Birthday Present Ideas for Son's 16 Yr Old Girlfriend

My son will be attending his "girlfriend's" Sweet 16 birthday party and asked what he should get her. They've only been "going together" for a couple of months, which means a lot of texting and only one date with friends. A bracelet or necklace seems too personal and a gift card too impersonal. Any ideas and suggestions?

So What Happened?

Thank you for all the great ideas. After much thought, we finally bought her a nice photo album and included a few pictures I had taken of them from the dance they attended and some miscellaneous shots. She can add future pictures of them together from the party. Then he picked out a cute teddy bear to hold it. He said she liked it and even got a hug from her! :)

You are right a neckless and stuff like that is too soon. maybe he can take her out to the movies and a dinner but being 15 hard to do unless some one drives. a gift card might be impersonal but she might like one to her favorite store that at the mall or to the movies.

I have a 17 year old son. I would suggest nothing too serious or personal so as not to convey the wrong message.
If there is something she likes, like a favorite candy or she has a favorite sport or hobby something related to that such as maybe a stuffed small animal or bear.

Hi J.,

If his girlfriend wears makeup, potentially having someone do a makeover would be fun for her. That way she would feel confident in the way she wears it. I have an Arbonne business and do makeovers if that is what you want.

Best Regards,
G.

I actually don't see anything wrong with a bracelet or necklace. When I read the question, before I even got to your thoughts on those items, a bracelet was my first thought. That's not too personal of an item. A nice charm bracelet with items she likes on it would be great. It'd show that he knows what she likes and cares about her. Or he could go the route of a new CD out that she would like. Or maybe a novel or some sort of book that she would be interested in. I even just asked my husband what he would get, without giving any of my thoughts, and first thing he said was a charm bracelet, lol. So maybe that'd be a good route to go.

You're right. At 16, jewelry is too personal and gift cards just don't cut it.

I recommend giving a gift that is also an "experience." Build-a-Bear Workshops are very popular for all ages. If he's really smitten with this girl, he could suggest an afternoon where he would take her to the Workshop, help her build a bear (or some other animal), pay for it, and then take her to the food court for an ice cream.

He might also suggest one of those places where they can paint/glaze pottery together or he could contact Bonita Bead Boutique in Maumee ###-###-####) and take her to one of their jewelry-making classes.

There are many other ideas like these... my point is that he offer to do it WITH her. He may not find the outing very appealing, but it will score BIG brownie points with the girlfriend!

Good luck!

Dear J.,
I think a good present for any teen is money. Given in a creative way. You could get 4 or 5 helium ballons ( our local dollar store has them) roll 16 one dollar bills up and tie them to the streamers on the ballons. Them put the money ends of the ballons in a gift bag and tape shut. When the bag is open the money suprise comes out ! Girls love it!!

Maybe even some flowers or a balloon sent to school. The attention could be nice.

Concert Tickets are #1 but are often expensive, girls love it when a guy makes them a Build-a-Bear (perhaps one to represent him like if he plays baseball get the bear dressed in baseball clothes), flowers with a CD he personally burnt for her or a funny key chain, a designer (i.e. Coach) wallet or wristlet...or since it's the 16th something cute for her car. :-)

He should take her to the mall to Build A Bear and let her pick out a bear to make. They can both kiss the heart for good luck and they should have a really good time. My husband did that for me on our 2 month anniversary of dating (also my 20th birthday) and I thought it was really sweet. If he's embarrased they could do during the day when it's not very busy. It seems corny but I bet she would love it and they could have a good time.

If he doesn't like that idea he could always make her favorite cookie or something. It doesn't have to be store bought, anything that shows he cared enough to think about it will make her happy.

Teenage girls are all about the romance and public displays of affection. He could bring her flowers to school (always did love that one personally), he could buy the corsage to wear at her party. He could look up interesing facts about the day she was born (number one song, local news, national news, box office smash etc) and make her a power point presentation on the computer of all those facts.

For Christmas I bought my son's girlfriends products from Bath & Body works & they loved them! My son (15) took a cue from that & bought the next girl he dated products from there for her birthday and she was thrilled! Also, Vera Bradley bags and accessories are huge with teenage girls, depending on what you are willing to spend, he could get her a VB item. They have a wide range of price points for different things from wallets, purses to umbrellas. I have given the boys girlfriends the small zip wallets ($10) for birthdays and they are a huge hit!

I also agree jewelry is a bit too much. I would go with a bouquet of roses along with something from Bath and Body or even a gift card. The roses make it very personal and the lotion not so much. They are ONLY 16. I don't think he need to go too crazy

If your son knows what she likes than you could even go with some lotion & spray from Bath & Body Works...must girls love that stuff. Hope this helps some.

Hi, I have a 15 yr. old son. He bought his girlfriend a movie DVD. It was one she said she really liked. Or it could be a concert DVD of a band she really likes. Also scrapbooking supplies so she can preserve memories--even a personalized photo album! A gift card for a manicure and pedicure. Best of luck.
