Best Way to Transport Milk When Weaning Toddler off of Bottle

Hi all,
We have just weaned our toddler off of his bottle and on to cow's milk in a sippy cup. When we go on outings we still fill a bottle with milk and take a sippy cup to pour it into if he wants milk. But we have to hide the entire process so he won't see the bottle. Does anyone have any suggestions on the best way to transport milk without it spilling and lightweight? The sippy cup that we use spills out. Ideally we would like something lightweight and BPA free.

Target has some cups by munchkin in their baby section. They are BPA free. They make great cups that have a straw that folds into the cup, and one of them is even an insulated cup.

There are some great stainless steel thermoses that have kids characters on them that you could put his milk in, then as he get older he can use it for his lunch box. The only bad thing about using a Sigg is hat they have smallish mouths and may be a pain to clean if you forget it in the car (just wanted to point that out, it happened to us and now we have the special sigg bottle brushes, but still hard to reach the upper bottle neck area).

My first suggestion would be an insulated sippy cup that doesn't spill (unless you are using the leaky cup for a specific reason). I have a Gerber sippy that is insulated enough to keep milk fresh an short trips and it doesn't leak at all. You can also find a small stainless steel thermos at Target/Fred Meyer/WalMart that you can transport the milk in and just serve it out into the cup when you need it. They keep milk cold/cool for up to 12 hours and hold about 20 oz.

I was just at REI and they had an insulated stainless steel sippy cup with handles, BPA free, that was really cool. A little spendy, but worth it if you are going to be giving milk away from home on a regular basis.

When our son was at that transition, we used a steel thermos as well. I'd keep it in the fridge so it was chilled, and then fill it with milk when we went out. It also worked great for road trips.

Our favorite for years was the playtex insulators. Nooo leaks. And the valve fits on two spikes in the dishwasher...which is fantastic for easy cleaning. We also always threw the cups and lids themselves into the dishwasher (although that makes them wear out faster).

Nowadays we use the camelback flippy straw cup thing. Not as easy to clean (the valve doesn't come out), but it's my son's favorite. ::Sigh:: I used to get more input!!! Next thing you know...blah blah blah baby growing up. Ah well.

For transporting milk:

Either a thermos, or keep a little ice chest in the car.

my husband and i bought 12 oz klean kanteen with the sippy attachement from Avent for the actual Sippy and then bought a Rubbermaid half gallon drink container for 3.00 to transport the liquid acctually we bought two, one for water one for milk so the twins have a sippy of water and a sippy of milk if needed when we go on long trips.

I would recommend just getting a different sippy cup. There are plenty of them out there that do not leak, or have lids, or flip shut to seal.

Hellp,

we just fill the amount of cups we feel we will need for the day depending on where we are going. I bough a nice small cooler in sporting goods @ walmart, kinda looks like a diaper bag I suppose, but we just put in the cups with ice packs. no problem. and it has other compartments for other things.diapers.wipes ect.. easy

I would definitely recommend you find a different sippy cup that doesn't leak. Sippy cups are going to be your lifeline for quite awhile. Our daughter is 2 1/2 and still uses one on outings. In the meantime you could use either an insulated thermos or the medela breast pump storage bottles have tightly screwed lids and are BPA free.

We have been using the playtex insulators for 2+ years - I believe that they are now BPA free, and they have NEVER leaked for us - we went through our fair share of cups that did! We use the sippy, not the straw. You can also just do water out, and order milk if you are in a restaurant or something...I am (pleasantly) surprised by the number of people who are in favor of the tin reusable thermos...I have heard from many people that they don't get cleaned well, and I bleieve that many have tops that are not BPA free...although that may be different from when I was looking at them months ago.

An aluminum water bottle. You can find them at almost any department store, sporting goods store, Whole Foods... they're next to the other water bottles. Congrats on your upcoming birth and your son's transition to toddlerhood. Don't be surprised though if he takes a step back and wants to have a bottle when his little sister arrives. At 15 months he won't be able to accept reasoning, so don't get too upset when it happens.

For a sippy type cup that stays cold for a long time we found our best bet was a Klean Kanteen with the sippy spout adaptor (seen here):

Also, as a side note, we did try the FooGoo sippy that Babies R' Us sells but found that it leaked quite a bit when thrown or dropped from the high chair.

My kids are older and off the sippy.. But I used a 16 oz metal thermos that I bought at starbucks to carry extra milk (try REI).. The sippy cups that did not leak for us.. are made by Gerber they are the tall (12oz) ones that change color with cold liquid. (the cups are shaped like an hour glass) easy to grip.. cheapest place I have found them is at target.. they sell them at baby r us.. I have tried so many sippy from super expensive to cheap.. these are middle of the road price and easy to clean.

Why not just fill the sippy cup with milk to start off with? We fill our son's cups with milk and put them in the bag with the same ice packs that we used to keep his bottles cold. We also use a thermos from time to time seeing as that is made to keep things hot/cold. You could always try a BPA free Thermos and use that to fill up the cups.

We just give our son water when we're out and about. We bring an empty cup and fill it where we're at--it's easier than worrying about it spoiling, for us at least.
