand can be particularly stinky, even after a thorough wash. I just ordered some "Bac Out" and Bum Genius odor remover, but I'm wondering what laundry detergent is best to wash the diapers and inserts. Any thought?

Oh, also, has anyone used Hugga Buns pocket diapers? They seem to get good reviews and are much cheaper than some of the other brands.

I love the Bum Genius cd's because we use them at night and they never leak. But they do smell! I didn't realize that the brand is notorius for that. I recently started using the Wintree detergent that you get at Costo, which surprisingly is environmentally friendly. It has a very light, fresh scent. I also rinse the nighttime insert in cold water in the morning before putting it in the diaper pail. They still smell a little in the morning when he wakes up, but it's not nearly as bad. During the day we use Fuzzi Bunz, which we love! Good luck and good for you for going the cloth route!

I don't use the same type of diapers, but we do have diaper covers that we ourselves and I have found that a soak in OxiClean gets the smell - as well as stains - out of our covers.

Hello A.-

I use fuzzybunz for both of my children, 3 month boy and 19 month girl. I have found that if you dash some tea tree oil in the diaper container you use for dirty laundry, it really helps with odors. I also use a laundry line called Ecosense to clean the diapers and all of our clothes. This detergeatn, MelaPower, is 6x concentrated compared to any other brand. So, for every 96 oz. container you only use 1/2 oz./load which gives you 182 loads/container. It sells for $14.99 which turns out to be a great bargain compared to every other brand out there. The cleaning line does not use any harmful toxins, just natural cleanser, solvents and enzymes. I have been using it with great results. I also get a Prespot spray for the messiest of diapers and have had amazing results! Gets all the poop stains out!! If you want to review the info on the products, drop me a message and I will set you up!! Talk soon and be well!!

I've been using BumGenius for 2 years. Be very careful what you use with them. I had to return mine two or three times because the elastic kept breaking. They said it was because I was using the wrong detergent (I tried a few things, all natural), and vinegar (to get the smell out). I ONLY use Allen's Naturally, which I've only found online, and I don't use any vinegar, oxiclean, or baking soda anymore. I put in about 1/4 cup of bleach once a week or so and they are no longer stinky! And I haven't had any elastic problems for months.

I'm a FuzzyBunz fan as well. In addition to what all the others have said, I have a high-powered sprayer connected to my toilet. It is great for removing all the poop from the poopy diapers (the mess goes right into the toilet) before they go in the diaper pail. I got it at:

I have the sprayer only.
