I used to braid hair for a freind of mine and she had the same issue. It can be fairly common in african americans. What you can do is take out her braids and "scratch out" her scalp. When her hair is free run a wide tooth comb through it, then have her take a shower and wash her hair, with something like baby shampoo or any gentle shampoo should work. Then when her hair is damp and the scalp still moist, use the comb and make a part, then rub the comb in circles against the scalp to remove the scales. Just keep making parts and repeat all over. It may not all come off right away but this is the first step in letting the scalp breath. It may be something you have to do once a week or so but it does help. Also you can try head and shoulders shampoo, which is what my peds. recommended for bad cradle cap. I would also leave her hair loose for a while with no braids, they can be rough on the scalp. or do light braids that she can take out at night and run a comb through. The more you massage the scalp the healthier it will be. Good luck, hope this helps.

When my daughter was 8 a similiar situation happened to her scalp. I tried many over the counter treatments but nothing worked. I finally took her to the doctor and he said that she had a fungal infection and it required an antiobiotic. He asked me if she was using a mat in gym class. At the time they were teaching the kids how to do summersalts ect... he said it happens often. Some child probably had a fungal infection on their feet and they had stepped on the mat before my daughter then used it to stand on her head to do a summersalt.

Hello H.. I was going to suggest an organic shampoo. I had terrible dandruff and I looked online to find something to help. I tried so many different oils, and dandruff shampoos in my hair that helped for a short time. I read that shampoos with ammonium lauryl sulfate in it can cause dandruff. I tried Burt's Bees shampoo/conditioner, and the first time my dandruff was eliminated:) Hope this helps.

Hi H.,
If is very bad, you may want to take her to dermatologist. There is a prescription oil that I was given last year that you have to rub into your scalp when your hair is wet and wear a plastic cap for a few hours. Also, the braids may be making it worse. My aunt also recommended to me a copper bristle brush made by Vidal Sasson that Wal-Mart sells. The copper repels the dandruff. It retails for approx.$10 and works very well, provided that you use it daily.

Coat her scalp with baby oil a half hour before you are ready to wash he hair. Use head and shoulders shampoo, lather it on her head and let it set a couple of minutes. Use a comb, while the shampoo is on her head and comb the scalp over and over. Rinse and repeat. After you are finishing her wash, put a hydro cortisone cream on her head. You will need to do this a few times, in a row.

there is a greese type product. It is called hair food. I can't find the one I have for my son to give you the name of it. I get it at a Family Dollar Store Its a greenish-yellow color in a see threw jar.

You have to part her hair every 1/2 inch and rub the greece on with your finger. I would do this at night and have her wear a scarf to bed.

Hi H.,
You might want to take her to the doctors.
the same thing was going on with my daughters scalp. I thought she just had really dry scalp or maybe eczema. It turned out to be a form of ring worm. I was shocked because it didn't look like it. She gets her hair washed every week and I oiled her scalp everyday. When we found out that it was ring worm she had to use a prescription shampoo for like 2 months and had to take oral meds. I had to wash her hair 3 times a week. It was a mess. It was so bad. After all that she still loss a nice size patch of hair. it has since grown back, but it was an experience. I would recommend letting the doctor look at it. I wish i had taken my daughter sooner it probably would have been easier to treat.

H., although the bi-racial aspect may come into play here, it may also be a condition known as ecto-dermal dysplasia. This is a condition that affects the hair, teeth, and nails in various degrees. My daughter, also 13, was diagnosed at age 4.
The best treatment is perscription strength Nizoral shampoo and a perscription scalp oil. Both are very effective with regular use. Once the cradle cap is under control, application can be limited to once a week. Your best bet is to see a dermatologist and get treatment started right away. Being 13 is tough enough without worrying about how her scalp looks. Good luck.

My 6 yr old son had the same problem. I used vitamin E oil. Spray it on her scalp an hour or so before she takes a shower. She'll have to massage her scalp a little when she washes it but after just a few treatments, my son's cleared up. Every now & then it comes back (if he washes his hair too much). My 5 month old just went through the same thing. I just started this treatment on her and it's already gone!

Hi:
I worked in a couple of salons for a few years and while I have seen things that sound like what you are discribing. Some people just have large scales almost like your skin sheds. Its rare but not really bad at all. I would really suggest 3 things for you, of course the extreame would be to see a dermatologist, mid way would be to set up a regular appointment with a hair dresser that would be more familiar with conditions of your daughter's hair. They can work wonders and shampoo and styles are not hard on the wallet around 25 dollars or so for a wash and blow out and lastly it may just be the hair products that you use. #1 make sure that ceretyl alcohol is not one of the top 3 ingredients listed on the back of your products bottles. they dry the hair and scalp out and the higher they are listed on the bottle the higher the percentage of that ingrediant is used in that product. Let me know if that helps you out.

I have been using cheap Olive Oil on my baby's head to remove cradle cap. The oil moisturizes her scalp and softens the skin. Then I gently do circular motions with my finger nails on her head. I leave the olive oil on for a few hours before I wash it out.

My 11 year old has dry scalp in a couple of places, certainly not as bad as your daughter.Do you have a nail brush type of brush, you can use to loosen the patches of hard skin to try and get rid of it? Some of what you are using may be making it worse.

As suggested,I would definitely see the doctor,to rule out something bacterial.

Have you ever tried tea tree oil? I shop at a wellness company that uses tea tree oil in many of their products and it has helped many babies with cradle cap,so it could be a big help for your daughter.Sometimes changing shampoos can help as well. That is suggested that we all try a different shampoo once in a while for best results from our favorite brand. What about a leave in conditioner (spray type) or even just a regular conditioner, putting extra and letting it sit to soften the scalp.
If you want more information on tea tree oil, just email me.

I have three daughters and a history of eczema for myself which unfortunately I have handed down to my daughters. They all have minor to major issues with their skin. I use Tea Tree oil on my youngest(3yrs old)scalp. She sometimes scatches and draws blood. You should find it at an hair supply store or even a pharmacy. But make sure it's 100% pure. I usually wash her hair with a medicated shampoo and try to rub my fingertips (not fingernails)on her scalp to loosen the old dry skin. After towel drying I will section her hair in 1/2 inch rows and rub the tea tree oil "generously" throughout her head even in areas she doesn't have dry skin. When you comb or brush the hair it will distribute better throughout the missed areas. It's a great natural moisturizer that won't dry out after a few minutes or hours. I tend to reapply it to her scalp atleast every couple of days even if I don't wash it. But you should probably wash her hair atleast 2x a week. I try to wash every 3 days. It's the best way for the scalp to absorb the extra moisture it needs from the oil and from the medicated shampoo. It may take only a week to see the difference. The one thing I've been looking for is a better smelling medicated shampoo. I currently use Denorex. Hope it helps.

Try T-Gel shampoo, the generic brand (from WalMart) works just as good at a fraction of the price! Olive oil will help loosen the scales also. You have to keep up with it but it should only take a few days to be rid of. and then treat maybe 1x a week. There is no CURE but it is manageable.

If it looks like cradle cap, it probably is! Cradle cap is another name for seborrheic dermatitis, which can occur at any age. I agree with the recommendation for T-Gel or the generic version (yes, just as effective and cheaper). You can actually leave it on for 5 or so minutes before rinsing it out and it'll work faster. You will probably need to follow it up with some super conditioning treatment, because it can be drying, though. If that doesn't work in a couple of weeks, do check with a dermatologist--they have some options in their arsenals that aren't available over the counter.
