I really loved having a doula and so did my husband. She came to our house as soon as my labor started and waited with us until it was time to go to the birth center. When my husband needed to go to the bathroom or take a break she was there. She rubbed my back and knew all kinds of pressure points to help relieve pain. She had FAR more experience with childbirth than either I or my husband and was able to reassure us that everything was progressing normally, this made it easier for the midwife to do her job as well since she was able to concentrate more on the medical aspect of the birth than on providing emotional support, not that she wasn't supportive as well. She also provided support during my pregnancy and was available to answer questions that I had about pregnancy, labor and delivery and babies. Also had I needed emergency medical assistance we had discussed with her that were our son and I to be separated she would remain with me while my husband went with our son. It made me, and my husband, feel much better knowing that he would be able to go with our son and not worry (as much) about me. Really, I could go on and on.

YESSS!!! My first birth was without, my husband was fantastic, but he needed support, too. My second would have certainly been a c-section w/o a doula. And as for PPDs, why not have all the help you can get!

These are women who believe in you, know what's up and are passionate about babies and motherhood, they are your BEST ally in the birth experience.

I can't believe that doula's aren't standard in all births.

Congrats and best of luck!

I used a doula for both births and really recommend it highly. I especially think it is helpful if you plan on doing anything natural or intend on walking around while at the hospital. The doula was able to help us navigate hospital policy when I clearly couldn't and asked the right questions of the staff when we needed more information to to make decisions but didn;t know what we needed to know. I also agree that just having someone with me so my husband could take a break or get something to eat was fabulous.

Had an excellent experience with a doula from Farmington Hills who is also a massage therapist. Her name is Exie Buehler and her website is www.tranquiltouchforwomen.com She has many testimonials on her site. She is very attentive throughout your pregnancy and labor/delivery.
