Does any one know who the 'best' doctors are to perform CVS in the area? I know that there are some doctors where that's all they do but I'm not sure about where to find them.

thank you

S.

Dr. Fredrickson at Northwestern. Myself and five of my friends have all had one from her done within the last year and it was piece of cake.

hi S. - I had a CVS performed at Northwestern by Dr. Lee Shulman. He is actually one of the first to ever perform the test - he's amazing. He made me very calm and reassured throughout the procedure. I highly recommend him. Here is his contact info:

I was extremely pleased with Dr Marilyn Frederickson, also at Northwestern downtown. Very professional, and I found her to be easy to ask questions. Her office was pleasant as well. She has also been an expert witness, which I thought was interesting.

Hi S.,
Dr. Schulman did my CVS last year and, as others have said, he is great. I actually just had another one yesterday by Dr. Jeff Dungan, also in Reproductive Genetics at Northwestern. I was very pleased again. I did request Dr. Schulman but learned that he has been teaching and lecturing around the country and world more. You may not be able to wait for him, esp since it needs to be done between 10-12wks. I was also told that Dr. Dungan has actually been doing the procedure longer than Dr. Schulman. What's most important is that the MD have LOTS of experience performing a CVS, so bottom line: go to Northwestern. The new number is ###-###-####. Good luck!

I saw Dr. Norman Ginsberg out of Illinois Masonic (free standing clinic) on Halsted in the city. He did both of my CVS and has been doing it for years. It was painless and I had the results back in less than a week. The staff was wonderful, too. I highly recommend him. I have a healthy three year old son and a healthy 6 month old daughter. It was well worth the peace of mind; I had the procedure done @ 11 weeks of pregnancy.
Good Luck!

Northwestern and Dr. Shulman is the best in this area. They were involved in the very first clinical trials of CVS and have been doing it for 20 yrs or so and so their incidence of complications is very low. Dr. Pergament is the geneticist who works with Dr. Shulman. Everyone I know that has had a CVS in chicago has used the same practice. If you don't find Dr. Pergament and Shulman's number on the web, let me know and I will root it out for you. I used them myself twice and intend to again.

Dr. Ginsberg did mine as well. He is actually one of the people who pioneered the procedure and has literally done thousands of them.

Just wanted to echo some of the advice below. I had a high-risk pregnancy for my twins and ended up having an amniocentesis. Dr. Jeff Dungan did the procedure. He works at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. He was excellent and had a nice calm manner to him. And so was the support staff from the genetics department regarding being available for counseling should the test have been abnormal. Dr. Bill Grobman is also fantastic with prenatal procedures, I've heard. He is a practicing obstetrician with the Maternal Fetal Medicine (high-risk OB) group at Northwestern. They were my OB group throughout my twin pregnancy and were all terrific!

Anyway, I would try one of those 2 people. Their complication rates for amnio/CVS are MUCH lower than the national average. And I commend you for researching it before you go to just anyone!

if you are in the Chicago area see Dr. Yury Verlinsky. He was a pioneer in this procedure and an excellent choice. he did both of mine (1988/1990). For more information go to

I believe there is a doctor at Illinois Masonic in Chicago who actually was one of the pioneers in CVS and his miscarriage rate for CVS was the same as amnio (both are VERY small - 1%). I had my CVS done there with my daughter who is now 8, so I don't remember his name or even if he is still there, but the reproductive clinic there should be able to refer you. Otherwise I would try a major teaching hospital or reproductive clinic in your area. Ask who their most experienced doctor is and what the miscarriage rate is, if that is a worry for you.

I was interested in CVS for my daughter because I was in my mid-forties and already had two children with special needs. Their issues were not genetic but I was becoming increasingly frantic about the pregnancy and wasn't very far along! The CVS was definitely the way to go instead of waiting.

S.:

I cannot remember the name of the Doctor who performed mine, but you can probably find him by calling ###-###-####. He's at Northwestern and the the Genetic Counselors there who helped me set-up the appointment said he has done more of these than most Doctors in the U.S. If the receptionist at that number can't help you, you might ask to speak with the Genetic Counseling area.

Good luck.
