I am on the board of a non-profit working to create a literacy-based children's museum in Fairfax, VA. I am wondering what parenting/educator listserv/site you would recommend us posting a volunteer ad on? We're looking for adults to read to children or do craft activities at Celebrate Fairfax. Look at the "Local Business Review" for Play With Words Children's Museum if you need more info to point me in the right direction.

I'm the volunteer coordinator for Loudoun Habitat for Humanity's new resale store (ReStore) so I understand the challenge you are facing :) I've listed the ReStore on www.wjla.com and 1-800-volunteer.org although it is too soon to know if those are working. You should also try the local MOMS' Clubs. They are always looking for service projects. Go to www.momsclub.org to get more info. I'd also suggest contacing local independent living centers. There are probably some grandparents out there who'd love to get involved. Good luck! This is a great project!!! We've needed a local children's museum for years!

I actually found out about the opportunity last night through a PMF posting, so you're doing a good job already! I would suggest:
Ourkids.com
Local schools
Local universities, esp. those with education programs or Language and Literacy Programs (GMU, Georgetown, GW, etc)
Also, have you heard of freecycle? It's for giving away and getting free stuff, but most towns also have a "Freecycle Cafe" for posting other kinds of local requests, so that might be a good spot.
I plan on volunteering that weekend and the event sounds cool! Thanks for the work that you do for kids!

You could post the ad on Idealist.org they are not specific to any volunteer catergory, but when you search you can put in what category you want to search. Also volunteermatch.com is a good site. Good luck.
