I'm trying to figure out how my kids can learn Spanish and I'm wondering if there are any preschool and/or kindergarden programs in the San Diego north area.

So What Happened?

When I moved to San Diego in 2008, I didn't know about the lottery system for public district and charter language immersion schools, so my only choice was to enroll my son at Sherman Elementary. He has thrived there and now his brothers go there too. So everything worked out great. Thanks for all the replies.

My name is G. and I run the San Raphael Spanish Academy in Carmel Valley. (South of the 56 and east of the 5).

We are a home based preschool and accept children from 8 weeks to 5 years old. We have a maximum of 12 children enrolled per day, and have 3 teachers who are all native Spanish speakers. Most of the children start here at 2 or younger and then stay here until they go to Kindergarten, so we generally only have a few spaces available at a time.

Our head teacher has many years of experience teaching young children preschool in both Spanish and English. She is a native Spanish speaker from Chile, and is also a qualified Kindermusik teacher and teaches the children fun yoga too. The day is filled with songs, games, arts and crafts, working on gross and fine motor skills, as well as working on early math, reading and writing skills. Children learn "the rules" for school – like waiting your turn, sharing, manners and co-operation. We have been complimented on how "school ready" children are when they leave us. We have children attending who are from dual language home (English and Spanish), as well as children from homes that are dual language but none of those languages are Spanish.

Most of our learning is done through playing and exploring, as we know that children this age get bored very quickly. We go for regular "nature walks" too.

Take a look at a few of the recent videos I made:

Have you heard of The Language Academy? A friend of mine has her two kids in the French program. They have done very well.

There are a few Spanish immersion schools but your probably too late for this fall. Longfellow is in Bay Park, Star*** something is in UC. And if you're lucky enough to end up in Del Mar, Del Mar Heights is starting to offer Spanish classes in Elementary. Those are the ones I know of......I'm sure there's more. You can always look at sandi.net or if you end up in a city outside of San Diego check the district's website.

I am also in Clairemont and googled and found some. My husband and his mom is bilingual, so we just decided to try and have them work with my daughter. Also, if she watches many videos, most of them have a language option of Spanish. Even a little exposure is better than nothing.

I commend you on this and think in our day and age it is a great tool for our little ones to learn early, when it is easiest. Also, studies have shown their brains to develop differently and help with learning other skills better.

Also, maybe check into Pacific Beach. I found several there, but didn't interview them. One I found taught Eng, Span and French! Most are a little more, but not a lot.

Good luck!
U.

I don't know of bilingual preschools, but there are several elementary programs. In San Diego Unified, Longfellow and Spreckles both have immersion programs. Longfellow is in Bay Park and Spreckles is in University City.

Since you ask for "bilingual preschools", there are two in the same building at 3219 Clairemont Mesa Boulevard, San Diego 92117, in the Clairemont area, easily reached off I-5, first exit on 52 east. One is German, and the other one is French. The phone number for the German preschool is 858/272-3832. My son will go to the German preschool starting in September. They start as early as 2 years, but of course, you need to sign up well in advance. Good luck!
