I don't know if a Wii is an option but it seems to be the hot thing right now. If you get one of the others, chances are he will ask for a Wii down the road because that's what his friends have. I agree that xbox 360 seems to be for an older kid or adult. I'm no expert though.

Hi M., I don't know anything about either of the two game systems you mentioned, but I wondered if you had considered the games offered by companies like Leap Frog? They have many that are suitable for 6 year olds. There are no violent games to worry about and while the kids can get games filled with their favorite characters - they are all educational! Can't beat that... :)

Definitely not the x-box, many of the games are for much older kids. My suggestion would be the Wii. The nice thing about the Wii, it has many games for kids but also many games/activities for grown ups too. It is a great system for everyone in the house!

A wii, by far, it has more kids games, it actually encourages more physical movement and the games are geared more towards children, xbox 360 is more for adults. ps2 wouldnt be bad, but the technology is getting kinda old and besides the wii, has really came down in price. We have PS2, Gameboys, Wii's game cubes, Nintendo, super nintendo and nintendo 54, the wii is my kids hands down favorite to date.

They love the physical interaction and when paired with the wii fit, its a nice program for the whole family. btw the Wii has just dropped their price down by $50 and you will probably see some great bundles on black friday.

Search on E-Bay or Criagslist. These games are expensive and go out of style quicker than shoes. The games also can occupy a child for hours, so please make a schedule of play time, perhaps before dinner and definitely after homework is done, and also AFTER he plays outside for a while. You'll know what I mean once the game is in your house...

I vote for playstation 2. Lots more variety.

i think they both have pretty much the same games. i know that the ps2 has a good assortment of kids games, learning games, etc. we have one. my 3yo and 5yo can play the lego star wars, cabellos hunt and star wars battlefront. they also have diego, dora, princess, batman lego, indiana jones lego 1 & 2. they also have the handhelds, nintendo ds and also the psp. that's also somehting to think about. they aren't as expensive sometimes. on the ps2 you can also play the older version games ps1 on it.

Great question. I have 2 answers for you...
1. A six year old doesn't need a video gaming system. It is a huge financial investment and a 6 year old should only have a max of 2 hours a day of screen time ie. computer, tv and video games.
2. If purchasing a system for a 6yr old you want one with easy to use controls and the most rated E games so that would be a Wii.

Personally, A 6yr old would do better with a Nintendo DS and only allow play as a reward for getting homework/chores done etc.

Hello there, I dont think the X Box 360 is appropiate for younger childern as most of the games are Rated M or T, we have all the systems and I also have a 9 year old.I think the ps2 is a good choice , but dont think they make or sell as many games nows since the PS3 has come out,but you may want to check on that to make sure, I know the local gamestop has a bunch of games for ps2 for really cheap,and alot of there rating are E for everyone.Good Luck !

I have three children ages 9, 7, and 3.
We have a playstation 2. The games for their ages are limited and it is hard to find GOOD ONES.

If I was you, I would go to Best Buy, Wal-Mart, Gamestop, and K-mart and so on. I would take a look at the games they offer for each type of system. If you do not agree to what they have on them then it is not a good time to buy anything right now. Don't forget to look on the back of the games and read it and look at all of the pictures real well.

I saw on the news this am that Walmart has XBO 360 for $199 & you get a $100 gift card for Walmart. So really it's only $100.

We have a Playstations 2 and have had it for years. It's basically a personal preference. Go on line and look at the different games offered for each system. Also, be sure to consider the prices. There are a lot of great deals on Ebay for Playstation 2 as a lot of people are switching to the Playstation 3 or Wii game system. Everyone is different. Every child is different. It's just a matter of personal tases.

Several years ago, I asked around (I asked parents AND kids!!) which system to get and I was repeatedly told that Xbox is more for older people -- which was based on the games they had as well as the size of the controller being for bigger hands. We ended up getting a Game Cube at the time because there are sooooooooo many of the different types of Mario games that were so great for him and for the whole family to play together. We eventually traded up to a Wii and the Game Cube games can be played with it, plus there are Mario type games for Wii (Mario Party, Mario Kart, Mario Golf, etc). The Mario games tend to be non-violent (except for things like throwing turtle shells at cars!)I'm not sure what your budget is like, but the games are all so expensive so it's great that we can sometimes still find a good used Game Cube game for it, plus there really are a lot of great Wii games. I don't know anything about Playstation but it seems to me that they keep updating the system and I don't know if you can play the older games in the newer system so I don't know if you can get a variety of used games for it.

I don't have an answer to your question, just a suggestion.
There are several chains of video game "recycling" stores - like Gamestop - that sell used systems and games. This is a more financially friendly option than retail stores, and they usually have some sort of warranty or guarantee that the products work (which you aren't going to get from a stall in a flea market). We have both the playstation 2 and Wii and my son who is 8 plays both. The Wii we can play as a family the playstation he mainly plays himself - he has had the playstation for two years. The only down side of the playstation 2 is that because it is an older model the newer games are limited (though there are alot of old games). If you are looking for one with all the new titles - than PS2 is not your option - I would suggest the Playstation 3. And I agree - check out Gamestop before you buy new - especially the games. And the holidays has great "bundles" with consoles and games together. Good Luck:)

My vote is NO on the XBox!! The majority of games made for this system are for much older kids and adults - they are too violent. Your son would be much happier with a Wii or the Playstation. My 18 yr old doesn't play his playstation much anymore but the whole family, including my 6 yr old girl loves the Wii. That way, you can play with him and he's not playing by himself.

Have you considered geting a Wii? We have had a PS2 for a long time, my boys like playing it however, we bought a Wii last christmas and everyone likes to play the Wii, I bought the Wii fit and I have a blast on it. However for the more mature games, racing, combat, etc (my boys are 13 and 10) they prefer the PS2 but they want a Xbox360. Sorry I am not much help.

I have the 360 so I can tell you that we like it. Besides having lots of kid friendly games, you can also use netflix on it and watch whatever you want whenever you want. We don't even have cable, so my kids watch cartoons and shows on there. Of course, it also plays dvds. I noticed a lot of people on here said they couldn't find many kid friendly games, but we have alot of them, so maybe it depends on the store. And you can buy games directly on the xbox that are okay for them to play. We also have a Wii, and it is fun for what you can do on it, but it's only for games and nothing else. There are a lot of "family games" on it though, that require you to play on teams.
