So it turns out that the dog food and treats that I have been giving my skye terrier mix has been upsetting his tummy. The vet told me that terriers are a lot like humans in that they need to eat a low-fat diet. She did give me a prescription dog food that is low fat, high fiber, to help settle down his stomach issues and help it heal but at $2.50 a can, I was wondering if any dog enthusists out there know of a brand that I can pick up at Petco or Petsmart that will be almost as good and easier on my dog's stomach to digest. I'd also like some recommendations on some low fat, easy to digest treats as well. He's feeling a lot better now so I am thinking that we no longer have to stick with the prescription dog food as long as we can find a suitable replacement. Thanks everyone!
Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I ended up purchasing Nature's Recipe Terrier dog food. It doesn't have any wheat or corn in it so I am hoping that it will be easier on his stomach than the stuff we had been giving to him before. Have a great weekend and thank you again for your responses!
I feed my French Bulldogs Canidae Grain Free. It cleared up their allergies!
we dont have a skye terrier, we have a dachshund, but she also has a sensitive stomach. We feed her Pro Plan's chicken and rice formula and have never had a problem. She started with the puppy formula and is now on the senior.
Go with a premium brand. I have used Natural Balance and Royal Canin and really like both with good results. Some brands will have a sensitive stomach one and know a few people who really like Blue and Innova. Some times one brand works better for one dog than another so it may take trying one or two kinds to find what works best for your guy. The rx diet is great to get him back on track, if you still have a hard time finding something that works for him, there are also rx diets that are dry food for sensitive stomachs.
For treats one of the things I really like is Natural Balance soft food. It comes in rolls and is regular dog food, but cut up it is wonderful for treats. I also use milkbone brand milkbones. I have a larger dog and just buy the small ones, she cares how many treats she gets, not how big they are. I have tried the petco brand and they made our dog very gassy. If your dog likes veggies, carrots and green beans are great treats.
Good luck and hope you find a food that works soon. One other thing when you are switching brands, do a gradual change over about a week to help with the adjustment to the food and it may take several weeks of being on a new food before you see a change.
Anything with a high corn bi product is going to be hard to digest.
My rule of thumb is if you can buy it at a grocery store, it's not he best food.
We feed our dogs Kirkland's food at Costco. It's not the highest rated food but it's very good.
