Hi all,

I'm nearing my 35th birthday (scary!) and my OB has mentioned that at my next appointment I'll need to start thinking about what I want to do for birth control since YAZ isn't a good choice anymore. I have no idea what women do for birth control after 35, what are my options???

Thanks!

What can I do next?

my choice was tubal ligation. so far, so good. i am going on my 2nd year and have had no problems. in the beginning my periods would get a little heavy, but that has subsided.
a few of my other friends have the IUD or just the birth control pill. they have been lucky so far too.

Do you have al the kids you want? Get your tubes tied - or your husband's tubes snipped. Freedom! I had my tubes tied when my 2nd child was born via emergency c-section. I knew we weren't planning on any more and if he wasn't a c-section then my DH was going for a vasectomy. Wonderful to not have that concern anymore.

Eh--you don't have to stop the pill at "exactly" 35 I don't think. If you're "done" having kids, I'd vote for the vasectomy. Less invasive than having your tubes tied and pretty darn effective.

Are there no more kids in your future? If not, have your husband get a vasectomy. It's a simple, outpatient procedure usually done in the doctor's office, and in my opinion, the least the husband can do since we women carry the babies for 9 months and then deliver them! :) Then you are hormone free from no more birth control, and I can tell you from experience, it's a wonderful way to be! Good luck!

Quit smoking so you can stay on the pill. I am 41 and am still on the pill, I quit 5 years ago. I suppose you could look in to the depo shot. I was on that for 4 years and had side effects so stopped it. My husband flat out refuses to get a vasectomy and I don't want to get my tubes tied. You could also research implants or an IUD. Anything with hormones won't work for a smoker because of the risk of blood clots so the pill and ring are out.

My husband will be getting a vasectomy as we are done too. Until then I am using Nuvaring and love it. (I am 40).

Are you married or in a long-term, committed relationship with your partner? Perhaps suggest vasectomy for him. In the long run, it is less expensive and more reliable.

Tubal ligations or vasectomy. Don't go on the pill...too many side effects after 35. If you plan to still have children then use condoms for now.
Good Luck!

As you get older your progesterone levels drop so chances of becoming pregnant are less and less. If you are married then I would suggest he do something, condoms would be a good choice and you could track your cycle and ovulation time and just be really carefull. I married my present husband at 38 we didn't use any birth control and here we are 18 years later no new additions LOL. All of them have synthetic hormones in them which they know can cause blood clots, weight gain etc. Good Luck

Hi H.!

Try the hormone free IUD that lasts for 10 years. You will experience heavy bleeding the first month or so, with some cramping, but it soon fades and your menst. cycle will return to normal.

I got an IUD after my son was born. Have not looked back since.

TIP: For those hating the use of pads or tampons.. look for a product called "the keeper". (Link: http://www.thekeeper.com/) You get it in clear hypoallergenic plastic or beige I think the beige has latex and the clear one does not, for those allergic to latex. But it tells you what the product is made of. No more money wasted. No more having to go anywhere near your uterus unless absolutely necessary.. LOL! I hope I made some of your lives a bit easier by sharing... Good luck!
