I have an 8 week old baby and I am strictly breastfeeding. My question is my doctor put me on a low dose birthcontrol pill knowing I am breastfeeding, is it safe? Of course the info that came with the pill says not to and to consult your doctor. I don't think it would have been prescribed right?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the advice but I did decide to stop taking the pill. I mainly stopped because I noticed a decrease in milk supply.

My understanding is the low dose (POPs) pill is the safe pill to use while breastfeeding. I used it after the birth (and while breastfeeding) my 2 youngest kids. (Didn't know it existed for the older one)

I took low dose birthcontrol (prescribed by my midwife) after each of my 3 kids while breastfeeding. She assured me it was safe.

I took progesterone only BC pills with my son. I exclusively BF him for 12 months and went on to BF him for 2 years all while being on this pill. I didn't notice anything or have any problems. Good luck and congrats!

i got the mirena, and it has seemed to work well for me. it didnt seem to affect my milk at all.
i was hesitant about the pill because it does still go through your whole body. however, the mirena only delivers the hormone to the uterus. so talk to your doctor about that route if you were interested. or ask me. ;)

No it is not safe. There is a huge link between breast cancer and birthcontrol in adults. I can't imagine what havoc it would have a newly developed system.
I have no idea why your doctor would prescribe that. I prefer to believe that he quite simply doesn't understand or is not aware of the what may happen to an infant.

yeah it's fine. The other name for it is the mini pill. It's great cause it doesn't mess with your milk supply, is safe for baby and it's gives you piece of mind that you won't get pregnant again until you are ready. I took it with my first daughter until I was ready for #2. Never had any problems and no complaints :)

Current research indicates it is safe. Of course, medical research changes all the time and we never know 100%, but, from what we do know, it's safe. I didn't take it after my DD1 was born. (I didn't know it existed.) We relied on another, very effective, BC method and 13 mos after DD1 was born, DD2 was born. I took the minipill after the births of my next 3 kids (while breastfeeding.)

Why don't you call your doc's office and ask? I'm sure the doc or his/her nurse would be happy to answer your question and put any fears to rest.

I've used it after both of my kids were born and they never had a drop of formula. My doctor knew this and decided this was a good option (since I didn't want to leave it to chance or use another method I was unfamiliar with). If you're worried, however, it doesn't hurt to call your doctor.

I think you need to really explore....why does it say not to use it if breastfeeding? I am a doctor and it might seem safe, but you are putting hormones into your body and they will get in the breastmilk. Short term you may not notice any side effects, but are there long term effects. There is a reason the drug companies put those warnings there.
Second, if you are strictly breastfeeding, I would wait until your period comes back and then look at your options. I breastfed my three kids, no birth control and my periods didn't come back until at least a year or more. There are other ways to protect yourself such as condoms, and you won't have to wonder what is happening to your baby.
Just one persons opinion.

Yes, it is safe to take that one particularly pill when breastfeeding. it is the ONLY birth control pill that is safe.

It is extremely important that you take it at exactly the same time every day. I know that with all bc pills, they say that, but with the mini pill, it REALLY matters. Taking it at different times each day makes it considerably less effective and highly increases your chances of getting pregnant.

If a doctor prescibed it, it should be safe. But, doctors can make mistakes. Ask your pharmacist (they catch an amazing number of errors!) or check again with your doctor. I have taken the "mini pill" both times I have nursed and it is safe.

I wouldn't take hormonal birth control when I was breastfeeding, but that's just me. I know lots of women do, but I'm not comfortable with the influx of extra hormones in my bloodstream. My mom is an RN and just told me that's she's seen several studies recently that are looking at whether there is a link between residual hormonal birth control in the mother and autism. I don't mean to scare you, but it made me pause when she told me. My husband and I use condoms (no spermicide) when I'm breastfeeding and they work great.
