Okay ladies, I just had a baby girl 2 weeks ago. I am 99.9% sure I am done having children. I am looking at having a 5 or 10 year IUD or my friend gave me info on essure. This is a permenent procedure that is done in the office. Any suggestions? Has anyone else had this essure procedure done? Does it hurt? Any thoughts would be great! :) Thanks in advance!

What can I do next?

I had the Mirena IUD and I loved it! I had no periods while I had it. No problems whatsoever. When my husband and and I decided to have one more baby, I had the Mirena removed and I was pregnant six week later! I definitely recommend Mirena!

I say that if you are sure that you don't want to have any more children have the tubal ligation procedure done. It is safe and 99.9% effective and there is no pain involved. I had it done twelve years ago and I have had no problems. I just have a problem having some foriegn device implanted inside of me for any reason. I will only do that if it is a life threatening situation.

I am done having kids after 2.. I asked my dr about tubal ligation.. He said not to do it.. he said to get the IUD. It is safer and can be reversed ifyou change your mind.

There is a small risk with the tubal ligation (general anesthia etc)

My dr did not recommend the essure procedure... but then they are not trained in it.. not every dr is trained in essure.

Check in to Mirena, I have had it for 9 months now and love it!!
It was like a huge cramp going in, and I cramped a little afterwards. Now I virtually have NO periods! its great, spotting sometimes. but it has gotten rid of my bloating, mood swings, cramps and the flow all together!
Its a 5 year IUD, which can be taken out at anytime. What I did was go to my Dr. and ask for pamphlets and then go back in a few days and talked to her about it, my dr. was truthful with me about what she liked and didn't like.
If you have any more Q's about Mirena let me know and I would be happy to answer them.

I am in the same boat. One thing to consider - you have to find out which IUD your insurance covers - so do that first and then see if it is the one you want.

Mirena has hormones in it. If you are breast feeding a small amount can go to the baby.

Paragard has no hormones and has been on the market longer and has no hormones. It does have more bleeding involved from the reviews I have seen.

I concur with others - have the husband get snipped (it still takes 6 months to be in the clear). I am trying to convince mine since I went through 2 unplanned c-sections!

Congrats on the new baby.

Hi,

I had the essure procedure done two years ago. I think its the best thing ever. My doctor put me under general anestetic and told me to take it easy for two days. I was drowsy after the procedure but felt great the next day and was on my way to my regular routine. I have not had any problems and I have not experienced any difference. I can honestly say that I did not have any pain afterwards and I have not had any complications since getting the procedure. My only caution is that you and your husband agree that this is the right procedure for the two of you as you know it is permanent. I hope this information works.

You didn't mention your age, but that has to be taken into consideration before a permanent birth control solution takes place. Circumstances change, no matter how sure we are of the now. If you are still in your child bearing age, then I would go with an IUD. I just had mine changed for the 1st time, and I have great experience with it, I went with Mirena. A bonus is that it practically eliminates your monthly flow, without that 'hormonal' feel like BC pills do.

Why not send hubby to "the vet"? My husband had a vasectomy 27 years ago. No leaks, no side effects, except to his mind for a few days, LOL! There are far fewer risks for men to have this procedure than for women to deal with it for the next, oh...20 years with the pill, IUDs etc. If you are both sure you are "done" it is a great way to go!

I had essure done on April 24th, there was absolutely no pain at all. I even went RUNNING the next day. I would highly reccomend it based on the expirience I have had so far. I do not go in for my 3 month follow up (to be sure it worked on both tubes) until late July. However, I had a friend who had it done over a year ago and she said it was ideal for her too. There was a little spot bleeding for a couple of days nothing really severe that was lighter than a period. Doctors have a few differnt options for medication prior to the procedure, because I was already on the pill I just started taking it every day of the month for three months to "thin" out the walls and make it easier to have the springs inserted.

My procedure was actually done in the hospital, my doctor prefers it that way just incase there is a complication, though rare as it is to have one.

