Bikes

I have a daughter who will be 3 in March, and we are planning to get her a bike of some sort. I'm leaning towards getting a "big girl bike" with training wheels, but my husband thinks we should get a tricycle. She sat on a tricycle at the store a few days ago and quickly figured out how to pedal, so I think she may outgrow that too quickly. Any thoughts?

What can I do next?

We skipped the tricycle with my oldest son and got him a big boy bike when he was 3. He loved it and was coordinated enough to use it. Just don't try to get one that is too big, otherwise she will not be able to easily or safely use it.

My oldest daughter wich is now 10 started out on a trike when she was one and a half so to me you should be buying a big girl bike but one that is really small enough so she can touch the ground with at least one foot and use the traning wheels. my daughter was 4 and ready for them to be takin off. but my two youngest are 3 and 4 and the 3 year old can ride a big girl bike but not the one with brakes. my 4 yr old is doing great on his big boy bike but still can't balance and they both had trikes for awhile before we started on the bike. At 3 I would start on a big girl bike.
I hope this helps.

I work at a toy store that sells bikes and I speak from experience that she will grow out of a tricycle very quickly. I would go with a 12" bike with training wheels. It's one step up from a tricycle and should be good for her for a couple of years. But your best bet is to take her with you when picking out a bike so that way you can size her on the bike to make sure it isn't to small or to big for her. Ask a salesperson, that what they are there for and what they are trained for! Good luck! :)

Definetely get the trike! She will love it and have lots of time before she outgrows it. The seats and handlebars adjust up to keep up with their growth, and even after she moves on to a "big girl bike", she will enjoy playing with a trike. Also,by then her little brother will be ready for it! Riding a trycycle first will give her the opportunity to develop her skill at pedaling and manuevering before she has to learn to balance. It's like learning to walk before learning to run. Kids grow up fast enough! Why hurry it?

I can give an argument either way, but keep in mind that just because she figured out the Tricycle quickly doesn't mean she'll get bored with it. My son got his tricycle for his 2nd birthday and didn't quite "get it" until closer to age 3 and is almost 5 now and still has fun riding it. We got him a "big boy bike" for his 4th birthday and he likes it but still prefers the trike. If you do get her a "big girl bike" you'll have to get a small one anyway and it won't save you that step in the long run, you'll eventually have to buy a bigger bike. My advice would be to go with the tricycle. She'll be able to pass it down to her sister when she gets her big girl bike in a year or two. Hope this helps!

Is she very outgoing and fearless? The little girl next door rides her bike all the time (and did last summer when she was just turning 3). My son on the other hand would not ride his bike...but he also doesn't like swings so much, or swimming, or anything that's out of his comfort zone.

She's definitely at the age for a bike w/ training wheels. Of course, she will still enjoy a tricycle, but she is definitely old enough for one of the small 2-wheel training bikes! She will love it!

I think the tricycle is a great idea for her. If/When she outgrows it, you will have it for your younger daughter. My nieces have a tricycle that they still ride and they are 6 and 8.

Hi. We bought my son a tricycle last year when he was 2 and for Christmas this year we bought him a T. Train "big boys" bike. He adjusted really well. Just make sure when you buy her a bike that you get one in her age range and you get her all the pads and helmet. I hope this helps. But each child is different. Good luck.

Our daughter started riding a "big girl bike" with training wheels right after she turned 3. She also has a big brother who she wants to do everything like! But if she will be excited about it, her age is just fine for a bike. She should be zooming around by mid summer.
Have fun!

When my daughter was 3 1/2 someone gave us a small girl's bike with training wheels(hand-me-down) and she learned how to ride it easily. Last summer when she was 4 1/2 we took the training wheels off and she quickly learned to ride without the training wheels. We bought her a bigger bike for Christmas which she will be racing around on as soon as the weather warms up! I would offer you the hand-me-down that Cayla learned on, but I think my husband is planning to paint it and teach our son to ride on it too!
