Birth Control Question - Salt Lake City,UT

We have been trying to conceive for 9 months now with no luck. :( I am due in a few days for my period, so fingers crossed that this is our month!! But here's my question: if I'm NOT pregnant, we have decided to stop trying for about 6 months. It's a painful decision that I really hate, but we think it's best. Getting pregnant in the next 6 months would be really rough on our family as we will be graduating, moving out of state, and finding/starting a brand new career. We already have 2 kids, and I'd rather wait until we are settled into our "new life" to have another baby. Anyway, so my question is about birth control....if I'm not pregnant, what do you recommend I use for birth control? I've always used IUDs, but that obviously isn't a good option for such a short amount of time. We've tried condoms a few times in the past, but we both hated them.... What other methods are there that easy to get on and off of? Thanks!! And hopefully we'll get a positive test in a few days that this will be pointless....!!! I've learned not to hold my breath though, so I'm preparing myself to go back on some form of BC.

What can I do next?

I would just use a spermacide suppository or foam. Not 100% but probably good enough. You can find them with the condems.

I think that you should just keep using the condoms.

I wish you the best.

As L. as your cycles are regular and you are ovulating, I would recommend using condoms or abstinence the 4 days before ovulating and the 2 days after.

If your cycles are irregular, you could benefit from getting on the pill for a couple months because it would help to regulate things for you.

for such a short amount of time i would put up with the condoms. buy several small boxes of a variety of brands and styles to find the best option for the two of you. also try different brands of lubricants. they can improve the experience a lot. good luck with all your coming changes!

If you didn't want to have to use condoms the whole time, you could do the pill for three or four months and then just use condoms until you want to conceive. Do not use the shot--even though it's supposed to last three months it takes much longer to regulate your cycle once you are off of it (talking from experience.)

You could try any BC pill....YAZ is agreat one for so many reasons.
I would talk to your OB/GYN and see what they say!
Good luck...
Don't forget all things happen for a reason, there is a reason you haven't concieved yet...you may not know why...but we rarely know the reason behind things until later.
Good luck, and God bless!

I would suggest a diaphragm OR something like the sponge. I have also seen spermacide gels, capsules, and films in the drug store but I know they aren't quite as effective as a condom even when used correctly. I have been using a diaphragm for over two years now and it has worked out great with nursing my youngest and waiting for the right time to try for #3.

Well for something short term like that there is the good old fashion pill. I used it for a long time (i'm pregnant now so obviously not on anything) But the pill is easy to get off and on. You can start it after your next period and whenever you are done just stop taking it. Some people have side effects like with anything but for me I never did. No weight gain or mood swings etc. Plus it makes your periods supper light and so predictable and that is really nice.

I would recommend a diaphragm. Really pretty simple to use. If you also learn how to follow your cycle and know when you are ovulating, then you would only have to use the diaphragm when you know you are fertile. I highly recommend the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility. Great information for preventing pregnancy as well as how to get pregnant!

BC pills or the nuvaring. When I wanted to get pregnant I was on BC pills for 14 years. I went off it, used condoms for a month to flush my system and got pregnant the following month.

Sounds like a diaphram is the best choice given your plans. And they're not the pain and bother lots of people claim. I used one for years because I hated the side effects of the pill. If you don't want to mess with your hormones and you don't like condoms, this is the way to go.

Don't use anything hormonal, as it can take quite some time to leave your system. Most drs will tell you 3-6 months to get it all out, but often women will find that it takes much longer, commonly up to a year.

Read the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility. You may find it helpful not only on the side of not getting pregnant for now, but for achieving pregnancy once that time rolls around! Then use some simple barrier method for prevention until your time rolls around.