Again I highly recomend it if you know for sure you are done having children. I know not all doctors will do it because of the need to interject thier religous beliefs on you, or some do it in thier office because some hospitals similar beliefs. However, it is your decision not anyone elses so do not let that concern you. If you know you are done, go for it. Also as my doctor told me it is covered by 99.5% of all insurances because it is less than birth control the rest of your life and less than the cost of an unplanned pregnancy as you get older and risks and costs become more.

If you are definatly sure you and your husband are done. Than I would do the essure if not than I would go on the pill. I did the IUD I had it in 6 months and had it removed. I ended up having cysts on my ovaries from the iud let alone to say I felt like a water balloon. I donot recommend the IUD.

HI M.-

I also went with Mirena, as a few of the ladies on here have done. It has been great for me. I agree with one of the other posts - you don't want to make a permanent decision right now, while your baby is still so new. You may find that you want another one once your youngest is older. Or maybe not, but it is nice to know that option is still available to you. I think it would be best to go with something that works for 5 years, like the Mirena, that gives you some time to be sure about your decision before making it permanent. I also have three kids and was 99.9% sure that I was done after my third, but I like knowing I can change my mind.

Hey M.,
I think that everyone responds to birth control differently. I have had terrible results with birth control. I got pregnant on the pill (I have a teriffic 13 yr old son now), pregnant on the shot ( a fantastic daughter who is almost 12), and pregnant with norplant (the one that goes in your arm)(I miscarried that child). I had the Merena IUD put in about 5 months ago and love it! No problems so far and almost no peroid anymore. It works with a hormone and blocks an egg, so hopefully.... I won't have anymore teriffic and fantastic suprises. We tried for 6 months for my now 2 yr old...GO FIGURE! I was 99.5% sure I was done having kids, but I wasn't ready to get "fixed" and my husband won't even think about it. Good Luck, do lots of research, and talk with your OBGYN. Everyone is different.

Congrats on your new addition!

Hi,
I am a HUGE fan of the mirena IUD. I am on my second one and have had great sucess and next to no periods with them. they can be removed anytime prior to the 5 years if you chose and women start normal ovulation again after the first month. I think it is a great alternative to a permanent procedure as you really can get it and forget it! Plus if you ever change your mind for any reason your now stuck with the permenent method. Happy to answer any other questions if you have them! Good luck!

Hi M., I have had the Merina (sp?) IUD for 4 years now and love it. I get a little breakthrough bleeding a couple of times a year but no period. Some people have bleeding and cramping the 1st 6 months, I did not but that is the only problem from what I have heard. I love it, have recommended it to friends who now love it as well.

M.,
I have to apologize...I was at my doctors office and I realized that the procedure I was speaking of is called "Novasure", not Essure. Sorry! Essure looks like it is much less invasive than the other. Good Luck!
-A.

Have you actually seen what they do for the essure procedure? They are basically cauterizing (burning) the inside of your uterus w/ a electrified mesh device. I would suggest getting information from your doctor before going through w/ anything. Just because they give a procedure some fancy copyrighted name doesn't really give you all the information...I personally wouldn't do that to my body.
How about your hubby steps up and takes some of the responsibility? Vasectomies are quick and easy procedures, and much less invasive than all of the things they can do womens bodies.
Good Luck! :)

Hi M.,

I had the Paragard IUD put in after my daughter was born and I don't really have a lot of complaints except that I have heavier periods. It didn't really hurt when they put it in, kinda reminded me of a pap smear. We had one issue the first month it was in and that was my husband could feel the "string" but I was able to adjust it myself and ever since we have been fine.

Congratulations on your new baby!! Until you are 100% sure that you are done, I would go with a IUD. I had a tubaligation right after my youngest daughter and now (4 years later) I regret that decision big time. In some research I have discovered that a tubaligation is reversable, Essure is not as easily undone and with a smaller success rate than the tubal. Making a decision during a pregnancy, or right after one, is not something that I would recommend. Good luck!!!
