I have high blood pressure and in the process of looking into getting back on birth control after being off of it for 12yrs. My OBGYN told me my only option is the IUD due to my blood pressure.
Is this really my only choice? Anyone else have high blood pressure and on regular birth control? If so, what are you using?
Condoms are used obviously yet I have issues when I use those with my partner (bladder infections, yeast infections).
IUD is not your only option. You can use a diaphram also. But if you have high blood pressure it is a risk to your health to use the Pill. The Pill can raise blood pressure on it's own.
The other option is to do what you need to do to lower your blood pressure.
I have been on the pill (seasonale) and have high blood pressure. I've done this for years. But my blood pressure is controlled with medication also. My doctor did tell me that over the next couple of years I needed to decide what to do and see about getting off the pill due to my age.
You have other options if your BP is too high for the pill: depo provera shot, nexplanon (implant in arm), or IUD. All are nice because you don't have to remember to take a pill daily. A main side effect with them is that your period can become irregular or even nonexistent (which some women like).
My doctor had me on birth control pills after the IUD's did not work for me. But then told me that I should stop taking them due to high blood pressure. Some of the lower dose hormone pills may be an option. But why take the chance? Tracking your cycle works well if you have a regular cycle that is. Also have you tried the polyurethane condoms?
