So What Happened?

Thanks for all the input. I will head to bike store and get a real bike for her with her this weekend, either Schwinn retailer or at Spokes in Vienna, VA.

The bike store next to Buy Buy Baby in Congressional Plaza, Rockville (Halpine/Rockville Pike) has a great selection and very sturdy bikes. My 20 month old son was able to balance without any rocking on the 2-4 yr old bike, I think they run around $80.

I recommend the Skuut Bike. It doesn't have training wheels or pedals, but it teaches them how to balance. Check it out at www.skuut.com. Good luck.

We bought my son a "Trek" bicycle for his 3rd birthday (which is in December.) He had the training wheels off within 9 months and we took it back to where we bought to have them put on a kick-stand. He turns 6 this year and we are getting him a new bike for his birthday since he has outgrown his current one. We will be happily passing it on to his younger brother who is 2.

You need to hit the stores and see what types of bikes are out there. Our daughter picked out a Princess bike at K-Mart. Granted her dad was out shopping and saw that it was ON SALE. Needless to say she loves it and would ride it constantly. My daughters Princess bike actually has better training wheels on it than her brothers bike from Toy-R-Us.

Hi C.-

If your daughter is not a real girly girl or very clumsy, you may not need to get her a bike w/training wheels. She can actually learn to ride in about 30mins. to an hour if you can work with her one day for 1 hour she will most likely catch on and never need the training wheels. If you're excited, she'll be excited. If you're not afraid, she won't be afraid.

Hope this helps

Last year, we bought a cute little red bike at Spokes for my then three year old daughter. I don't remember the brand, but it is a "real" bike, not a toy. The sales people were very helpful about sizing it for her.

Spokes is in Vienna by the trail and also in Ashburn.

You can't go wrong with a Huffy, however, let your daughter pick out what is comfortable for her to ride. We went to Toys r Us (Glen Burnie) and pulled out and let my son test ride everything he wanted to until he found one that was comfortable and steady for him. He ended up picking a sturdy brand and cool looking bike that he is confident on. Giving them the power in such things is half the battle in gaining confidence.
The Glen burnie store had big wide aisles in the separate 'bike' area for easy & safe test rides.
Good luck!

My 4 year old daughter is very petite for her age. She loved riding her Fisher-Price bike for a year or so till we upgraded her to a Huffy Princess Bike http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=1953330
she loves riding this bike and has been doing really well with it. Best of luck in your bike search!

The best way to know for sure is to take her to the bike store and let her try out a few. A test drive is critical. You can probably get a decent bike at Sears or someplace like that and Huffy is a pretty popular children's brand, but bike stores have reasonably priced children's bikes that can be measured to fit and grow a bit with her. Also, there's usually a repair shop in the back in case you need something fixed or, if you're as mechanically challenged as I sometimes can be, you need someone to put on or take off training wheels. Even if you want to surprise her with a bike, let her test drive a few to see what will work for her and get an idea of what she likes. You can always put a hold on it and come back later to pick it up.
