Birth Present for Baby

When my first son was born last year, I got him a 2009 Canadian mint gift set (a penny, nickel, dime, etc from 2009, plus a special color "baby coin"). His dad and I are canadian, and the baby was born in canada.
Now my second baby, due at the end of december, Im not sure what to do. He will be born in the US, but we are all moving back home to canada a few months after his birth. I've looked at US mint sets, and couldn't find anything really equivalent to what I got DS#1. I saw a set of 6 quarters from different states, but for some reason it doesnt really appeal to me. I think one of the issue is that we really don't identify with this country (nothing wrong with it, it's just not "home" for us, and we've also only been here for a short time). It feels funny to get him a canadian kit, as he won't be born in canada (no real reason for that, it's just the way i feel about it)
So, all this to say... Does anybody have any suggestion on what to get the new baby? Something to celebrate his birth year? A little momento to keep for a long time? I would like to avoid things he would outgrow, like a toy or a book...

What can I do next?

Won't he be a canadian citizen born abroad so to say? I would get him the Canadan set and perhaps an USA set to go with it.

You should see if you can find the same coins you got for baby number one.........I did a search on google and found this.....it's a start, but if you put in 2010 American Coin sets, this should help. . https://www.littletoncoin.com/
Amazon had some coins, but I think they were the quarters.

If not, maybe find some sort of flag plaque or something like that...try the Bradbury Collection.....there are others as well......or try Google - American History........

I'm sure you will come up with something nice..........and it's a great idea too.....

Take care and I'm sorry you are leaving us, but I understand. Enjoy being home again.

I'd get him the Canadian set. It doesn't sound like you're going to be staying in the states very long and he'll be a Canadian citizen. If he's going to grow up in Canada, that will be the country he identifies with. I think the Canadian coin set will mean more to him than the US one would.
If you don't want to do that, you can get some newspapers from the day of his birth and find a way to display the front pages. Maybe in a scrap book or even a plain photo album if you're like me and cant' scrapbook.

How about an american flag blanket and have his name embroidered on it with the year also.

You can have an American flag flown at the capitol on the day your son is born for a price. Then save the flag for him.

I too am preganant and am thinking of buying a bottle of this years wine (maybe even bottled the day he is born) and saving it for him for his 18th birthday. Or whatever the legal drinking age in Canada is. I personally don't drink but thought it would be a nice keepsake. Maybe worth a lot of money by then

I'd stick with the coin set like you got for your first--either canadian or US. My son collects coins and I know that coin sets (quarter, dime, nickel, penny, etc) DO exist for each year. Not sure exactly what sites we have come across them, but they DO exist! Good luck & Congrats!

Maybe you could get a onesie with an American flag and year stiched on it and have the new baby's birth picture taken in it. Then do a shadow box with the onesie, the photo, maybe some US currency and a small US flag to hang up in his/her room? Another thing you could do is something that revolves around the year (2010) rather than where he/she was born? A scrapbook of the front page of the newspapers from around the world dated the birth date? Finally, you could check out the Franklin Mint collections of coins and see if there is something more appealing to you.

Good luck!

i bought my kids the US mint set for their year of birth also. If you plan to raise your child in Cananda then I would get him the mint set from Canada. This way they both have the same set for their birth year. I think the consistency is good and they won't question why you did one for one and not for the other. Since your second child will be born in the states you could get him an uncirculated state quarter for the state he is born in to honor that part of it.

I'm Canadian and my husband is American. Our son was born in the US. He was born at the beginning of January and my husband gave me a coin/ornament with a picture on the front and our son's name, time of birth, date of birth, and place of birth on the back. the front says "season's greetings" and the back says "happy holidays." I think he got it through the US mint but I'm not really sure. The coin is larger than a twoonie. The picture on the front is representative of the state he was born in. You could check with the US mint to see if these types of coins are still available.
